We will learn and gain knowledge of the meaning of STEM, as well as what a scientist is, and the numerous different types of scientists there are. There will be a focus on several specific types of scientists and the real world work that they do. Students will get hands on experience doing some experiments and activities like real scientists. Each day, students will study and complete a variety of activities that focus on different types of scientists: - Chemists and reactions to mixing liquids - Astronomers and studying the night sky - Meteorologists and the weather around us - Entomologist by examining and observing the features/characteristics of insects. - Engineers and the building and design processes to solve real world problems Upon completing the camp students will receive a certificate and the title of Summer Scientist. The camp is geared and best suited for primary students.

July 10th - 14th 8:30am-11:30am Camp Title: Star Wars Science, cost - $125 For students entering grades 4-6 Camp Instructor: Lisa Bruck Description: Have you ever wondered how much of the fictional world of Star Wars is based on real-life science? Are some of the situations in the films possible or simply part of a fantastic story? Now you have the chance to find out! Inspired by the planets, creatures, robots, technology and more from the films, be prepared to use the force in countless discoveries and experiments! And who could forget to mention planetarium time as we learn about galaxies far, far away!

July 17th-21st 8:30am Camp Title: Summer Science Sleuths, cost - $125 For students entering grades 2-3 Instructor: Kendra Hinson Camp Description: What’s in your science sleuth kit? Summer Science Sleuths give children the opportunity to investigate science through interactive and hands-on activities. Super Science Sleuths will build their own science tool kit to take with them as they explore the world of science solving one mystery at a time!

The week will culminate with “Battle Bot” to see whose robot will be crowned the victor of this epic contest!

July 24th-28th 8:30am-11:30am Camp Title: The Art of Science, cost - $125 For students entering grades 3-5 Camp Instructor: Karen McGraw Camp Description: Some of the greatest scientists have also been great artists. Scientists throughout history who have observed the natural world have been inspired to draw, sketch, and even paint the details of their observations. Constellations, planets, the moon, plant life, the weather, animals, landscapes and seascapes are all on the artistic agenda! We will be using the ESSL exhibits to observe and sketch as well as inspire our artworks. We will be participating in a daily sketching periods using the many exciting exhibits. The student’s interest will guide our lessons to allow more choice in their artworks as I introduce them to media techniques and explain the science behind the exhibits. Join us for a week of creative expression inspired by science as we paint, sculpt, sketch, and create collages!

(SSI) During SSI participants will learn about star composition, life cycle, observation, and stellar spectroscopy. Hands-on activities and the latest scientific research throughout the week will be the norm. Participants will create and use a Planisphere and be able to name the seasonal constellations by daily observation in the planetarium. (That’s right! You will get to hang out with the cool people in the planetarium!) During the Mission Discovery phase, camp participants will engage in the most recent NASA missions to various solar system bodies, such as: MESSENGER (Mercury), OSIRIS-REx (asteroid) and New Horizons (Pluto).
