NATIONAL POETRY DAY Class 2S had a special visitor this week on National Poetry Day. Mr Corlett, our Chair of Governors came into school to read some of his favourite poems linked to this year’s National Poetry Day theme – ‘Light’. The children liked this one especially . . .

We understand that some parents/carers are not able to attend events due to work commitments, but please look upon these events as simply opportunities that we offer – they are not compulsory and we certainly do not want parents/carers to feel guilty if they cannot attend. We will always do our best to make sure that all of the children enjoy themselves and that there are lots of staff there to make all of the children feel important and special.

GREENFIELDS’ EARLY YEARS & PRE-SCHOOL PROVISION Those of you who have been on the school playground recently will have seen that lots of building work has been going on at the old Wideopen Nursery that closed during the Summer holidays. I am very pleased to tell you that our governors have agreed with the council that we will be moving our Pre-School provision into the newly renovated building after half term. This will give us a fantastic opportunity to expand our Early Years provision, with 2 year olds, Nursery children and ‘Wraparound’ extended services all based in the new Pre-School building. Mrs Coyle and her team are busy planning the move, including making sure that the children are all fully prepared. Our existing Nursery space will be remodelled for the Reception children to move into before Christmas and the existing Reception classrooms will become a brand new school library and a technology room for the whole school to use after Christmas. I’m sure that you will agree that these developments will greatly enhance the education we provide and we look forward to showing you around the new spaces when all work is complete,

ST COLUMBA’S ‘MESSY CHURCH’ Paula and her team would like to extend a very warm invitation to all children to go along to Messy Church at St Columba’s on Tuesday 20th October.

Children can go straight from school and enjoy refreshments, a choice of craft activities, stories and songs. Parents or carers will need to accompany children under 8 years of age.

‘FOG’ AUTUMN TERM DISCO REMINDER The Fancy Dress Disco will be on Tuesday 20th October.

The Nursery, Reception and KS1 disco is from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. (children must be accompanied by a parent or carer). The KS2 disco will be from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Please make sure that staff know about collection arrangements for your child. Entry fee will be £1 per child and refreshments will be on sale at both discos.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AWARD

Greenfields has again been awarded the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of our work to bring the world into the classroom. The International School Award is a badge of honour for schools that do outstanding work in international education, such as through links with partner schools overseas. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that children and young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need to live and work as global citizens. Two of our Y6 pupils went to collect our award on Tuesday. They had a brilliant time listening to the guest speaker Niall McCann, who is an explorer, adventurer, zoologist and TV presenter. He entertained everyone with his tales from around the world in his role as conservationist of endangered animals. Thank you to Mrs Coyle, Mrs Cockman and Mr Corlett who accompanied the children to collect our very special award.

FINALLY . . . Please remember that school will be closed on Friday 23rd October and Monday 2nd November for staff training (INSET) days. The calendar for the full school year is below:
