THE RUBBER DUCKY CLUB: FOR INFANTS THROUGH 35-MONTH-OLDS

Babies are born ready to read, and parents, grandparents and caregivers have an important role as baby’s first teachers. Babies and toddlers love to hear their caregiver’s voice, and reading together is a great way to spend time bonding. Reading to a child also promotes listening, memory and vocabulary skills, language development as well as stimulates the imagination and instills a love of books and learning. The Rubber Ducky Club is the perfect opportunity for caregivers to get into the habit of reading with their child, have fun and learn new ways to encourage early literacy. • Summer Reading Program is open to all, and no library card is required. • Beginning Thursday, June 1, caregivers can get their children started on this pre-reader program by picking up a log from Naperville Public Library or printing one from the library’s website: http://naperville.readsquared.com. • Each child can complete a Rubber Ducky reading log with 12 suggested early literacy activities. • After completing these activities together, the child will be eligible for incentive prizes. • The last day to complete a reading log and receive prizes is Aug. 15.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM: FOR 3-YEAR-OLDS THROUGH 5TH GRADE

• Summer Reading Program is open to all, and no library card is required. • Children from age 3 through those entering 5th grade can receive a reading log either through their school, at the library or by printing from the library’s website: http:// naperville.readsquared.com. • Enjoy reading, win prizes, participate in summer learning clubs and visit the library for fun experiential prizes. • The last day to complete a reading log and receive prizes is Aug. 15.

*SPY CLUB

Calling all kids wanting to be new recruits. Join forces as secret agents, perform daily STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and literacy-based missions and become legendary for helping solve the greatest case in the history of Naperville Public Library. *Program requires advance registration, and participants must attend the entire series of sessions. Limited to 20 kids entering 1st through 5th grades.

Learning clubs are a series of multi-session clubs that offer learning and fun. Participants are expected to attend each session in the series. Each session earns participants credit toward the Children’s Summer Reading Program.

Curious about technology and the way things work? What better way to get acquainted with technology than by taking it apart. A variety of donated technology will be available to disassemble, rebuild or even repair. *Program requires advance registration and participants must attend both sessions. *SEW WHAT? CLUB

Learn how to use a sewing machine and create a project to take home. Each week a new skill will be taught, and as the weeks progress, the projects will increase in skill level. All materials will be provided. Program is limited to eight kids entering 4th through 5th grades. *Program requires advance registration, and participants must attend the entire series of four sessions.

CHILDREN’S SUMMER LEARNING CLUBS



Participants will learn how to design a three-dimensional object using 3-D software as well as the process of printing it using the library’s 3-D printer. Then, they will learn how to design a more complex three-dimensional object. For children ages 8 – 12 years old. *Program requires advance registration with a fee, and participants must attend both sessions. Program is limited to 12 participants. Naperville Public Library cardholders: $10 total for both sessions Non-Naperville Public Library cardholders: $20 total for both sessions

CHILDREN’S WEEKLY STORYTIMES FAMILY STORYTIME

This 30-minute program of stories, songs and other activities is for children of all ages. Strategies will be presented to enhance early learning opportunities at home. At least one parent or adult caregiver is required to accompany children to these fun-filled programs.

RIVERWALK STORYTIMES

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS

Staff will present this popular Riverwalk program, which will include stories, songs and a puppet show. Participants can bring a meal or snack. In the event of inclement weather, this event will be held in the Community Room at Nichols Library. (The Wednesday lunchtime program will be a repeat of the Tuesday evening program.) These programs are presented in partnership with Naperville Park District.

June 5 – July 28 Students entering kindergarten through 5th grade can practice reading, listening to and discussing books in a fun and relaxed atmosphere with a teen volunteer this summer. Depending on attendance, readers may be placed in a group. Children may bring a book or choose one from the library. All participants must be independent readers. Those arriving more than 10 minutes late cannot be guaranteed placement with a partner.

MINI MASTERPIECES

Infants to 23-month-olds can enjoy a baby storytime, and then create a handprint or footprint keepsake. While waiting for their artwork to dry, caregivers can chat, and babies can play with books and toys. Program is limited to 20 participants.

POKÉMON LEAGUE

The Pokémon League kicks off with a celebration of Pokémon at each building with a trivia contest, craft and games. Children may bring Pokémon trading cards to the league to play with or just to show. For Pokémon lovers ages 6 and older.

Learn about the latest and greatest in technology. Children will gain hands-on experience while learning about robotics and other fun tech tools. THE POWER OF PLAY

Adult and child interactive play is critical to language development. Caregivers are invited to the library to play with their child at stations of fun and games, including manipulatives, board games and puzzles as well as items for imaginative play and gross motor activity. For children birth through 5th grade with a caregiver. This is a drop-in program with a room limit of 30.

Get ready to move, bend and stretch while reading fun yoga stories and acting out favorite animal poses. This interactive program will feature stories, songs and simple poses to introduce kids to the world of yoga. Kids should wear comfortable clothing and bring their own mat or towel. Program is limited to 15 children ages 3 to 7 years old.

BARK FOR BOOKS

The dogs are back in town this summer! Kids entering 1st through 5th grades can get a free ticket to read with a therapy dog (Canine Good Citizen) and owner team starting at 11 a.m. the day of the program. These special dogs are all ears for a good story. Parents and siblings are invited to meet the dogs at the conclusion of the program. This program is presented in partnership with Naperville Area Humane Society, PAWSative Therapy Troupe and Two Bostons.

DUPAGE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM PROGRAMS: COME PLAY WITH US AT THE LIBRARY!

DuPage Children’s Museum is taking exhibits on the road! The museum’s early learning specialist and community access coordinator will provide play facilitation techniques utilizing portable versions of full-sized exhibits. In addition, library staff will demonstrate the power of play through storytimes during this drop-in program, which is limited to 30 attendees. This program is presented in partnership with DuPage Children’s Museum.

HILLBILLY SILLY SCIENCE SPECTACULAR

Get ready for an explosive good time with a dash of science, a blob of humor and a hillbilly scientist! Witness Dr. Cletus Beaker’s crazy antics as he puts a unique twist on the world of science experiments.

During this child-and-parent book discussion group, the child and parent/adult will read the selected book together, then attend the club’s meeting to discuss the book with others while enjoying a cookie or two. Each book will be chosen at the preceding meeting and listed on the library’s website, www.naperville-lib. org. The library will have multiple copies of each title available for checkout. For children in 3rd through 6th grades and is limited to 15 child/parent pairs.



FOURTH OF JULY FUN

Celebrate the holiday by enjoying patriotic family storytimes and a craft in the children’s department from Monday, June 26 through Monday, July 3 at all three library locations.

SENSORY GARDEN PLAYGROUND PLAY DAY

Kids can learn using their senses at the Sensory Garden Playground in Lisle, where they can join the library for sensory storytimes and playground exploration. Young explorers will be able to touch, see, hear and smell their way throughout the playground with different activities, including blowing bubbles, drawing with chalk, socializing and more fun activites. Learn to communicate with babies using sign language. This three-week program provides a fun environment for babies and their caregivers to learn the basics of sign language. Each week, a new theme will be introduced using stimulating activities, books, songs and play. For children ages 8 – 23 months. *Program requires advance registration for each date and is limited to 12 babies per program.

Children ages 3 to 5 years old, together with an adult, will explore basic musical concepts using interactive methods. This program will introduce children to music through movement, singing, rhythmic and listening activities. Music will be brought to life through the use of books, props, songs and basic musical instruments in an active and enjoyable way. This program has a limit of 30 children, each with an adult.

NAPERVILLE PLAYS

StoryWalk®

Join this free StoryWalk® at Naperville’s parks that combines the benefits of literacy, physical fitness and family fun. Pages from a featured picture book will be posted along a designated path. Maps will be available at the starting point, and participants can read and stroll at their own pace. At the end of the StoryWalk®, DuPage Children’s Museum will have portable versions of educational exhibits and will serve refreshments. This program is presented in partnership with Naperville Public Library, DuPage Children’s Museum and Naperville Park District. Take a fantastic ride through time celebrating the 1920s through the 1990s. Each month, historian Jim Gibbons will discuss a different decade. This month, Gibbons will focus on the time of change in American history– the 1970s. This 1975 espionage and political thriller stars Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway. The film captures the paranoia and distrust of government in the post-Watergate era, which Roger Ebert called “all too believable.” Based upon the first book in James Grady’s “Condor” series, this movie received the Edgar Award for Best Motion Picture Screenplay as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Film Editing. The Criminal Spines Book Club will discuss the latest book in the “Condor” series, “Last Days of the Condor,” the following evening.

The book club is open to all adult readers, especially those who are learning English. Short stories will be read at a pace determined by the group.
