WORCESTER ART MUSEUM

WAM + = ART STEAM Worcester Art Museum is putting ART back into the equation this summer! We are now offering new and innovative studio classes for youth and teens that integrate the visual arts with STEM — science, technology, engineering and math. This interdisciplinary approach engages young artists in a wholistic creative process, as they learn ways to investigate, create, problem-solve, collaborate and play. It promises to be a lively summer — from the geometry of mandalas and the kinetic energy of roller coasters to the engineering behind mammoth murals and Mac lab animations. For 129 years, WAM has worked to meet the changing needs of its creative community.

YOUTH CLASSES

Youth and Teen Levels Ages 3 – 5 Years with Adult These classes introduce young children to art materials and new experiences through studio activities, games and stories. Required parent/guardian participation reinforces communication skills and assists children in developing motor skills. Shared and individual activities help children gain self-confidence and learn to express themselves. These classes require one adult (guardian) per child enrolled.

What Makes our Program Unique?

Ages 5 – 7 Years Students are exposed to a broad range of ideas and art forms through medium-specific classes, such as sculpture and painting, as well as through theme-based classes. Emphasis is on self-expression and experimentation.

WAM has a long history of introducing children of all ages to the world of art. Our students explore the Museum, try new materials, and benefit from working with professional artists and educators. As they build on their skills, they gain a sense of confidence and a deeper appreciation for art. All youth, not just those with perceived talent, benefit from our Program. Our instructors consider each child’s unique capabilities and give individualized attention during lessons. All materials are provided for youth classes.

Ages 5+ Years with Adult Students of varying ages and a parent/guardian learn together about art through gallery visits and studio activities. Required parent/guardian participation reinforces creative thinking, design, implementation and assists younger students in developing these skills. This class allows up to two children per one adult (guardian) enrolled.

Tips to get started

Ages 8 – 10 & 11 – 13 Years Students strengthen creative confidence and technical abilities through medium-specific courses. Projects focus on developing observational and technical skills as well as furthering the student’s ability to think independently.

Art Together: Draw It, Build It, Shape It 3-5 Years w/Adult Ryan Jarvis *Nonmember $175 / Member $157.50 Develop your preschooler’s skills and confidence working in several materials, all inspired by art and stories about the ocean and its creatures. Draw, paint and sculpt treasure boxes, boats, fish and much more. This class requires one adult per child enrolled, please no additional siblings or infants.

2D and 3D Explorations 5-7 Years TBD Enjoy hearing stories from around the world inspired by the Museum’s collection. In the studio, create works that tell stories of your own. You will explore paint, fibers, recycled materials and more in this fun filled and nurturing environment.

Art Together: World of Night 3-5 Years w/ Adult Jen Swan *Nonmember $175 / Member $157.50 Explore the beauty and mystery of the nighttime world. Through drawing, painting and sculpture, each class will challenge your imagination and encourage you to experiment with new techniques and materials. Projects will include nocturnal animal masks, constellation maps and lunar landscapes. This class requires one adult per child enrolled, please no additional siblings or infants.

Dragons 101 5-7 Years Jessica Harris Journey through our medieval galleries while learning about the myths and legends of dragons from around the world. Then create your own dragon-inspired picture: a fantastic creature, a battle, or a castle!

Super Science Art Activities 5-7 Years Priscilla Harvey Have fun in this summer class as you create cosmic sun catchers, make rainbow wizard’s brew and explore the method of wax resist as you talk about science. Come make these and more with exciting science and art connections. Under the Sea 5-7 Years Jessica Harris Be inspired by the fish fountain and the seascapes in the Museum. In the studio, create your own magical underwater world using a variety of mixed media! A Handmade Toy, Puzzle, and Maze 8-10 Years Haruo Shiga Become an inventor and create your own toys. Explore the world of design and think about art in a whole new way. Tour the galleries to gather inspiration for your hand-crafted project in the studio. Expand your artistic knowledge and experiment with a variety of materials. Create a Comic 8-10 Years Scott Nelson Learn how to plot, script, pencil and ink your own 6 - 8 page comic book tale. Use the Museum as inspiration for your comics, weaving artworks and exhibitions into your plot. Nature’s Tessellations 11-13 Years Jen Swan Use forms and designs found in nature to create a series of tessellating drawings, paintings and sculptures. Find unique and mathematical patterns in shell spirals, honeycombs, and other expressions of natural design to inspire your art.

Musical Mandalas 5-7 Years Jen Swan Use geometry, patterns and dramatic colors to bring harmony and balance to mandalas, unique instruments, and abstract paintings done to music. Learn how color and sound relate to emotion and creativity and find inspiration from WAM’s ancient and contemporary galleries. Drawing and Painting: Mythological Creatures 8-10 Years Jessica Harris In the galleries, explore, view, and discuss the art of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Rome, and more. Learn about mythological heroes and creation stories depicted in art. In the studio, use these rich stories as inspiration for your own work. Inspired Sculpture 8-10 Years Haruo Shiga Learn about the medieval times by exploring the Museum’s new installation of arms and armor. You will be inspired to create your own style of armor, helmets and wild fantasy creatures. Art Studio 11-13 Years TBD This multi-media class will provide an overview of the different materials, styles, and subjects available to a budding artist. Painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking will be covered while working on a variety of projects - this class is a perfect way to start your own artistic journey.

Prints and Paws 5-7 Years Julie Ugalde Explore what your own finger, hand- and footprint can create! You will investigate the paw prints of animals familiar to you such as a cats and dogs, then look at other prints in the environment while making colorful art in the studio. Art Studio 8-10 Years TBD This multi-media class will provide an overview of the different materials, styles, and subjects available to a budding artist. Painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking will be covered while working on a variety of projects - this class is a perfect way to start your own artistic journey. Discover Japan 8-10 Years Haruo Shiga Travel through time learning about the ancient and contemporary art, culture and language of Japan. Create your own 2D and 3D works of art in the studio using a variety of materials. Black and White Illustration 11-13 Years Scott Nelson Develop a strong sense of design, form and contrast using just two elements -- light and shadow. Learn basic line drawing and explore the uses of line and wash while working from the Museum’s collection for inspiration. Medieval Arts 11-13 Years Jessica Harris Come and discover the Museum’s medieval galleries for clues to how people lived in the Middles Ages. Then, in the studio, explore paper, paint and clay to create books, paintings, and sculptures.

Science Sensations with Nature 8-10 Years Julie Ugalde Have fun and combine scientific concepts such as observation and documentation with art. Develop a “hypothesis” as you discover how weather affects lives and objects in nature through collage and mobiles. The Art of Motion 8-10 Years Jen Swan In this S.T.E.A.M. inspired class, you will design and construct your own working roller coaster. Using creative vision and engineering skills, transform the twists and turns of your drawings into a three dimensional kinetic and potential energy sculpture. Computer Animation 11-13 Years Jamie Buckmaster Watch your story come to life in our Mac lab. Learn the tricks of the trade to create storyboards and animated sequences on the computer. Combine traditional hand drawn animation with technology, while designing and illustrating your own story from panel to panel. Seeing in Sculpture 11-13 Years Haruo Shiga Explore the world of 3D design and think about art in a whole new way. Tour the galleries to gather inspiration for hands-on sculpting in the studio. Expand your artistic knowledge and experiment with installation, clay, fibers and recycled materials.

Week 3 July 24 to July 28 10am–12pm Art Together: I Can Read a Rainbow 3-5 Year w/ Adult Ryan Jarvis *Nonmember $175 / Member $157.50 Walk through the galleries and look at how artists use color to express their feelings. Listen to stories about colors and learn how to make some of the colors you see. Use these colors in your painting, collage and mixed-media activities. This class requires one adult per child enrolled, please no additional siblings or infants. Multicultural Masks 5-7 Years Jen Swan Design and create a series of masks using fun mixed media sculpture materials. Find inspiration from the many cultures found in the Museum’s galleries and the stories and myths that they share with us. Ping Pong Prints 5-7 Years Julie Ugalde Did you know that everyday objects can be a print? Everything has lines and shapes! Use recyclables such as ping pong balls for printing and stamping! Make your own stamp in this class from a variety of everyday materials.

12:30–2:30pm Engineering as Art 8-10 Years Priscilla Harvey Learn about foreground and background as they pertain to perspective in art. Study architecture as you tour the Museum and discover how artists such as Edgar Degas and Alexander Calder can be engineers. Who knew how much fun it can be when you experience being an art engineer!

Clay: Poke, Pinch, Pretend 5-7 Years Jessica Harris Come explore the many possibilities of clay sculpture! Discover how other materials can be added to make your sculpture even more playful. Travel through the Greek and Roman galleries for inspiration, then create artifacts of your own.

Mosaic and Collage 8-10 Years Ryan Jarvis Worcester Art Museum has been involved with excavating, collecting, and restoring mosaics for almost 90 years! After visiting the galleries, use a variety of materials to make your own mosaic art. Learn how to create larger images and how to achieve realistic shading and depth.

Creative Cartooning 11-13 Years Scott Nelson Learn how to draw faces that express emotion, write text to make your readers laugh, and draw convincing outlandish situations in this week-long class. Explore the basics of drawing, shading, writing and page layout.

Drawing and Painting 5-7 Years TBD Visit WAM’s galleries daily where you’ll hear stories and see works that span 5,000 years of art and culture. Back in the studio, learn about color, texture and line while you create your own drawings and paintings with tempera paints, cray-pas, and watercolors!

Paper Sculpture 11-13 Years Haruo Shiga This class is all about taking a 2-D piece of paper and making it into a 3D sculpture. Visit WAM’s exhibition Reusable Universes: Shih Chieh Huang to see how you can transform objects into sculptural forms.

3D Sculpture 8-10 Years Haruo Shiga Build your skills in basic sculpture techniques using WAM’s galleries for inspiration to explore the work of famous sculptors. In the studio, learn hand-crafting with clay and create works using paper, wire, cloth and more.

Sci-Fi Printmaking and Sculpture 11-13 Years Jen Swan Search for Gargoyles, Jade Dragons and other mythical creatures as we explore the worlds of fantasy and science fiction. How does science fiction fill our imagination with creative vision and influence inventions of the future? Create your own fantasy world in a series of illustrations, block prints and futuristic sculptures. Art + Math = Madness 11-13 Years Julie Ugalde Use the art elements to learn basic skills such as classification, multiplication and shape identification! Make your geoboards and tangrams during the week learning many new mathematical skills while exploring all the art elements!

Drawing and Painting 8-10 Years Jessica Harris Learn the basic techniques of using paints, pastels and pencils to illustrate what you see. Strengthen your observation skills while working directly from objects in the Museum. Emphasis will be placed on color mixing, mark making, balance, composition and shading.

Explore the Museum galleries looking for animals in art, and build skills and confidence in the studio together.

Animals in Art 5-7 Years Sally Lividini Come on an art safari and search the Museum for animals from around the world. In the studio, use watercolors, pastels, clay and more to create real and imaginary animals and habitats.

Art Together: Tropical Getaway 3-5 Years w/ Adult TBD *Nonmember $175 / Member $157.50 Tour the galleries for inspiration, then create your own tropical plants, fish and birds with drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpting materials. Lessons will help develop motor skills and encourage visual and verbal expression.

Science and Art 5-7 Years TBD In this S.T.E.A.M. inspired class have fun exploring both art and science! Learn about the beauty of the physical world all around you. Use all kinds of art materials to explore light, color, plants and animals. Sculpture FUNdamentals 5-7 Years Jessica Harris Explore the Museum’s galleries and hear stories about art and artist from near and far. Have fun creating 3D works of art out of clay, papiermâché and recycled materials as you construct animals, people, and objects. Cartoon Art 8-10 Years Scott Nelson Encourage a love of drawing, storytelling, and a sense of humor with this great class! Get inspired by your favorite comics and design your own character in a storyline. Drawing and Painting 11-13 Years TBD Draw objects from around the world in the Museum’s galleries then bring them to life with acrylics, temperas and watercolors in the studio. Explore the complete painting process, from the initial sketch to the finished product. Learn how to transfer sketches into paintings and how to work from drawing a grid on the picture. What ‘IS’ Contemporary Sculpture? 11-13 Years Haruo Shiga What isn’t?! This class begins with you designing and creating your own working mobile. Throughout the week, you will gather inspiration to build an installation that transforms into a site specific sculpture.

Making Faces 5+ Years w/ Adult Jim Welu *Nonmember $190 / Member $171 Designed for children 5-13 and parents or grandparents of all ages, this gallery-studio class focuses on the art of portraiture. Create portraits in a variety of media as you explore representations of people in the Museum. Learn basic drawing skills, experiment with tempera paint, and try your hand at sculpture, paper construction, and more. Clay, Clay, and More Clay 8-10 Years Haruo Shiga Come explore the many possibilities of clay. Discover how other materials can be added to make your sculpture even more playful. Travel through contemporary, Greek and Roman galleries, then create artifacts of your own. Mythology in Art 11-13 Years Jessica Harris While visiting the medieval and Asian galleries hear stories of mythical creatures. Throughout history, artists have been inspired by myths and legends and have given them visual form. Create artworks that bring these tales to life. Digital Comics: Animals and Creatures 11-13 Years Jamie Buckmaster Comic illustration is the basis for designing characters for comic books, children’s books, toy design, animation and video games. Use the computer to develop non-human characters, and learn to use traditional comic drawing techniques to illustrate animals and create unique creatures.

Flight of Fancy 5-7 Years Jen Swan Learn about the anatomy, migration routes and habitats of birds as you create a series of drawings, paintings, sculptures and find ornithology inspired art in the Museum’s collection. Art Studio 5-7 Years TBD This multi-media class will provide an overview of the different materials, styles, and subjects available to a budding artist. Painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking will be covered while working on a variety of projects - this class is a perfect way to start your own artistic journey. Math Smarts in Art 8-10 Years Priscilla Harvey Math has a natural connection to art in paintings, sculpture, mosaics and so much more. Each day you will visit a gallery and observe math concepts in art. Then return to the studio to continue making math connections through the enjoyment of working with mosaics, tangrams, maps and other math in art surprises. Math x Art = Summer Fun! Contemporary Studio 8-10 Years Ryan Jarvis Explore WAM’s gallery dedicated to art and sculpture from the 20th century. Have fun learning why artists make the choices they make and how they give their work meaning. In the studio use a variety of materials to model your own 2D and 3D works. Claymation 11-13 Years Jamie Buckmaster Claymation is the standard for model-based animation in the movies. Create and build characters and then photograph them frame-by-frame to create a modern masterpiece of 3-D animation.

Kids in Architecture 11-13 Years Elaine Smollin Bring your 3D dreams to life! Explore ancient architecture in the galleries then create and design in the studio. Learn how to use a variety of materials to hand build architecture. There is an emphasis on creativity and experimentation through projects and skill building.

12:30–2:30pm Meet the Artist 5-7 Years TBD Visit the galleries to see how artists like Monet and Magritte used materials in their art. Create your own art as you have fun learning the basics and expressing yourself in painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. Ancient and Prehistoric Art 5-7 Years TBD Pack your bags and take a trip back in time as you learn about some of the oldest treasures in the museum. Egyptian, Greek, Roman and the medieval galleries will be highlighted and student projects will focus on these cultures. The Art of Asia 8-10 Years Jessica Harris Visit the Museum’s galleries to learn myths and cultural traditions depicted through art. In the studio, experiment with brushwork techniques and work with a variety of materials to create works inspired by the art of Asia. Mural Design 8-10 Years Ryan Jarvis Worcester is a city filled with murals. Learn how artists work big, use different materials, and incorporate historical events into their narrative. This class will focus on different techniques of enlarging smaller works as well as working collaboratively on a mural together. The Art of Space 11-13 Years Jen Swan Create artwork from images of faraway galaxies and nebulas in this far out class. Learn techniques to portray distant stars, glowing orbs and spirals as you build skills in pastel drawing, painting and textile work. Manga 11-13 Years Jamie Buckmaster Create interesting and innovative illustrations while learning tricks and tips cartoonists use to tell stories through images. Create a mangastyle comic and use WAM’s Mac lab to translate your story into the next great graphic novel.

TEEN CLASSES What’s Available for Teens? WAM’s intensive classes for 14-17 year olds provide time to develop skills, create a portfolio-appropriate artwork, and share ideas with other like-minded students. Teen classes include group critiques, socializing, and break time. They are great for college-bound artists, students looking to build their portfolios, or teens who just want to have some creative fun. All class materials are provided, with the exception of digital cameras.

Photojournalism 14-17 Years Elaine Smollin Explore adventurous and subtle ways to capture the unique environments, patterns, people, and relationships that define your world while developing your photographic skills in composition, light, and meaning. Must provide own digital camera.

Drawing and Painting Intensive 14-17 Years Elaine Smollin Inspired by your surroundings, learn and enhance basic drawing and painting skills. Working on location in both the galleries and the parks surrounding WAM, you will create works on paper and canvas. Learn how to use paints, pastels and pencils to illustrate what you see. Then, experiment with color mixing, mark-making, composition and shading.

Fantasy Illustration 14-17 Years Jamie Buckmaster Study the works of master fantasy illustrators and learn some of the techniques they used to create incredible works of imaginative art. Practice techniques in pencil, ink, and paint as you develop your own creative style of imaginative illustration.

3D Design 14-17 Years Ryan Jarvis Explore contemporary strategies and ideas for creating 3D art using clay, wood, metal and a variety of other materials. Make sketches and experiment with tried and true techniques such as carving and mold-making as well as modern styles to create your own dynamic art. Complement your studio work with informal discussions and critiques, and visit the galleries for inspiration.

Week 3 July 24 to July 28 10am–2:30pm Artists’ Anatomy 14-17 Years Elaine Smollin *Nonmember $330 / Member $297 Enjoy discussion and orientation through conversation in the Museum’s galleries regarding use of human and animal figures. In the studio, we will draw with color to express line and form, shadow and light on partially clothed life models. Basic muscular and skeletal anatomy, and movement will be covered. Digital Arts 14-17 Years Jamie Buckmaster *Nonmember $330 / Member $297 This class focuses on designing digital games. Create interesting and unique backgrounds and characters. See examples from Gamemaker, Zbrush and Maya 3D. No previous programming knowledge required.

Week 5 August 7 to August 11 10am–2:30pm Drawing and Painting Portfolio Builder 14-17 Years TBD Whether you are getting ready for art school admissions or simply looking for an intensive summer class, this weeklong class will examine the fundamentals of 2D and 3D art, including line, form, space, balance and hue. Screen-printing Hacks 14-17 Years Ryan Jarvis *Nonmember $330 / Member $297 Learn the basics of the wonderful world of silk-screening while developing your inspiration from works in the Museum’s galleries. We will go over the basics of this printmaking technique that can be done on paper, fabric and a variety of other mediums. In this week-long class, you will also learn how to build and stretch your own screens.

REGISTRATION

Class Information Materials

All art materials are provided to youth and teen studio class programs, except when noted. Please see the full course description online for details. Spray paints, fixatives, and aerosols are prohibited in WAM’s studios. The Worcester Art Museum is not responsible for materials left on the premises.

Student Pickup and Drop-off

Students are not allowed to leave early from class without written parent release form filed with the Registration desk. Parents and guests pickup and drop-off students from the Lancaster Welcome Center, please note the Lancaster Street entrance is not accessible to wheeled devices. An accessible entrance is located on Tuckerman Street via the Stoddard Garden Court entrance. Designated spaces are available for visitors with disabilities and families with small children in two WAM parking lots - Salisbury Street and Tuckerman Street. Parents and guests must wait in the Lancaster Welcome Center or the Museum galleries during their child’s class, only registered students are allowed in the studios and galleries during class-related activities.

Lunch and Snacks

If you enroll a child in extended day and/or lunch, please note that the Worcester Art Museum requires that students provide their own, nut-free lunches, healthy snacks, and drink(s). Refrigeration is not available. Please make sure your child knows which food should be eaten at snack time and lunch time. Please alert WAM staff at the time of registration if your child has a serious allergy or other medical concern.

Refund Policy - Important!

A 90% refund is given upon withdrawal in writing 5 or more business days before first class meeting. Withdrawal must be in writing. Email withdrawal request to: [email protected]. No credits or refunds are given on withdrawals less than 5 business days before the first class meeting. When a class is canceled, students are issued a full refund. Supervised lunch and extended day fees are non-refundable. Make-up classes are not offered if students are absent. Class tuition cannot be prorated due to student absences.

If you prefer that you or your child not be photographed, please inform the photographer. If we have used a photo or video of you that you would prefer not be used, please contact us by email [email protected], request that we remove the image, and we will be happy to take the photo or video down from our website and not use the photo in future print publications.
