Welcome

A N OT E F RO M T H E A R TIS TIC DIR EC TO R —

I am thrilled by the creativity emanating from our JIFF 2017 line up of 65 films from 26 countries. The stories reach far into history and deep into human experience: from the cornerstone achievements of Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx, J.D. Salinger and Joseph Pulitzer to the quirky detail of Louis Armstrong with his Magen David ode to the Jewish family that bought him his first trumpet. From the actors embodying us over so many years: Elliot Gould, Derek Jacobi and the late Martin Landau, to the newbies Zoe Lister-Jones and Zosia Mamet. The pizzazz (and brains!) of Hedy Lamarr and Billy Wilder. And always the vicissitudes of the heart, romance at all ages. Inexorable drive to drag secrets and traumas into the healing light — and laugh anyway.

Box office hits and award winners; The Wedding Plan, The Women’s Balcony, In Between, Keep the Change, Scaffolding and 1945. A particularly strong Australian focus includes My Mother’s Lost Children, Shalom Bollywood, The Last Goldfish and 2 local shorts financed by our JIFF Short Film Fund. The tradition of screening the cream of the new crop of Israeli films continues with over 30 Ophir (Israeli Oscar) award nominations amongst them. Our unique series of events from director Q&As to the kugel making competition. We begin it all with Menashe, the first commercial release Yiddish language film in over 50 years. The 1000 year old mameloshn is alive and well. Got tsu danken. Dive into the program. See you at the movies. JIFF and Chill. — Eddie Tamir, Artistic Director

A mother tells her daughter the tale of madness born from the Holocaust.  Through the ghetto to cradling her dying sister, Eva Nagler left her mind on the beaches of the Baltic Sea during one of the largest death marches of the war. Being only one of two survivors out of 60,000, we see vignettes of her perspective — distorted, romantic and affected by the muffled memories. Narrated by her great-niece, the story captures a snapshot of the cold reality of war and its terrible lingering aftermath. AUS T R A L I A — 2 017, 8 M I N DI R EC TO R —

OPENING NIGHT FILM —

Menashe

FEATURE

“A touching father-son drama that finds universal emotion in an unlikely place.” — Indiewire “Brilliant new Yiddish mumblecore heartbreaker… an absolute must-see.” — Tablet Magazine “A gentle human comedy.” — The New York Times

12

Set within the New York Hasidic community in Borough Park, Brooklyn, Menashe follows a kind but hapless grocery store clerk trying to maintain custody of his son Rieven after his wife, Lea, passes away. Since they live in a tradition-bound culture that requires a mother present in every home, Rieven is supposed to be adopted by the boy’s strict, married uncle, but Menashe’s Rabbi decides to grant him one week to spend with Rieven prior to Lea’s memorial. Their time together creates an emotional moment of father/son bonding as well as offering Menashe a final chance to prove to his skeptical community that he can be a capable parent. Shot in secret entirely within the Hasidic community depicted in the film, and performed wholly in Yiddish, Menashe is a warm, life-affirming look at the universal bonds between father and son that also sheds light on a notoriously private community. An audience and critics darling that premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, the film is a strikingly authentic, gently comedic and deeply moving portrait of family, love, connection, and community.

FEATURE

Starring Kevin Spacey and Nicholas Hoult, The Rebel in the Rye is an immersive chronicle of one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers, J.D. Salinger. Spanning 15 seminal years of Salinger’s life — from his Jewish upbringing and enrolment in a Columbia writing class with Whit Burnett (Spacey), to his phenomenal success with iconic novel, The Catcher in the Rye — this handsome biopic presents a surprising and comprehensive account of the notoriously reclusive and unconventional author. Premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

FEATURE

1945

“One of the most stunningly beautiful movies you’ll see all year.” —Miami Herald “...gripping period drama offers a fresh, intelligent cinematic approach.” —Variety “...a powerful and beautifully made film.” —Indiewire Two men in black hats disembark from a train under a foreboding sky, setting a small town into a panic. The scene could be from a Western, except that the town is in Hungary and the black-clad men are Orthodox Jews, not gun-slinging drifters. As they walk silently behind a horse-drawn cart carrying two crates to an unknown destination, their presence elicits a spate of rumours. Adapting the short story Homecoming by Gábor T. Szántó, awardwinning Hungarian director Ferenc Török stunningly captures a transitional moment in European history with one village’s actions reflecting the moral corrosion of an entire continent. Beautifully shot in black and white with a spare, melancholy score, this understated film quietly builds and ultimately packs an unexpected punch. Premiered at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival. Director Ferenc Török is a guest of the festival.

Across the Waters

“Will touch even the most cynical viewers.”—Atlanta Jewish Times In a gripping story of survival and rescue, a Jewish musician and his family make a frantic escape from Nazi-occupied Denmark. Enjoying the nightlife of 1943 Copenhagen, jazz guitarist Arne is seemingly immune to the hardships of war, as the Danish government opts for a compliant relationship with Nazi Germany. When his terrified wife Miriam hears rumours of the round-up and deportation of Danish Jews, he is initially skeptical, but an overnight raid forces the couple to flee their home with five-year-old son, Jakob. Amidst lurking danger from the Gestapo and their collaborators, the family puts its fate in the hands of strangers whose allegiance and motives are not always clear. MELB (CLASSIC CINEMAS) —

He is furious and voices his immediate consternation to his wife Sara (played by queen of Israeli cinema, Gila Almagor), and their three sons: army officer, Itzik; depressed and divorced literature professor, Leon; and DJ/small time weed dealer, Efi. Fixated on the idea that toxic waste spewing from the antenna is causing strange pains and disrupting his sleep, Joshua starts to lose his grip on reality. An entertaining saga of love, family and pesky neighbours.

“An honest, intelligent, and hilarious perspective on modern relationships.” — Sundance Institute Anna and Ben are a pair of 30-something Jewish artists who fight constantly. It doesn’t help that they’ve each come to a standstill in their careers, or that, together, they’ve suffered a heartbreak neither wants to face. But one day they come up with a brilliant idea they actually agree on: why not start a band and use their arguments as songwriting inspiration? Debut feature director Zoe Lister-Jones, who also writes and stars in Band Aid, offers a funny, unexpected, and poignant perspective on modern relationships. Also starring Adam Pally (The Mindy Project) and Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Band Aid premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

Ben-Gurion, Epilogue

A six-hour interview with David Ben-Gurion, one of modern history’s greatest leaders, emerges from the obscurity of an archive where it has lain unrecognised for decades. It is 1968, and Ben-Gurion is 82 years old. He lives in the seclusion of his home in the desert, remote from all political discourse, which allows him a perspective on the Zionist enterprise. His introspective soul-searching is the focus of this film, and his reflections provide a surprising vision for today’s crucial decisions and for the future of Israel. Nominated for Best Documentary at the 2017 Ophir Awards (Israeli Oscars). Director Yariv Mozer is a guest of the festival, with thanks to Plus 61J.

Body and Soul: An American Bridge

The Great American Songbook is replete with standards from Jewish composers, inducted into the jazz canon by black musicians. Perhaps none has been as enduring as the 1930s tune Body and Soul, composed by Jewish songwriter Johnny Green, introduced on Broadway by Jewish torch singer Libby Holman, and first recorded as a jazz piece by Louis Armstrong. Filmmaker Robert Philipson explores the timelessness of the piece, and its role at the very heart of both black American and Jewish music. Combining expert interviews with rare archival footage and brilliant performances, Body and Soul: An American Bridge pays tribute to the enduring power of music to break down barriers and unite disparate peoples.

Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story “A thoroughly engaging, eye-opening showbiz doc.” — The Hollywood Reporter Truth is stranger than fiction in the extraordinary story of Hedy Lamarr, the Hollywood screen siren who invented 1940s wireless technology. Known for her striking looks and electric on-screen persona, Lamarr’s legion of fans never knew she possessed such a beautiful mind. An Austrian Jewish émigré who acted by day and drew mechanical and electronic inventions by night, Lamarr came up with a ‘secret communication system’ to help the Allies to beat the Nazis. Weaving in Lamarr’s own voice from archival recordings, this absorbing documentary reveals how Lamarr gave her patent to the Navy, received no credit for her contributions, and wound up impoverished in her latter years. Executive produced by Susan Sarandon and narrated by Diane Kruger, Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story is a film for lovers of history, Hollywood and science. “...touches chords that are both poignant, funny and bitter.” — ScreenDaily Frankfurt, 1946. David Bermann (Moritz Bleibtreu) and his Jewish friends have escaped the Nazi regime and are now dreaming of leaving for America. But how will they get the money in these tough post-war times? The smooth-talking businessman focuses on what the Germans now need most: fine bed linens nicely wrapped in amusing stories! The six talented entertainers go from home to home, praising housewives with ashy chutzpah until the flattered ladies have no choice but to buy their irresistible items. Business flourishes and a bright new future can be seen in the horizon. But questions about Bermann’s past catch up with him. Why does he have two passports? What about his visit to Hitler’s mountain retreat? Could he have collaborated with the Nazis? The smart and tenacious US officer Sara Simon refuses to close the interrogation, determined to get to the heart of Bermann’s wartime memories. Sara matches his quick wit with iron severity, but it becomes increasingly difficult for her to escape his winsome charm. Addressing the complexities of Jews struggling to reassimilate in their own homeland, Bye Bye Germany presents a unique and bittersweet story with a telling contemporary relevance.

Whisked away in an ambulance, he is forced to watch helplessly as his family is arrested by French police. Maurice is committed to a long-term-treatment facility and as the war intensifies, the sympathetic chief physician (César-winner Philippe Torreton) and his hospital staff must resort to drastic measures to keep the Jewish patients safe from Nazi patrols. Based on American author Nicole Krauss’ bestseller, The History of Love is a sprawling saga of undaunted ardour and merciless twists of fate. Spanning decades and continents, the film’s central narrative begins in pre-war Poland and follows Leo Gurski and Alma Mereminski, neighbours and sweethearts whose romance is thwarted by the rise of fascism. Before the war Alma is sent to America — after the war Leo tries to find her, oblivious to the surprises that await him. Aided by a brilliant cast that includes Gemma Arterton (Their Finest) and veteran actors Derek Jacobi and Elliott Gould, director Radu Mihăileanu (Live and Become) deftly weaves the many threads of Krauss’ novel into a soaring and deeply moving epic that touches on the duties of religion, literature and love.

An Israeli Love Story

(HADREI HABAIT)

(SIPUR AHAVA ERETZ-ISRAELI)

“A movie about an Israeliness that dreams, aspires, insists, confronts, struggles and comes to the point of defeat, and it is Green’s best, most complex, complete and touching work to date. This is a version of Israeliness we have yet to see on the screen, tender and full of longing despite its hardships.” — Haaretz Avraham is a small time contractor who is trying to make it big. His family lives in the shadow of his career ambitions as he gambles on projects that exceed his capacities, until one of these projects leaves him drowning in debts that he cannot repay. Under the threat of their father’s financial difficulties, a family rediscovers the strength of its ties. MELB (CLASSIC CINEMAS) —

A Jew for Example (UN JUIF POUR L’EXEMPLE)

The writer Jacques Chessex was an eight-year-old boy in 1942 in the Swiss village of Payerne when he witnessed events, as detailed in his controversial novella, A Jew Must Die, that would change him forever. Popular myth has it that Switzerland remained an innocent island amidst the horrors of WWII. What we see in Jacques Berger’s decisive film — and what Chessex saw as a boy — repudiates this. In Payerne, a cadre of Nazi sympathisers singled out a Jewish scapegoat, a wealthy livestock dealer, to serve as an ‘example’ in honour of Hitler’s birthday. More than a simple recreation of a historical atrocity, this powerful film boldly conflates past and present, suggesting that the two are, and always will be, dangerously intertwined.

Keep the Change

“An ode to self-discovery and acceptance that’s as funny as it is sweet.” — Variety Winner of Best Narrative Feature at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, Keep the Change follows David, an upper-class charmer who leads a very comfortable life until he is mandated to attend a support group at the Manhattan Jewish Community Centre. There, he is forced to come to terms with his own highfunctioning autism, despite his resentment towards being singled out as different, or anything other than what he interprets as ‘normal.’ In group, David is paired with Sarah — a quirky and outgoing woman whose optimism initially irks David. Despite their contrasting personalities, they forge a bond. As their relationship deepens, Sarah, confident in herself and her individuality, challenges David to embrace his own idiosyncrasy. A unique and endearing romantic comedy about people navigating the difficulties of a relationship, Keep the Change details an under-represented community with authenticity, optimism and charming humour. A huge box-office hit in Israel, this laugh-outloud army-buddy movie combines absurd comedy, romance and music to create a film as hot as the Negev. Shlomi, Assaf and Kobi are Israeli reserve soldiers, and members of a military rock band. After getting left behind enemy lines in Hezbollah territory, the three bumbling soldiers embark on a treacherous journey that demands banding together and setting aside their own complicated history to make it home. Set against the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000, the action — and bullets — fly fast and furious.

As a child growing up in Trinidad, Su didn’t realise she was white. As an adult, she finds a new family in Sydney’s queer community, learns she is Jewish and that she has halfsiblings on the other side of the world. Told through a personal archive stretching across a century, this search for one lost family echoes through all those touched by forced migration. An audience favourite at the Sydney Film Festival, The Last Goldfish presents a journey through memory and amnesia, revealing what we gain from understanding who we are and where we come from.

Curious George is an international icon, with generations of children growing up with stories of his adventures and hijinks. The friendly and inquisitive monkey was created by Hans and Margret Rey; German Jews with their own incredible stories. A dreamer, Hans was always sketching whatever came to his mind. Margret was an entrepreneurial rebel, determined to make her mark on the world. The two married in Brazil and honeymooned in Paris. Four years later, when the Nazis encroached on the edges of the city, they fled on bicycles with a precious manuscript featuring a small monkey and his beloved friend, the Man in the Yellow Hat. Seamlessly incorporating animation that brings Hans and Margret to life, Ema Ryan Yamazaki’s debut documentary charts the creation and journey of Curious George, and celebrates the Reys’ extraordinary creative collaboration amidst the chaos of a world at war.

Pinning the blame on Leopold Hilsner, a young Jewish beggar, his trial and subsequent death sentence incite riots against Jews. Russian Jews: Part Two —1918 - 1948 captures a 30-year period of influential Jewish participation in every domain of Soviet political and cultural life. Significant events include Leon Trotsky’s role as the founder of the Red Army; artist Marc Chagall’s early career; the first Soviet popular music stars; writers, with Isaac Babel in the lead, and other figures and fates, without which the grandiose Soviet ‘project’ is impossible to understand. “A small film with a big heart… a sharply drawn study of the father-son dynamic.” — Screendaily 17-year-old Asher has always been an impulsive troublemaker. It’s hard for him to concentrate in class, and he lashes out in rage and violence yet he is also endowed with a considerable amount of charm and street wisdom. While his strict father sees him as a natural successor to the family’s scaffolding business, Asher finds a different masculine role model in his gentle literature teacher, Rami, and forges a special connection with him. Torn between the two worlds, Asher looks for a chance at a new life and new identity. When a sudden tragedy occurs, he’s forced to undertake the ultimate test of maturity. Premiering at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival (ACID showcase), Scaffolding won Best Israeli Feature Film and Best Actor at the 2017 Jerusalem Film Festival, and was nominated for eight 2017 Ophir Awards (Israeli Oscars), including Best Picture and Best Director.

In 1937, Emanuel is diagnosed with bone tuberculosis and is confined to Carmen Sylva, a marine sanatorium near the Black Sea. Emanuel is soon encased in a heavy body cast, and must spend all of his hours confined to his bed. A highly intelligent young man in his early twenties with a penchant for quoting poetry and philosophy, Emanuel tries to live life to its fullest in this Magic Mountainlike setting – keeping up his good humour, arguing over politics with anti-Semites and falling in love. But is it only a matter of time until he, like many of his fellow patients, becomes resigned to his fate? Based on the autobiographical writings of Jewish Romanian author, Max Blecher, Radu Jude’s (Aferim!) eerily gorgeous Scarred Hearts premiered at the 2016 Locarno Film Festival. DOCUMENTARY

Shalom Bollywood: The Untold Story of Indian Cinema A celebration of the all-singing, all-dancing history of the world’s largest film industry, Shalom Bollywood reveals the unlikely story of the 2000 year old Indian Jewish community and its formative place in shaping the world’s largest film industry. At the advent of the Indian Cinema industry, it was taboo for Hindu and Islamic women to perform on-screen. Indian Jewish women took upon the female lead roles, and continued to do so for decades. Using stage names, the women weren’t obviously identified as Jewish, and were commonly thought to be Christian or Muslim. With access to rare archival footage, Danny Ben-Moshe’s (My Mother’s Lost Children, pg. 44) new documentary tells its extraordinary tale through the lives of Indian Cinema’s Jewish icons at the heart of Bollywood from the turn of the 20th century to the present day. Director, Danny Ben-Moshe, is a guest of the festival.

As a young man, Tadeusz left behind his sweetheart and his entire family to fight for the Republican Army in the Spanish Civil War. After the war was lost, the rise of fascism made it unsafe for a Jewish communist to return to Europe, and Tadeusz was forced to immigrate to Buenos Aires, literally going underground to help build the subway tunnels beneath the city. Refusing the doctor’s pills he believes responsible for robbing his lucidity and manhood, Tadeusz’s past begins to meld with the present. Knowing that his next journey will likely be his last, Tadeusz sets about reconnecting with long-lost lovers from his youth, with help from an eccentric circle of caring friends and neighbours. A sharply observed character study depicting a quixotic life that comes full circle in its final, bittersweet chapter.

DOCUMENTARY

In this personal documentary, a daughter uncovers the controversial choices that her father made in order to survive the Holocaust. A Jewish caricaturist and mime from Poland, Eddie Vitch spent the years before the war living and working in Hollywood, creating sketches of stars that became a part of Hollywood lore. Deported back to Europe in the 1930s, Vitch was performing in Paris when France was invaded by the Germans. Spotted on stage by Nazi officers, he was sent to Germany to perform for Nazi elite and the Gestapo in Germany’s most prestigious theatres, remaining there for the duration of the war. With his documents identifying him as “Levkovitch,” a recognisably Jewish name, was Vitch hiding in plain sight or did the Nazis protect him? As the mysterious life of Eddie Vitch is revealed, it becomes clear that what happened decades ago still lingers.

The Women’s Balcony (YISMACH HATANI)

When the women’s balcony in an Orthodox synagogue collapses, the congregation falls into crisis. The rabbi’s wife is severely injured, and Rabbi Menashe, already in poor health, can’t cope with the disaster. Lacking a place of worship as well as the services of an ordained religious leader, the men of the congregation are thrilled when the charismatic, ultra-orthodox seminarian Rabbi David steps in. With Rabbi Menashe out of commission, Rabbi David is soon supervising the repairs to their beloved synagogue. The charismatic young Rabbi appears to be a saviour after the accident, but he slowly starts pushing his fundamentalist ways and tries to take control. This tests the women’s friendships and creates a rift between the community’s women and men, sparking a showdown. An Israeli box-office hit and a New York Times Critic’s pick, The Women’s Balcony is a rousing and good-hearted film about can-do women speaking truth to patriarchal power.
