BRIEFLY Hamilton man killed on train track Police have identified the man killed on the railway lines north of the Alexandra Street crossing as 27-year-old Michael Anthony Ashton of Hamilton. Mr Ashton was hit by a train at about 4.20 am on Sunday. He was believed to be lying asleep on the tracks and died as a result of the collision. The line was closed for about three-and-a-half hours following the accident. Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Kawhia display for New Year Kawhia will bring in the New Year in style again with another fireworks spectacular planned. Co-organiser Lou Sherman says businesses in Te Awamutu, Otorohanga, Te Kuiti and Kawhia have generously supported the midnight fireworks display again this year.

Kindness appreciated There is still time to make a young person happy this Christmas by donating a gift at The Warehouse. Community Constable Richard Hurrell, Youth Aid Officer Neal Webb and The Warehouse Te Awamutu manager Willie Hall are rapt with the response to date for gifts for deserving families. The gifts should be wrapped and labelled as to whether they are suitable for a girl or boy and what approximate age group. WINZ, CYPFS and schools have assisted identifying worthy recipients and the gifts will be distributed tomorrow and Thursday.

Regent Theatre summer treats Regent Theatre has been upgraded yet again this year and features an interesting mix of movie entertainment over the holiday period. Check out the advertisement on page 19 and the article on page 18 for more details.

Mutu Street resident Shirley Stirling has overlooked Memorial Park for many years and noted that its 50th anniversary came and went without celebration. Her husband, the late Bill Stirling, took the photos to the right on opening day showing how important the event was to Te Awamutu and district. The images also show how the park has grown and developed. The park was opened on Sunday, December 4, 1955 by then Prime Minister Sidney Holland. The project began in 1947 when three schemes were proposed to the Te Awamutu Borough Council and a ‘memorial park’ chosen as the most fitting way to honour those who fought and died in World War II. Over successive years three mayors, G. Spinley, F. Parsons and C.F. Jacobs chaired the Memorial Park committee. In 1950 the idea was sold to the public, but slow progress raising money almost halted the project. A year later it was back on track and earthworks commenced. In February, 1952 the Memorial Park committee held its monthly meeting on site, a tradition they kept going to keep up the interest in the project and to keep a close eye on progress. When it opened was hailed as a tremendous asset for the district. A tribute was paid to H Babbage, who was the designer, planner and supervisor. FOOTNOTE: At the opening ceremony Boer War veteran Albert Berry of Pokuru marched with his RSA colleagues from ‘Big Tree Corner’ to the park, then collapsed and died.

Albert Park concert to raise funds for vital operation An outdoor concert at Albert Park in January will raise funds for a vital operation for local woman, Malanie Elison. She was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in August last year and her rapid physical deterioration has prompted her whanau to seek whatever means available to assist her. “Fortunately, there is a miracle operation (stem cell surgery) available in Japan that will dramatically improve Lani’s condition,” says whanau member Theressa Ball. The cost of making this possible is around $40,000, but her whanau are determined to raise the money. Some fundraising projects have

already been undertaken, including a hangi, but the Albert Park concert on January 14 is the major fundraiser. “Eight well known New Zealand bands are kindly giving their services towards the cause,” Theressa Ball says. These include Nesian Mystic, Adeaze, Flow on Show, BDS, Black Rose and more. David Wikaira-Paul (Tama) and Pua Magasiva (Vinnie) from Shortland Street will act as MCs. Katchafire have donated personally signed prizes. Tickets are on sale and cost $25 for adults (children under 13 free). They are available from Theressa Ball (phone 871 4892 or email

Stay vigilant: Police Learning motorbike As the final rush to Christmas takes place, and then the relief and relaxation of the holidays that follow, Te Awamutu Senior Sergeant Dave Simes warns the public to continue with basic safety. With the approach of Christmas, trees are decorated and placed in a prominent position in the family home and generally visible from the street. If this is the case in your home please do not place wrapped gifts at the base of the tree where they are visible by the passing public. Place gifts out on Christmas Eve. A little planning can save a lot of grief for your family. Whilst out shopping ensure all purchases placed in your vehicle are concealed in the boot or under a cover in a station wagon. Offenders target car park buildings, shopping malls and high density car park areas around rural towns ‘shopping’ from your car if you risk leaving purchases openly on display in the interior of your locked vehicle to provide gifts purchased by you for their families. While shopping, particularly in supermarkets, do not leave handbags sitting open in trolleys, exposing your wallet to the unsuspecting thief. While turned away from your trolley selecting products from the shelf, the thief walks past and at the same time lifts your wallet from your handbag and will be using your credit cards fraudulently before you realise your wallet has been stolen. If you are going away complete a maintenance check of all locks, latches and ensure all windows and doors fit and secure correctly. Check your alarm is functioning correctly, has been recently serviced and contacts in the event of an activation are current and will be at home during your absence. It may be necessary connect to a monitoring company short term if no one is available to respond. Advise neighbours of your holiday plans, destinations and contact phone numbers in the event of an emergency at your residence. Please ensure mail and papers are stopped. Letter boxes stuffed full of mail are an open invitation to offenders. Ensure all vehicles, including trailer,

boats and caravans, are road worthy and legal. If leaving your trailer unattended on the roadside, at the batch or camping ground please use a locking mechanism to ensure they cannot be coupled up to a vehicle and removed. Whilst travelling remember the slogan - Drive, Revive and Survive. Take regular breaks from driving to overcome fatigue. When towing or driving at a slower speed be courteous to other road users and pull over and let vehicles building up behind pass. Better to receive a toot of thanks than other gestures or abuse from frustrated motorists. Boaties, dont forget to service your boat and ensure emergency equipment such as life jackets, flares, radios and auxiliary motors are in good working order. It is too late once on the water and an emergency arises. The area you are holidaying in may have active offenders targeting vehicles, baches, boats and camp sites and therefore it is extremely important to ensure items of value are correctly secured. Items such as cellphones, loose change and sunglasses left on display in vehicles in car parks, parked on the side of the road or at beach resorts are open invitations for offenders. Sure you go on holiday to relax but don’t relax your normal security standards for your boat, car, bach or personal effects. Should you be the victim of an offence or incident that requires reporting to the Police please complete that task at your holiday location and dont wait three weeks until you return to work. Offenders from your holiday location will also have moved on. For those not going away on holiday please be vigilant and keep an eye on your neighbours’ address. Should you observe offences being committed or suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, ring the police immediately. It may be holiday time for you but offenders take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself. Be assured there will be sufficient Police staff working in your community to deal with any situation that arises.

ners, and he says they were such quick learners he had them riding within a minute. Most children didn’t want the sessions to stop. Mr Bryant and his staff were overwhelmed by the response to the courses and the letters of appreciation they received from those who took part. By Cathy Asplin All Black Anton Oliver can rattle off all the places he’s stopped on his book signing tour - but some have been more memorable than others. “In the Riccarton Mall a blonde two-year-old called Reuben did a great haka for me, in Balclutha they fed me hotdogs, but Winton was outstanding they gave me a beer while I was signing books!” He says he’s met some wonderful people during the eight day tour that brought him to Te Awamutu last Thursday. “It’s been great really - people have been very kind leaving me letters and cards or telling me how much they like the book. “One mum even told me I’ve inspired her sons to read, which is pretty cool really.” His book ‘Anton Oliver Inside’ has been a steady seller at Paper Plus Te Awamutu, with around 20 being personally signed for fans on the day and many more autographed for store stock.

YOUR LETTERS

Ruining country through ‘PC’ My wife and I were married for 47 happy years before she died in 1999. We bought up six children in this time, who are now all grown and have kids of their own and are all paying tax, as I have all my life. I have never been without a job. The politicians of today in my opinion are the lowest of low. I am saying this is because when I retired in May, 1995 they had a tax system in that

was called super surtax. This meant if you were collecting your pension and working at the same time they would charge you 70 cents in the dollar tax. So on retirement the last payment I got was $45,000 $30,000 being long service pay and the rest what was owing for holiday pay etc. Well of that $45,000 they left me with around $10,000 to retire on. And now, the stupid politi-

cians are paying the inmates in prison heaps of compensation because of some little thing that does not matter. I am just wondering what sort of people run this country, who would take all the savings off pensioners and give it to prisoners who have hardly paid tax in their whole lives. I feel that the politicians are absolutely ruining this country. BOB ROSS

ENVIROSCHOOL The potato growing contest is just one of the greenfingered activities happening on a regular basis at Wharepapa South, which is now one of the country’s Enviroschools. Pupils have also been growing an edible garden in their raised garden (pictured above right, behind pupils), which conveniently produced lettuce for the hamburgers enjoyed after the potato weigh-in. The garden also produces carrots, radishes, tomatoes, parsley, gher-

kins, silverbeet, capsicums and beetroot. Marigolds have been planted to keep bugs at bay and to mark rows. Students also have helped maintain a bush area at the school and take great pride in their school environment. Their projects have been under the guidance of teacher Lindy Beal, who is leaving the school this week. Mrs Beal has had a long association with the school. She attended Wharepapa South as a pupil (Lindy Davis),

returned as a Year 2 teacher, then was on the PTA and a reliever when her own children attended the school. She returned 10 years ago as a classroom teacher and has been a valued member of the staff ever since. Principal Rosemary Cook says the school is sad to see her go. “We’ll mill miss her terribly - the children love her.” No doubt Mrs Beal will have her arm twisted to relieve at the school on occasion and she will be a regular visitor for community events.

By Cathy Asplin There’ll be plenty of fresh, new potatoes for Christmas lunch at Wharepapa South this year. Not all of them will be terribly big, mind you, but they have been grown with plenty of ‘TLC’ by pupils. Their efforts were literally ‘unearthed’ by Kihikihi Rotary Club at the Wharepapa School potato weigh-in last week. Each pupil was given a bucket and a seed potato by Rotary earlier this year, with instructions on how to grow them. While it was clear one or two students didn’t follow the guideline too closely, most had a good collection of potatoes to show for their efforts. Marian Uram said he put compost in when he planted his seed potato, watered it every day and made sure it got plenty of sun. He was well rewarded with 832g worth of potatoes. Best effort came from Odette McFarlane, whose bucket produced over a kilo of potatoes (1105g). Blaire FullertonSmith was close behind with 1045g, while both shared the title for heaviest single potato (250g). And the pupils’ reward for growing their potatoes in buckets? What else, packets of potato chips, of course from Kihikihi Rotary.

Owners Robyn and Andrew Barker have been working hard to update Whitby since they took over in April. Manager Angela Rogers joined them in May and the three have thrown their efforts into the project. Now known as Whitby Homestead, the business specialises in farm park tours, horse stud tours, business functions and private functions. The Ohaupo Road property has always been known for its gracious homestead, tranquil gardens and warm hospitality. mercial kitchen. The homestead has been redecorated using a linked colour theme throughout and looks a picture coming up to Christmas. One of the talking points is one of Mr Barker’s loves - a full suit of armour and medieval weaponry. The choice of dining areas ranges from formal in the homestead to relaxed in the cafe area and casual on the terrace. Concertina doors and a large awning area with removal sides allows for any change in the weather and means up to 120 people can be seated for meals. The style of meal is dependent on the type of event and the clients’ requests. “All our meals are pre-booked in conjunction with special interest tours - either looking at the farmyard animals, horse stud or gardens. “Currently we have had smorgasbord and barbecue styled meals, but in the future we can have ‘sit-down’ options or cater specifically to what people would like.” Music can also be

provided to fit the occasion - from background music to a disco or band. The property has 2.8 hectares of grounds which includes established, tranquil gardens, the farm animal park and the Arabian horse breeding stud. It was through equestrian circles that the owners first met Miss Rogers. She makes an ideal manager with hospitality experience and equine knowledge. The stud has ‘shuttle’ stallions which are leased from overseas and horses that are shown all over New Zealand. Mrs Barker says Whitby is a beautiful place in a perfect location. “It’s gorgeous here and a very central spot. Te Awamutu is a great town and we are enjoying it here. ” Whitby Homestead will stage an open day and plans to have its official opening in January, but receives regular enquiries and is currently taking bookings for tours with meals. Foodbank grateful On behalf of the Combined Churches Foodbank I’d like to say a sincere ‘thank you’ to the Rosetown Choristers and friends for making us the beneficiaries of their recent concert. We in the audience really enjoyed their enthusiastic singing and instrumentals. It was an added bonus to bear away the booty - both cash and food donations. The Foodbank volunteers really appreciate your generosity as will, I’m sure, any families who will benefit from your thoughtfulness. Thanks also go to all organisations, groups and individuals who have contributed to the Foodbank this past year. May you all enjoy a truly happy Christmas. MAUREEN GEORGE

While at Te Awamutu, the national development squad members played an ambrose with the host club’s up-and-coming juniors on Monday night. Fenton says the experience was enjoyed by both his boys and the juniors. One youngster to catch the eye of the visitors was Oliver Barnsdall. The seven-year-old travels from Piopio to Te Awamutu Golf Club every week (Mondays) for coaching with Jurg Russenberger. “He’s a very good talent for his age. The boys commented on how good he was.”

The coaching school should have these members of the national boys’ development squad in peak form for a heavy schedule in the new year. Wallace shines for adopted Walton By Colin Thorsen Waipa tennis coach Quentin Wallace is the toast of Walton. Wallace beat Lugton Park’s Martin Rossi in straight sets, in the deciding singles, to clinch Walton the Perrys Waikato premier interclub title at the ASB Tennis Centre in Hamilton. The small country club, near Matamata, needed Wallace to win to clinch the title, while Lugton needed a Rossi victory (in straight sets) to force a countback of games. While rapt to have clinched the title for his adopted club, Wallace says it was a pity that he was not carrying the Te Awamutu flag. Te Awamutu were unable to field a team in the premier grade this season. Wallace played the majority of matches for Walton, losing just the one game to Lugton Park’s John Irving, when promoted to No 3 earlier in the season. It was a fairytale ending to the competition for the first time entrants

Walton. The club have two courts in the middle of a paddock for their base. Their members are made up from the rural community and have a solid group of junior players. Player/manager Grant Wills initially entered the team for himself and his son Beau, a top junior, to improve their tennis. He managed to recruit Wallace, along with Waikato performance coaches Gerit Steenkamp and Werner Venter, and Matamata’s well performed Mark Hedley. That meant the father and son duo were reserves. They filled in from time to time. Two season’s ago, Wallace was a member of the victorious Te Awamutu team in the post Christmas premier grade two-man competition in Hamilton. Simon Kay also featured in the team, along with a couple of ‘ring-ins’ from Hamilton.

Waipa to fore in regional sports awards

HOT SHOT Quentin Wallace.

3560510AD

A sensational year for our sportspeople resulted in Waipa District winning seven out of the 13 categories at the 2005 Perry Foundation Waikato Regional Sports Awards. They included Te Pahu netballer Laura Langman winning junior sportswoman of the year and Te Awamutu Phantom Kickboxer coach Rick Dobson winning administrator of the year. Waikato Chiefs’ captain Jono Gibbes took out the fairplay award. Around 400 guests, including sportspeople, LAURA LANGMAN family, friends and supporters, filled the Mystery Creek Convention Centre to acknowledge the Waikato region’s top sporting achievers. They were entertained by MC Ronny Phillips and guest speaker Keith Quinn. Sport Waikato CEO Matthew Cooper was thrilled with the high calibre of nominees at the awards. “The number of top sportspeople, teams, coaches, administrators and referees present at these awards demonstrates the great depth of sporting talent developed in the Waikato RICK DOBSON region”. The judges had a tough job this year, particularly in the hotly contested category of Team of the Year, with favourites Caroline & Georgina Evers-Swindell up against the Northern Districts Knights and Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic. Rowing, netball and cricket dominated the awards after a great year in each of their respective sports, with a number of nominees in coach, team and the sportsperson categories.

WAIPA RACING CLUB TE AWAMUTU

Christmas Eve Race Meeting

Saturday 24th December 2005 First Race starts 12.15pm COACH Neal Webb with his highly promising Te Awamutu College javelin thrower Juan Brooks-Tikitiki. Webb has been appointed coach of the Waikato team for the New Zealand senior athletics championships in Christchurch from January 26-29. He will also coach the Waikato under-16 and under-19 teams at the national age group championships in Hamilton on File photo February 25-26. real talent at the nationals,” says coach Webb. Although not a Te Awamutu College athlete, Katherine Camp trains with the squad. She had a good weekend, making the semi-finals of the junior girls’ 400m, with a personal best time of 61.30 seconds, and placing 16th in the long jump. Other College athletes to produce personal best performances at the nationals: Junior boys: Jessie Bright, 100m (12.32), 200m (25.45), triple jump (10.92); Steven Fleming, 100m (12.52), 200m (25.68);

Five Te Awamutu College athletes managed top 10 placings at the New Zealand Secondary School Championships at Erricson Stadium, Auckland. Juan Brooks-Tikitiki fared best placing fourth in the junior boys’ javelin with a throw of 46.14 metres. He was only 1½ metres off a gold medal. Laura Sinclair finished just out of the medals in the junior girls’ 4km road race. She placed fifth equal in a time of 15.26 minutes, 26 seconds slower than the first placed girl and only two seconds adrift of the bronze medallist. Sinclair also produced a personal best time in the 1500m of 5.04.79. College coach Neal Webb says Ryan Patterson must have felt cheated, not making the final, after recording the fifth fastest 100m time of the weekend (10.97) in his quarter final. After an uncharacteristic slow start in the semi-finals, he caught the field on the line but finished fifth - only the top four from the semis went to the finals. Patterson’s time in his quarterfinals would have given him the gold medal. Ashley Webb, without solid preparation over the winter, was unable to improve on her seventh placing of last year in the senior girls’ triple jump. She still put up a fight to finish ninth, just seven millimetres behind the eigthth placegetter with a jump of 10.52m. Ian Vincent produced an outstanding personal best of 6.43m in the senior boys’ long jump to finish 10th. This was way past his previous best jump. Due to other commitments, Vincent joined the College squad late in the season. “He quickly made up for lost time and showed that he is a

‘Gloomy Sunday’, ‘Together’, ‘The Chorus’, ‘Being Julia’, ‘Ladies In Lavender’, ‘My House In Umbria’ and many others, which would not have ever played in Te Awamutu, previously. The cinema is also very pleased to advise patrons they feel they have gone completely mad and spent another $70,000 on projection and sound in this popular little cinema this year with stunning results. A new speaker system will be in place early next year, making your viewing complete. The first of the three new films is ‘Joyeux Noel’, which is the remarkable story of the men in the trenches during WW1 and the truce that amazingly occurred on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. A true and wonderful portrayal and one which will affect you considerably. The next, is a truly wonderful story from India, about the lives of two children who meet in a carpet factory, where they are very poorly treated, having been sold out by their parents. They swear to see each other, in the future, if they manage to escape the ‘prison’. Fate steps in and they lead separate lives longing to be together. This is truly a very touching and beautiful, but very tragic story. It is up there with the very best of all-time quality showcase features. Finally, another story showing the effects on a boy (to manhood) suffering from a severe beating by some boys because he was a talented musician in a very small, isolated community where he was not accepted by his peers.

Merry Christmas to everyone from the team at Russ Water Services!

This was to affect his entire life but he had a dream to fulfil – to make music inspire people. It shows what people can be like in an enclosed environment and how one person can change their whole outlook on life. It’s a very sincere story and is also very beautifully told. These three compelling films are very special and will become classics in their own right. Owner Allan Webb is pleased to have been lucky enough to procure these films, that a couple of years ago would never be able to have been screened in a small location such as ours. He says Hopscotch, Polyphony, Rialto Entertainment and Sony Pictures have been very supportive by providing these very wonderful programmes and they hope that you will appreciate them as much as they do. Dendy (new distributors to New Zealand) is very keen to offer some of their special attractions scheduled for 2006. Another showcase feature that we have been holding back on, waiting for the right time to release it, was an extremely popular film at the Victoria in Hamilton and is one of Grace’s favourites, called ‘Photos To Send’ and is another to watch out for in the New Year. On the more commercial side, there is a sensational line-up of films over the summer vacation; ‘Harry Potter’, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’, ‘King Kong’, ‘Zathura’, ‘Cheaper by the Dozen 2’ and the latest ‘Zorro’ film. Also, special family programmes have been arranged; ‘Chicken Little’, ‘Nanny McPhee’ and ‘Valiant’. The staff and management of The Regent Cinema wish you all happy holiday viewing.

A SPECIAL SHOWCASE PRESENTATION. A really remarkable story; harsh, sad, heartfelt, real and wonderfully cast. A beautifully photographed, impeccably acted and intelligently written masterpiece... filmmaking of the highest order. An absolute must for the discerning viewer. We have to give this very moving film an extremely high recommendation.

CS Lewis’s classic tale comes beautifully to life with this lush and sweeping adventure. This movie does a fine job of blending live actors and settings with the talking beasts, dwarfs, centaurs and assorted mythical creatures. A very popular and favourite tale now on the cinema screen. “I was engaged and enthralled from beginning to end.” Sun Herald.

A happy, humorous and clever family entertainment from Britain, with great heartfelt storytelling.
