6 PLANNING YOUR HOLIDAY

Tasmania

View from Cape Tourville, Freycinet National Park

Tasmania is an island of contrasts – from the wild and woolly West Coast, World Heritage wilderness and the mighty Franklin River to convict ruins and gastronomic delights. Here, raw beauty meets world-class luxury. Hike through beautiful national parks or sample the abundance of fresh produce including fine wine and boutique beers. Indulge in fresh salmon destined for export across the globe and crisp bubbly that rivals French champagne.

When to go Any time is a great time to visit Tasmania! The summer months of December, January and February are the busiest. However, in winter prices are cheaper and tourists are fewer so you will have more space to explore and experience your own winter wonderland.

Touring Tasmania There’s no better way to discover Tasmania than by car or a campervan (see pages 10–12). Choose a region and spend time exploring at your own pace with your partner, family or friends. We can help you create a great wilderness adventure, a luxury experience or an indulgent weekend getaway to remember forever.

Hobart and Surrounds Nestled in the foothills of grand Mt Wellington, Hobart has a rich heritage and a relaxed atmosphere. The state’s capital, located on the south-eastern coast of Tasmania, is known for its colonial architecture, colourful festivals, world-class restaurants and hip urban bars. In Hobart, trawlers gently rock at Constitution Dock, swelling with the day’s catch of ocean trout, oysters, scallops and prized abalone. Cruise beneath some of Australia’s highest sea cliffs on an eco-adventure cruise off Bruny Island and later catch a show in Hobart’s charming Theatre Royal, Australia’s oldest theatre. Visit Salamanca Market on a Saturday, Australia’s largest outdoor markets and further south you can discover Australia’s convict past at Port Arthur Historic Site.

Launceston, Tamar and the North Tasmania’s second largest city, Launceston, is also Australia’s third oldest city. It has a fine range of accommodation and dining options and is a great base for exploring the state’s north. Experience the vibrant cafes, leafy parks and relaxed tempo of Launceston life. Wander through art galleries, museums and quaint 19th century villages in and around Launceston and follow this with an afternoon picnic at Cataract Gorge, a delightful urban reserve a few minutes’ walk from the city. Slipping slowly north past orchards, forests, pastures and vineyards, the Tamar River links Launceston with Bass Strait. A visit is not complete without a drive through the Tamar Valley, home to some of the state’s finest wineries and dotted with roadside stalls packed with plump strawberries and other fresh farm-gate treats.

The East Coast Tasmania’s east coast is a haven for lovers of white-sand beaches, fishing and slow-paced seaside life. Blessed with mild weather, this lazy stretch of coast invites exploration by foot, kayak, boat or swimming, as well as wildlife spotting. Highlights include the serene waters of Wineglass Bay and the pink granite peaks of Freycinet National Park. For outdoor lovers, why not cool down in a natural water hole in Douglas-Apsley National Park or head out on a deep sea fishing adventure from Bicheno with an experienced local? It’s all here waiting on Tasmania’s east coast, where architecturally designed retreats blend sensitively with seaside villages.

The North West One of Tasmania’s gems, the North West is a magnificent region famous for its coastal heaths, wetlands and ancient rainforests. For fine food lovers, there’s a vibrant cafe culture in both the major towns and seaside villages. In the humble hills of north west Tasmania resides a French chef serving gourmet fare to the exacting standards he delivered at the Ritz in Paris. Further west, in the midst of the Tarkine rainforest, you could be forgiven for believing you are the last being on Earth. In north west Tasmania, rich red soil produces some of the finest produce in the nation as the wild waves of Marrawah draw surfers from around the world.

The Western Wilderness Rugged, untamed and windswept, the west coast reflects nature in her wildest and most beautiful moods. It’s home to the World Heritage-listed peaks of Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park and the rushing waters of the Franklin and Gordon Rivers. Unlock the secrets of this ancient landscape and learn of the bold pioneers on a Gordon River Cruise or scenic helicopter flight from Strahan. The rugged west holds some of Tasmania’s finest natural treasures, from Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park to the far-stretching beauty of Ocean Beach at sunset. Western Tasmania has a fascinating history, from the colonial days of Macquarie Harbour to the wild west mining towns of Zeehan and Queenstown.

The capital of Tasmania and Australia’s second oldest city, Hobart lies in the foothills of Mt Wellington and along the Derwent River. It’s a beautiful summer destination, on warm afternoons the sea breeze blows and yachts tack across the river. In winter, the snow-capped peak of Mt Wellington is the perfect backdrop to a long, lazy fireside lunch in one of many cafes and restaurants. Established in 1803, the city maintains its rich history – visit Battery Point, one of the finest colonial suburbs in Australia. Head to Salamanca Place for all kinds of shopping – from galleries to outdoor adventure clothes and designer threads. Or explore Hobart’s waterfront and indulge in an ocean-fresh rock lobster lunch.
