Dear Professor Tromanhauser, I am delighted to apprise you of Tara Flanigan’s accomplishments during her Fall 2012 internship at the Hudson Valley Writing Project (HVWP). Beginning in September, Tara worked with me and my colleague, Martha Tait-‐Watkins, assisting us with many aspects of event planning and coordination for HVWP's Saturday Seminar program. Each semester, as a public service, we offer three morning conferences for teachers and SUNY Education students. The program is led by HVWP’s teachers, who present workshops on writing and literacy instruction, sharing ideas and student writing from their own classrooms. Tara helped tremendously with the publicity for our seminars. She drafted and distributed informational fliers and created electronic announcements via Constant Contact, an email marketing service for non-‐ profits. She also prepared and copied print materials— handouts, registration forms, signs-‐-‐for each program and organized supplies. The day of each event, Tara helped set up classrooms and oversaw registration, gladly lending a hand with last-‐minute details. Once the workshops started, Tara helped us document each seminar by taking wonderful photographs of the presenting teachers and participants. She is an accomplished photographer and spent much of her own time not only taking photos, but editing them and organizing them along with others in our digital library—very, very helpful. Following each seminar, she helped with such administrative tasks as adding participant names and contact information to our database. When she wasn’t working on the Saturday Seminars, Tara took the lead in creating new promotional materials for our programs, featuring many of her own photos. She is in the process of helping us rethink our modest website and expand our use of social media. Her enthusiasm for this work is readily apparent and contagious. I have enjoyed getting to know Tara, who is polite, very good-‐natured and interested in learning. Her calm, quiet manner belies a fine sense of humor. Tara is extremely conscientious, thoughtful and careful in her work and generous with her time. I was particularly impressed by the way she balanced her coursework with her commitment to HVWP. We are very grateful for the time she has given us. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have about Tara’s internship. It would be a pleasure to speak with you. Sincerely, Jacqueline Denu Associate Director, Hudson Valley Writing Project
