The 19th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival presented by Pacific Sales is proud to present its 2018 Latin Showcase, an evening celebration of Latin cinema and culture. The event will take place on Wednesday, May 2nd and will kick off with film spotlights from Mexico, Chile, and Brazil at The Triangle cinema, followed by a post-screening gala at Time Nightclub. The evening will feature culinary tastings by Orange County’s top restaurants, multiple DJs, live entertainment, a special performance by the Grammy Award winning Mariachi Divas, and a hosted bar by Tequila Herradura. The Mexican Spotlight will screen the feature film The Grand Promise (La Gran Promesa) at 7:45 p.m. The film centers around a young man who must—as a last resort— kidnap his own newborn daughter to prevent her custody from falling into the wrong hands. Outrunning the authorities, he sacrifices his citizenship and career by retreating to Europe after leaving his child in the care of his close friends in Mexico. Decades later, he must find a way home—whatever the cost. The Grand Promise is directed by Jorge Ramirez-Suarez and stars Juan Manuel Bernal, Illithya Manzanilla, Sam Trammell and Sofia Espinosa. The Chilean Spotlight will screen the feature film ‘The Desert Bride (La Novie del Desierto)’ at 8:00 p.m. Directed by Cecilia Atán and Valeria Pivato, The Desert Bride follows Teresa (Paulina Garcia), a Chilean live-in maid with deep roots in Buenos Aires. When her employers sell their home, Teresa is forced to find other opportunities and travels across the country to San Juan. She loses her bag with all her belongings in the desert, but finds hope in a traveling salesman named El Gringo (Claudio Rissi) who helps her in more ways than one. The Brazilian Spotlight will screen the feature Rust (Ferrugem) at 7:45 p.m. Rust follows classmates Tati and Renet, who have formed a relationship through their cell phones. A school weekend trip grants them the perfect opportunity to connect in person, but things take a different turn when a sexual video of Tati is leaked and goes viral among her peers.
