That Rugby Ball Approx 5” long

Well, New Zealand is hosting the Rugby World Cup 2011 and it starts today! It occurred to me that we need to make a pin-cushion/toy/bean bag/hand warmer/hanging ornament in the shape of a rugby ball to celebrate the World Cup!

This fun little rugby ball is quick to make and only takes a small amount of fabric and filling.

Requirements: Strip of fabric 3” x 28” (or 3” x 14” each of 2 fabrics) Filling (polyester/wool/grain or pellets) Cord for hanging ornament 10” Stranded embroidery cotton for big stitches

All cut out and ready to sew!

Cut out 4 ball section. The pattern shape includes 1/4” seam allowance.

Step 1: Lay two pieces right sides together and stitch down one side, repeat with the other 2 pieces. (If using 2 colours, place one of each together so they will alternate round the ball).

Step 2: Open out the two pairs and place them right sides together. Pop a pin in where the seams meat top and bottom and leaving a gap of approximately 2” on one side, stitch all the way around.

Step 3: Turn ball out the right way and stuff, fairly firmly if using a soft filling. If using pellets or grain, fill the ball fairly full, this makes a great heavier bean bag style ball. Slip stitch the opening closed. Using all 6 strands of embroidery cotton, stitch some large straight stitches over one of the seam line to indicate the heavy stitching of a rugby ball.

For hanging ornament: Follow Step 1 - then:

Tie a knot with the 2 ends of the cord.

Position over seam at the top and pin in place between the two layers

Continue with Step 2 and Step 3

I do hope you enjoy this little fun rugby ball! I love the feel of the bean bag ball, I have filled it with rice and it has a delicious “thonk” sound and feel! Also great as a pincushion or a toy, and just imagine them hanging around! The grain filled ones would also make terrific little “wheat bags” that can be warmed or cooled, just imagine a warm rugby ball to keep your hands warm!
