Camosun College is a comprehensive community college located on the traditional territories of the Coast and Strait Salish peoples serving the people of the Greater Victoria Region of British Columbia. The College has an operating budget of over $123 million. Across two campuses, Camosun offers more than 160 certificate, diploma, and bachelor’s degree programs in arts, sciences, business, health and human services, trades, technologies, sport education, Indigenous studies and adult upgrading. Camosun International is seeking to create a list of relief counsellors that are available to fill in for our full time international student counsellors during sick days, vacation and scheduled development days. This position has no specific set dates at present but selected relief counsellors will be called upon on an as needed basis and could be required on short notice.

This relief position will provide student counselling services through individual counselling appointments for registered international students, in addition to crisis intervention and management. Counsellors provide personal, educational, and career counselling covering a broad range of student issues and needs experienced by a culturally diverse student population. The International Counsellors work as members of a dynamic International Student Unit, reporting to the Associate Director of Camosun International.

Providing individual and small group counselling to international students on issues related to cultural adjustment and transition, health and wellness concerns, academic/career decision making, psychological issues, and critical issues such as grief and loss, or other crises that may occur at home; consulting with instructional faculty and service providers; liaising with community medical and psychiatric professionals and the legal system.

The successful candidate is expected to:       

Adhere to related policies, procedures and protocols Demonstrate excellence and respect in verbal and written communications Contribute to and cultivate collegial and collaborative work relationships Demonstrate strong organizational abilities Possess a strong interest in and demonstrated ability in ensuring student success in a highly collaborative environment Be computer literate with MS Office programs (Outlook, Word) Be familiar with and thrive in a BC post-secondary education setting

QUALIFICATIONS • A Master’s degree, preferably in Counselling Psychology, from an accredited postsecondary institution with course work encompassing the theory and practice components of the counselling profession. • Qualifications gained through related course work in cross-cultural counselling and professional counselling ethics. • Evidence of three years successful experience in providing cultural, career, academic, and personal counselling in a post-secondary setting, including direct experience working in a counseling role with an international student population. • Excellent ability to work cooperatively and productively within a team. Strong personal skills that include excellent communication, human relations, problem solving, and abiding by and modeling ethical and professional standards of behaviors. • Specialized knowledge and skills to utilize counselling styles that are congruent with the value systems of other cultures and knowledge of cultural belief systems in relation to mental health, wellness and safety; the ability to identify, understand and work with behaviors, verbal/nonverbal communication, values and beliefs across a range of cultures; and the ability to modify and adapt conventional approaches in counselling to accommodate cultural differences.

• Additional areas of specialized knowledge and skill could include, (but are not limited to): mental health intervention (strategies and resources), disordered eating, addictions, grief & loss; critical incidence debriefing, career assessment & development; teaching, group facilitation and presentations, training & supervision; conflict-resolution; student learning and success skills; specialized treatment approaches and resource knowledge.

Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
