KEEP KIDS LEARNING

Summer is here! While we love to think of summer as a time of fun and play, for many kids, it also means falling behind in reading and math, a phenomenon known as the Summer Slide. We know that with busy schedules and no school, it can be difficult to keep kids learning and engaged over the summer, and those weeks can add up over the course of a child’s education. So, Umpqua is continuing to take an active role in helping kids and families stop the slide! We’ve created this activity packet to help your kids have some fun – and keep learning – this summer and beyond. You can find more materials and activities online by visiting www.umpquabank.com/learntoearn, or any of the resources listed in the back of the packet. And you can help us stop the slide by sharing your stories, tips and photos on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Be sure to tag us @UmpquaBank and use the hashtag #StopTheSlide to join the conversation. Have fun, and learn lots!

YOUR TRIP ADDS UP Car trips, even if it’s just to the grocery store, can be fun. Make the trip fly by with this quick game. INSTRUCTIONS: Find a license plate and have fun with the numbers! Try to find license plates from different states for some variety.

BONUS: Can you take the letters in your license plate and make a fun sentence? Can you make it relevant to your trip today? For instance… our 123ABC plate becomes “Awesome Brothers Carpool.”

MAP IT You know the ins and outs of your backyard. But have you ever created a map of it? Try it out! INSTRUCTIONS: Get out your colored pencils, and head out to your backyard. Follow these steps to make a map of your yard: 1. Walk each edge of your yard, counting your paces as you go. 2. Trace the outline in the grid below, marking one pace per square (if your yard is bigger, do 4 steps to a square). 3. Use symbols to mark different landmarks: If there’s a tree or a bush, draw a circle. If there’s a shed, outline it with a square. If there’s a patio, concrete driveway or walkway or other gravel, shade it in in gray. If you have a playset or swing, draw in a star. Color in your grass with green!

MANAGE YOUR MONEY Key Concepts

»» A Need is something that we must have in order to survive. Water, food, shelter and clothing are examples of needs.

»» A Want is something that we desire, but do not need in order to live. A new bicycle is an example of a want.

»» A Goal is something specific that you work towards.

For example, you might have a god to get A grades in all of your classes next year.

»» A Budget is a plan for your money.

»» Income is all of the money that you are given or earn. Gross Income is the amount of money your boss pays to you. Net Income is the amount of money that you receive after taxes have been taken.

»» Demand is how much of something people want.

»» Taxes are the money that people pay to the government for public services such as roads, schools, police and fire departments.

A Plan for Success: Create a Budget

1. There is nothing more important for money management than a budget. Have a parent or guardian help you create your own budget, in order to save for something you want.

2. Together, write down all the ways you receive money (income). 3. Then, write down all the things you typically buy (expenses).

4. Choose something that you want, but do not yet have enough money to buy.

5. Together work out a plan (budget) on how you will save for this item and when you will be able to buy it. 6. Use the questions and budget chart below. • What is the item you are saving for? • How much does the item cost?

• How much money do you earn each week?

• Are there additional ways you can earn more money to put towards your goal? • How much are you able to save for this item each week? Fill in the amounts and do the math below: Amount of the item

Amount you save per week

How many weeks until you reach your goal

____________ ÷ ______________ = ____________
