WELCOME ALL

On behalf of The Boston Globe, WGBH, and Citizens Bank, welcome to Boston’s second annual Summer Arts Weekend. We will celebrate and promote Boston’s arts community, from incredible theater and music, to vibrant dance and stunning visual arts. It’s going to be quite a celebration, and we are excited to have you join us. Summer Arts Weekend will bring together local and national artists for a variety of free performances in Copley Square. We’ll dance to the music of Preservation Hall Jazz Band, sing along to family favorite Ben Rudnick and Friends, and relish the ballads of Alison Krauss. These free performances will be followed by intimate, one-of-a-kind ticketed After Dark events. In this relaxed cocktail party setting, attendees will be treated to short-form, intimate performances from the artists who were featured earlier that day on the main stage. In addition to the free events at Copley Square and the After Dark events, this year we will feature a series of Walks & Talks. The expanded programming will feature a stroll down Boston’s historic Newbury Street for a night of art, music, and refreshments, an in-person preview of select works from the WGBH Fine Art Auction, as well as an exclusive Globe Talk with some of Boston’s most well-known chefs. We hope you will take advantage of the week and Boston’s participating diverse array of arts organizations. With music ranging from classical and jazz to bluegrass and soul, there will be something for people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy. Experience and relish the variety that Greater Boston’s arts and cultural community has to offer. On behalf of Citizens Bank, The Boston Globe and WGBH, we look forward to seeing you out there!

FRIDAY, JULY 26 Welcome to the second-annual Boston Summer Arts Weekend. America’s homegrown music and its musical legacy will be on full display Friday night as our artists showcase music from across jazz, soul, bluegrass, Appalachian, and the blues genres. Friday night’s lineup includes performances by the legendary Dr. John, the dynamic all-female Bluegrass band Della Mae, and the young Italian Noe Socha, a recent Berklee College of Music grad. Add a highly anticipated return visit from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, a favorite from last year, and we have the makings of

NOE SOCHA Copley Square Main Stage, 7:00 PM A native of Italy, Noe Socha is a guitar and harmonica musician who plays jazz and blues. After participating in a seminar at Umbria Jazz in 2008, he won a scholarship in the summer of 2009 to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. A recent graduate, Noe Socha has performed at a variety of events and venues, including the National Braille Press Gala, the Berklee Performance Center, the Red Clay Jazz Festival, and more. At every performance, he’s received an enthusiastic response and is quickly establishing an international fanbase.

DELLA MAE Copley Square Main Stage, 7:20 PM Della Mae’s debut album, “This World Oft Can Be,” shows that much like The Avett Brothers, The Lumineers, and Punch Brothers, the five multitalented young women of Della Mae are respectful of American musical tradition, but not restricted by it, combining centuries of musical influences with an emotionally tough, undeniably modern songwriting sensibility. In a relatively short period of time, the band has become a sensation in the music world, commanding a powerful collective chemistry with vocal, instrumental, and songwriting talent to boot. “This World Oft Can Be,” was recorded at Johnny Cash’s cabin in Hendersonville, Tenn. and mixed by Paul Q. Kolderie, who is known for his work with artists like Radiohead, The Pixies, and Uncle Tupelo. The album mines time-honored elements to create music that is unmistakably fresh and contemporary.

He is an American singer-songwriter, pianist, and guitarist whose music combines blues, pop, jazz as well as zydeco, boogie-woogie, and rock and roll. His colorful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex, and Frankie Ford. Dr. John is the recipient of six Grammy Awards. In 2004, his musical love letter to New Orleans, “N’awlinz Dis Dat or D’udda,” was awarded the prestigious Académie Charles Cros 57ème Palmarès award, making Dr. John the first North American artist to receive the award since the 1970s. PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND

PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND Copley Square Main Stage, 9:20 PM The Preservation Hall Jazz Band (PHJB) derives its name from Preservation Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, which was founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. The band has traveled worldwide, spreading their mission to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, for British royalty or the King of Thailand, this music embodies a joyful, timeless spirit. The PHJB began touring in 1963. Many of the band’s charter members performed with the jazz pioneers of the early 20th century, including Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and Bunk Johnson. Band leaders over the band’s history include brothers Willie and Percy Humphrey, husband and wife Billie and De De Pierce, famed pianist Sweet Emma Barrett, and in the modern day, Wendell and John Brunious. These founding artists and dozens of others passed on the lessons of their music to a younger generation who now follow in their footsteps.

SATURDAY, JULY 27 Saturday will deliver one of the most internationally diverse and intriguing lineups of music and dance ever assembled on a single Boston stage. After family-friendly performances by Airborne Comedians, Vanessa Trien & The Jumping Monkeys, and Ben Rudnick & Friends, the Copley Stage will showcase some of the most innovative world music today. Performers include ukulele virtuoso and internet sensation Jake Shimabukuro, piper Carlos Nunez from the Galician area of Spain, the Banghra funk band Red Baraat, and Beninoise sensation Angelique Kidjo. Session Americana and special guests add the vitality and impact of Boston club music to the lineup and help round out today’s blues, country, rockabilly, klesmer, hip-hop, and rock concert.

The Amaryllis Chamber Ensemble takes its name from Bonnie Cochran’s composition, “Amaryllis,” the first piece ever performed by the ensemble. The ensemble continues to maintain high standards of excellence with each new performance by programming works designed to inspire and challenge the audience, including music from the standard repertoire as well as high-quality works from lesser known composers of the past and emerging contemporary composers.
