SUMMER Theatre WORKSHOPS Ages 4-17

For your 4-6 Year Old

Hopkins Center for the Arts

A Really Royal Rumpus What would happen if all of our favorite royal characters threw a big party? We are going to find out! Join princesses Belle, Rapunzel, Elsa, Elena, Tiana, and princes James, Eric, and Aladdin to name a few! They have made a royal decree: “Let’s make a royal rumpus at Stages this summer! ”

Waterfalls & Wayfinding All heroes have to take a journey, but our favorite heroes “journey farther,” right into the ocean! Moana, Ariel, Dory, Swimmy, Rainbow Fish, Old Turtle, and Three Little Mermaids all know the fun and adventure that the ocean holds. Soon your young actors will too! Together, we will use our voices, bodies, and imaginations to create our own underwater tale!

The Wheel Deal Children love wheels of all sorts….cars, trucks, trains, and things that go vroooooom! Inspired by the books The Little Blue Truck, Mighty Mighty Construction Site, The Little Dump Truck, Steam Train, Dream Train, and the Trucktown Series, we want to bring these traveling tales to life using the Actor’s Toolbox!

House of Mouse Mania Welcome to your personal Disney theatre, where we only tell tales of Doc McStuffins, Lion Guard, Puppy Dog Pals, Vampirina, PJ Masks, Jake and the Neverland Pirates and other concoctions from the minds of Disney. Together with a Stages teaching artist, we will dream big, play hard, and adventure to the max! Join us!

STEAM Dreams Little ones are never too young to start learning in all areas! Luckily there are lots of cool books that agree with us. The Most Magnificent Thing; Rosie Revere, Engineer; Ida Peck, Architect; Ada Twist, Scientist; What do you do with an Idea?, If I Built a House; and Dreaming Up will be some of our starting points of creative invention. Using the Actor’s Toolbox, your little ones will have a blast acting out their big ideas!

Draw Me a Story Oliver Jeffers has created some of our very favorite books: the Crayon books, A Child of Books, Here We Are, and Once There Was A Boy...series to name a few. We love the wonder and thought process that his characters take. So we will take it off the page and onto the stage! With creative dramatics, music, and movement, young actors will use their voices and bodies to tell a new joyful Jeffers-like story.

*NEW this YEAR! Care is offered over the lunch hour for young actors that are registered for both morning and afternoon sessions. You must send a packed lunch for your child in addition to the regular snacks. Lunch will not be provided. Care is staffed by our trained STW interns. Monday-Friday, 12 noon-1pm, $50 per child/per week.

For your 7-9 Year Old Rebels and the Dark Side (acting) A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the most epic story ever began. Jedis, Rebels, and galactic species of all kinds Agtes 7-9 have made us want to join in theDesc Rebel Alliance to fight against the Dark Side! Join us--General Leia, Finn, Poe, and Rey need YOU. The opportunities are endless in space! Stages teaching artists will guide students as they create a tale using these popular movies as the starting point. The Force is strong in this workshop. The Mighty Musical Mix (sing and dance) Performing like the next big Broadway star, we are going to take our actors to the next level of confidence! In this workshop, we will develop our “star-power” singing and dancing to our favorite musicals like Mary Poppins, Shrek, The Addams Family, Newsies, and Finding Neverland, Willy Wonka. Your young actors will learn songs and choreography from the shows and connect them through their own group-devised story. I Survived (acting) Welcome to an action-packed week of problem solving imagination! Inspired by the book series of thrilling and amazing stories from history, told through the eyes of the kids who lived them, we are going to make plays out of real-life adventure! Using our Actor’s Toolbox and story structure, we will make it through a dramatic disaster and go on to tell the tale!

Armstrong High School Popstar Party (sing and dance) We love hearing kids sing out the hit songs of the summer every year. Dancing with Timberlake, getting creative like Taylor, or belting out Bruno, we are taking it a step further and adding a story to our favorite tunes. Inspired by Kidz Bop, RadioDisney, and other avenues of kid-appropriate pop music, Stages Theatre Company teaching artists will work with students to adapt music from popular musicians to create unique and original musical stories for the stage. Whodunit: Kid Detectives (acting) Calling all inspectors, detectives, and mystery-solvers! Something’s afoot at Stages Summer Theatre Workshop and we need YOU to help us solve the mystery. Follow in the footsteps of Jada Jones, Nate the Great, Goldie Blox, Encyclopedia Brown, and the Boxcar Children to collect clues, follow suspicions, and draw conclusions. We will bring our showcase audience along on a mystery and help them figure out—WHODUNIT?

Popstar Party Whodunit: Kid Detectives

For your 9-13 Year Old ages 9-13 descrip

Platform 9 ¾ (acting) Hogwarts is back, big-time. With the Cursed Child debut and re-release of the Harry Potter series in graphic novels, it’s time to dig into the magical world with more gusto than ever. Let’s start at the entry point for all new wizards: Platform 9 ¾! It’s time to stop being Muggles and start believing in magic. Combining legends inspired by J.K. Rowling’s series with acting skills, Stages teaching artists and your developing actor will choose a path to explore adventure, intrigue, and the origin stories of this beloved world.

Page to Stage: Applegate’s Gateway (acting) Following the popular Katherine Applegate novels Crenshaw, The One and Only Ivan series, and Wishtree, Stages is taking inspiration from this beloved author to tell stories of family, friendship, conflict, and wild imagination. Geared for building storytelling and dynamic acting skills in your developing actor, these relatable stories show the importance of just being you.

Armstrong High School

Pitch Perfect: The Finale (sing and dance) We are back for one final aca-explosion! Using repertoire from popular music, Stages Theatre Company teaching artists will guide students into learning and using singing techniques to hit new notes, strengthen our ranges, and perform mash-ups of your favorite hits on the radio today! Opening Night (sing and dance) In theatre, it all comes down to one thing: opening night. The show must go on. This summer, we are going to bring (appropriate) musical numbers and scenes from popular shows like Hamilton, Wicked, Les Mis, Dear Evan Hanson, and Legally Blonde to life on our very own sound stage. You’ll want to be in the room where it happens for this musical theatre repertoire! Strong focus on developing triple threats (singing, dancing, acting).

ages 12-7 descrip Write Here, Right Now

This summer, we want to ask our teenagers to dig into the world they live in to find inspiration to tell stories. Inspired by the books and authors you love (Turtles All the Way Down by John Greene, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and The Sun is Also a Star by Nicole Yoon to name a few), we are going to write and perform a play that the actors create from their own lives, hearts, and imaginations. Together we will create a safe place of creativity to form friendships, forge new ideas, and tell important stories.

The Upside Down

We have a confession: we love Stranger Things. Investigative drama and supernatural elements? We are in and we are not the only ones. With books in that vein like Papergirls, Firestarter, The Boys of Summer, we want to explore the upside down of potential stories. During this workshop, we are going to dig into playwriting using these themes as a starting point. Short plays will be prepared and shared at week’s end, with each actor knowing themselves a little better.
