This six-‐day ins-tute will focus on how literacy is changing as a result of emerging media and technologies. We’ll consider the implica-ons of this cultural and technological shi[ for teaching and learning at all levels. Join us in exploring innova-ve approaches now being used by K-‐12 educators, librarians, and college and university faculty, both in and out of the classroom. You will learn how to conduct project-‐based inquiry using a variety of digital texts, tools and technologies, which will help create challenging and engaging learning opportuni-es for you and your students. Topics Include: ü unexpected implica-ons of digital culture on educa-on ü online reading ü teaching digital literacy in the home, school and library ü media literacy and cri-cal thinking across the curriculum ü integra-ng media technology learning ac-vi-es into exis-ng programs ü effec-ve design and implementa-on of online learning ü the role of popular culture and print, visual, sound and digital media in the lives of children and adolescents ü learning new forms of authorship, composi-on, collabora-on and sharing Tips & Tools: In the a[ernoon, get plenty of hands-‐on learning-‐by-‐doing, choosing from a range of workshops where you explore technologies such as blogs, wikis, collabora-ve wri-ng tools, video produc-on, informa-onal websites, iPads, and personal learning environments to foster online learning, cri-cal thinking, crea-vity and engagement. Amazing Texts: Amazing Texts sessions are designed to inform par-cipants of digital resources (websites, videos, books, games, interac-ve media or online content) that have value for teaching and learning. Promising PracIces: Promising Prac-ces Sessions are designed to share digital literacy lessons or ideas that you’ve tried out or that you think have the poten-al to engage and inspire learners in a par-cular context. Research Roundtable: Research Roundtable Sessions are designed to give you -me to share your most recent work, network with others interested in research, and obtain feedback from par-cipants and digital literacy scholars. Leadership Track: Returning for a second year, par-cipants may select the Leadership Track, learning to address management issues of how to lead teams to advance digital literacy through the crea-ve use media and technology. Fees Ø Program Tui+on: $750. Includes tui-on, program materials, opening recep-on, daily refreshments and evening events. Ø Earn 3 Graduate Credits (Op+onal): Earn graduate credit for a flat tui-on fee of $1050. GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN DIGITAL LITERACY. The SUMMER INSTITUTE IN DIGITAL LITERACY is part of a 12-‐credit graduate cer-ficate program offered by Professors Hobbs & Coiro. Fall and Spring courses are taught fully online.
