Richard and the team celebrating scooping Salon of the Year at the British Hairdressing Business Awards

Solihull's largest luxury salon, Richard Wallace Hair has had a fantastic year, not only did 2017 see them celebrating a staggering 25 years in business but it also saw them take the title of Salon of the Year 1 at the Hair Journal's British Hairdressing Business Awards. These awards, which were launched almost two decades ago, are some of the most coveted in the industry and focus on elements such as business acumen, innovation, strategic thinking and customer service. The Salon of the Year 1 category recognises single salons with an annual turnover of over £350k, who are judged to have a forward-thinking business. The awards were held at the Westminster Bridge Park Plaza on the 14th September and split out across 17 categories. Comedian Rob Beckett was the compere for the evening alongside HJ's Executive Director Jayne Lewis-Orr in front of an audience of 800 hairdressers from across the country who were all vying for a place in the spotlight that night.

When announcing the winner, Jayne praised the quality and calibre of the team at Richard Wallace saying: “This category is all about celebrating those salons that have a proven business plan in place and the results to prove it. Beyond that, it’s about salons that set the gold standard in terms of best practice for teamwork, marketing, training and customer care. In short, it’s about best-in-class behaviour that gets results. A well-deserved win for Richard Wallace Hairdressing who set the bar for salons across the country.” Upon receiving the award Richard added: "“Wow, we are thrilled to win this award! It’s amazing to be recognised for all of our hard work and it’s so important to balance business with the creative side of the industry. I’d like to thank our amazing team, we couldn’t do this without them!” To find out more about the awards visit: www.hji.co.uk.

Salon Directors Dean Vinning and Dean Robertson, of Sixth Sense Salon in Sutton Coldfield have landed the top prize of West Midlands Employer of the Year in the National Apprenticeship Awards 2017 in the small business category. Sixth Sense made it through the shortlists and tough judging processes for a place at the regional finalist for the West Midlands. The ceremony was held in early October and other winners in this category included BBC, Volvo and Landrover. The two Deans are now looking forward to the National Final which will be held on the 18th January 2018 at the prestigious Grosvenor Hotel in London. This in itself is fantastic achievement, especially when you consider that Sixth Sense are the only salon to make it through to the national finals! Speaking about their recent success Dean Robertson said: "Our apprentices are not only given the full support from our inhouse education team, they also work alongside Heart of England Training, who offer invaluable advice and assessment for both ourselves and the learner. Sue Husband, Director of the National Apprenticeship Service added: "The National Apprenticeship Awards enable talented apprentices and committed employers to receive the recognition they truly deserve. The winners are the best of the best and I congratulate each and every one of them on their success and for those heading to the national finals - the very best of luck." Five years with Fulcrum! Fulcrum Automotive Solutions are a commercial vehicle rental management company that offers a full end to end service for their clients. The company was founded 6 years ago, with three team members, today they now employ a total of 35 staff, 8 of which are currently undertaking an apprenticeship with Heart of England Training. Fulcrum’s first apprentice, Hannah, was taken on in 2012 as the company were looking for a cost effective way to grow their business. Hannah stayed with Fulcrum after completing her Customer Service qualification and only recently left the company to start a family. Since then, Fulcrum has had 18 successful apprentices join their team over the past 5 years and the business is going Pippa, Shanaya, Natalie & Michelle at Fulcrum from strength to strength. The company have ambitious growth plans and have just moved in to a larger office in Leicester Forest East to accommodate their expanding team. Jon Tebbutt, Director talked us through the reasoning behind wanting to invest in apprentices to help build their business. He said: “We were looking to hire someone who we could nuture and develop to fit with our company culture, an apprenticeship is an ideal way to do just that.” The vast majority of apprentices stay with the company after completing their qualifications and Fulcrum enjoys a very low staff turnover. This can be attributed to the company culture, thorough interview and induction process, the variety of job roles and regular opportunities for continuing professional development and progression as well pay reviews following the successful completion of a probationary period. Shanaya is the latest apprentice at the Fulcrum family and has settled in fantastically well. She has already won the coveted Employee of the Month Award and her Assessor, Pippa, has put her forward for a number of Awards, including the Leicester Mercury Women in Business. Michelle Hill, Client Services Manager commented on her experience of taking on apprentices with Heart of England Training saying: “Natalie, our Business Development Advisor, is fantastic she has got to know us, and our values extremely well over the past 5 years and always puts forward a high calibre of candidates for our vacancies. I couldn’t ask for more, I would recommend Heart of England Training as they make the whole process simple and straightforward.” Heart of England Training has enjoyed playing a part in Fulcrum’s continued growth and success and looks forward to working with them for the next 5 years and beyond…

Top marks for our WCC Schools levy event We held a free of charge information seminar in October in partnership with Warwickshire County Council for their maintained schools to offer expert advice and insight into the apprenticeship levy and what that could mean for each school. The event was held on Wednesday 18th October 2017 and welcomed over 10 Heads and Business Development Managers from across the county to our Head Office in Rugby to find out more about the apprenticeship reforms, our school offer and to network with peers and our training staff. Dan Nash, Learning and Development Consultant for Apprenticeship Strategy at Warwickshire County Council, who is responsible for managing the levy spend across Warwickshire's maintained Schools, delivered a short summary on levy funding and Dan delivering his keynote presentation at the event how to spend it effectively. Liam O'Connor, Lead IQA, Pippa Wilkinson, Trainer / Assessor and Riv Monsell, Business Development Advisor from Heart of England Training then outlined various opportunities available to schools including how to get the best value from the Sports Premium and highlighted the key points from the recent reforms. The event was drawn to a close with a Q&A session and all delegates received an information pack to take away with them. We received 100% positive feedback from the event, with every attendee stating that they found it useful, informative and worth attending. A lot of schools which were represented at the event already had apprenticeship provision through other training providers and commented that Heart of England Training were the only provider to have organised an event like this and that our staff were clearly very knowledgeable on all aspects of the reforms and what it means for schools. The event proved so popular that we are now working with Coventry City Council to deliver another event for their schools in the New Year, details of which will be circulated once date and location are confirmed. If you would like to talk to us about organising a levy information event for your school or business please contact Jane on: 07841604089 / [email protected].
