That’s What Ygritte Said A weekly Game of Thrones newsletter by Sam Ryu

KILL THE BOY - SEASON 5, EPISODE 5 And just like that, we are already at the midpoint of the season. While seasons feel shorter and the waits in between feel longer, the beat relentlessly goes on. Relentless like Ramsay’s thirst for weird sex and flaying (the two are probably related). Relentless like the flow of wine into the cups of Cersei and Tyrion. Relentless like the grammarian impulses of Stannis Baratheon. Brace yourselves. The One True King All hail Stannis of the House Baratheon, First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm, the Lord of Light’s Chosen, Father of the Year, and Defender of Proper Grammar— the One True King. (And don’t you dare tell me to use less fewer titles to

describe him.) Not only was Stannis’s correction of First Builder Yarwyck’s grammar a great moment for his character and grammar nerds alike (in case you missed it: Yarwyck says, “Less enemies for us.” “Fewer,” corrects Stannis.), it was also a callback to when Stannis corrected Davos for the same mistake back in S2E4 (scene here)—making Davos’s confusion in this scene even funnier. Sidebar: Express Lanes at your neighborhood grocery stores are erroneously labeled “10 Items or Less”—these should read “10 Items and Fewer.” Oh and he also told Samwell Tarly to “keep reading.” Stannis—a true patron of language arts. If the whole claiming-the-Iron-Throne thing doesn’t work out for him, he and Shireen can start their own Sesame Street or Reading Rainbow-type show for the illiterate masses. Beyond Northern Geography

Tormund is taking Jon with him to Hardhome. Why? Because that’s where all the wildlings are hanging out and Lord Commander Snow wants to rally/save them. Why do they need to borrow Stannis’s ships? Because... look at the map. You can also see several key locations around and beyond the Wall. Sam suggests that the wildlings can settle in the Gift—the region immediately south of the Wall, given to the Night’s Watch by House Stark many centuries ago. Remember Me? Walda Bolton (née Frey)—colloquially known as Fat Walda—is not just the carrier of Ramsay’s potential competition. She also played a crucial role in the initial formation of the secret Bolton-Frey alliance leading up to the Red Wedding. Roose Bolton recounts, "Lord Walder let me choose any of his granddaughters and promised me the girl's weight in silver as a Walda Bolton, S4E2 dowry—so I have a fat young bride." (S3E9) Loose Ends - Dragons are hungry. I don’t think one human body between them is enough. - Occasional reminder: Maester Aemon is a Targaryen—Daenerys’s great-uncle. - Sansa is back in Northern clothes. Still Black Swansa inside though. - Roose gives the “you are my son” speech to Ramsay. Unsurprisingly not as warm and fuzzy as Stannis’s “you are my daughter” in the previous episode. - Don’t worry, everyone. Princess Shireen will protect Ser Davos in battle. - Grey Worm showing emotion might hint at trouble for the Unsullied. - All that talk of greyscale finally pays off with an attack from the Stone Men. - I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Drogon is roaming about in Valyria. Could Daenerys find the secret to training/riding dragons in her ancestral home? - TED video about the real history in Game of Thrones. (h/t: Coralyn L.)
