Key Findings

This map shows the findings of the second returns assessment conducted by REACH to monitor civilian returns to Ar-Raqqa city following the cessation of conflict in late October 2017. Data was collected through interviews and participatory mapping exercises with 12 key informants (KIs) between 10 and 17 December 2017. Findings should be considered as indicative only.

KIs reported: ▪ There are now between 20,000 and 25,000 households residing in the city, an increase from the 15,000 to 20,000 reported one month previously. KIs noted significant difficulties in accurately estimating the number of households living in the city due to ongoing movement around the city. ▪ Meshlab remains the most populated data collection units with 5,000 to 6,000 households, although this has decreased from 8,000 to 10,000 in December. Previously people were staying in Meshlab before returning to their homes elsewhere in the city, this practice has become less common since.

▪ The only data collection units which remain uninhabited are in the centre and north of the city, although KIs reported that some households are making spontaneous short-term visits to these areas in order to inspect and repair shelters, and collect belongings and assets. These visits are mostly made by single males, married males without their families, or married couples without their children. ▪ There is still heavy mine and unexploded ordnance contamination throughout the city, while broken and damaged roads also represent a barrier to movement in the majority of data collection units.
