Digitizing the Board of Directors workplace The challenge In 2014, Glarner Kantonalbank (GLKB) was nominated as "Switzerland’s digital bank" by the Fintech portal Finews. In 2015, Ralf Luchsinger, GLKB’s CIO was awarded "CIO of the Year". In 2016, when GLKB was planning for the digitization and secure communication of its Board of Directors workplaces, the successful strategy of "One Device, Anytime, Anywhere with Touch" had to be continued. Therefore, only products that could seamlessly integrate into the existing environment, were in scope as a solution for the Board’s secure exchange of information. Ideally, the platform should be operated in their own data center. In order to provide the members of the Board of Directors with timely strategic information and documents, the strengths of the document management platform Microsoft SharePoint was required for use. In parallel, the advantages of the new Microsoft Surface mobile devices running Windows 10, with its touch capabilities and single sign-on had to be integrated. The project team, led by the Board secretary, also wanted a simple and intuitive user interface that didn’t made it necessary for the user to attend trainings
The solution GLKB has designed and built its Enterprise environment with Microsoft technology. Microsoft SharePoint is generally used for collaboration purposes. Therefore, all required components for the operation of "twelve Directors Portal" were already in place, and the extensions of the solution could be implemented without additional efforts. The Board members were equipped
with company-owned Microsoft Surface devices. "twelve mobile for Windows" was installed on these tablets and the portal was configured for the individual users. The special feature was the use of the single sign-on capabilities of Windows 10: once logged on to the computer, the BoD member has immediate access to all information and documents of the past, current and future meetings. "twelve mobile for Windows" security features defend the confidentiality of the contained data, and yet a high degree of usability is offered. The BoD member can easily read the documents in full-frame and add comments. It was imperative to the project team that the graphical interface was optimized for using digital pens as well as for the use of fingers for all functions of the app. Within one working day, “twelve Directors Portal” was integrated and configured in GLKB.
Glarner Kantonalbank, founded in 1884 is strongly rooted in canton Glarus with 6 locations. As a universal bank, GLKB is focused on mortgages and savings business as well as on the asset management and investment business. Mid of 2016, Glarner Kantonalbank had total assets of around 5.0 billion Swiss francs. The GLKB strives intensively for the digitization of banking business.
The results Only hours after the operational handover of “twelve Directors Portal”, the first meetings were created and related documents were uploaded by the Board Secretariat. Managing the meetings and documents using the administrative interface of "twelve Directors Portal" was perceived as easy and self-explanatory by the Board Secretariat staff. After a short presentation of the new tool to the members of the Board of Directors, the managers deemed their new solution as very intuitive to use and time-saving. Each of the seven members of the Board of Directors of GLKB immediately started using "twelve Directors Portal" to keep up-to-date with the latest business data and waived the countless and unsafe emails of former times.
