The 12 (Safe) Days of Christmas Here’s some quick and easy things to do to help you finish the year on a safe note: 1

Clean up

Clean the fridge

Tidy sites are safer sites. Now’s the perfect time to clean up the site and tidy up the tool shed.

Clean out the fridge in the smoko room. Milk won’t make it til 2016 and if anything in there smells like cheese or old socks, chuck it (unless it IS cheese or old socks).

Lock down

Be informed

Make sure the site can be locked down. Check perimeter fences, entry/exit points – building sites are fun places for burglars and neighbourhood kids to play!

H & S legislation is changing; find out what you need to do here: www.worksafe.govt.nz

Buy gifts

Don’t get sun burnt 9

Go shopping for your wife/gf/bf/ mum. Don’t leave it til the last minute like last year. And no she doesn’t want a car cleaning kit. Or an iron.

Be sun safe - on site and everywhere else. Wear sun screen, cover up exposed bits and always have a pair of (safety) sunnies on hand.

Get stuff fixed Ideally gear should be maintained throughout the year, but now’s a good time to check gear is in tip top condition. If it’s not, get it fixed, oiled, serviced, sharpened, tightened or chucked out.

5

Secure vehicles Make sure any vehicles on site are securely locked and alarmed. See no. 2 re: burglars and kids...

6

Check tags Get tagging. While you’re cleaning out and clearing up, check the tags on ladders, scaffolds, electrics etc to make sure they’re current and compliant.

Take safety home

If you’re using a ladder to put up the Christmas tree, make sure it’s on level ground, don’t lean over the side and make sure the stays are in place. Christmas light cords and large gifts lying around are tripping hazards. Pop them well under the tree or leave the really big ones in the garage (with the keys).

Take your PPE on holiday!

It comes in handy when playing backyard cricket, barbecuing and crossing busy roads.
