FROM ANY OF THE CHURCH ENTRANCES AT ST. MARY. Thank you for your prayers and support. ROE v WADE: “Over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decision of Roe v. Wade.” The culture of death wages a silent war against the culture of life. In the balance hang not only the lives of millions of unborn children, but the future of the family. St. John Paul II affirmed “the family is placed at the center of the great struggle between good and evil, between life and death, between love and all that is opposed to love. However we have a great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help and as a people of faith, we believe our prayers are heard.” So remember to pray for respect for all life. There is a Nine Days for Life Novena from January 16-24 at www.9daysforlife.com (from usccb.org)

Lily’s Column with Fr. Dave:

WORD OF LIFE: “[Jesus] showed us the self-sacrificial nature

True generosity requires more of us than kindly impulse. Above all it requires imagination: the capacity to see people in all their perplexities and needs, and to know how to expend ourselves effectively for them. IAR Wylie

Stewardship: A Way of Life Baptism of the Lord “John answered them all, ‘I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming … he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit…’” Luke 3:16 The Catholic Catechism states that “Jesus’ immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God’s will.” In other words, as baptized Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus—the gift of ourselves. Once we surrender ourselves to God, we will know in our hearts what God calls us to do.

Cottage Grove. The movement focuses on the moral and religious renewal of the world. Its national headquarters are in Waukesha, where I visited one of these replica shrines a couple of summers ago.

It is good to be familiar with those in consecrated life in our area. Cistercian Nuns bake and sell altar breads at Valley of Our Lady Monastery in the Prairie du Sac countryside. The Society of Jesus Christ the Priest oversees several parishes. Women from the Diocese of Madison have entered religious life for the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, the Sisters of Charity, the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecelia, the Trappistines, and the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. We will look at another that operates directly in our diocese. The Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary are an Association of the Faithful founded in 1912 by Fr. Josef Kentenich (1885-1968), a young Pallotine priest who was given the pastoral care of a student house at Schoenstatt, near Koblenz, Germany. At the chapel there he invited the students to entrust their lives to Mary and the Blessed Trinity through a covenant of love. There are 180 replicas of this chapel in the world today, dedicated to the "Mater ter admirabilis" (Mother Thrice Admirable). One of these is located on the east side of Madison going toward

LAST WEEK IN ELEMENTARY STATIONS… Explore Being Catholic: Genesis contains the Creation stories. God had covenants with Adam and Eve (One Holy Couple), Noah’s family (One Holy Family), Abraham (One Holy Tribe) and Moses (One Holy Nation). Time with God: How can we be become better Christians this year? Children received bottles of holy water to bless themselves before leaving their homes reminding them to “be Jesus” to others. Faith-Filled People: St. Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was the first American born saint! St. Anthony the Abbot was a hermit and ate just bread and water. He gave special guidance to those in need. Sharing God’s Story: John the Baptist knew his cousin Jesus was going to do great things. He told others to follow Jesus. THIS WEEKEND... Family Ministry: All Love Bears Fruit In the Church, all are called to the vocation to love. By loving one another, seeds of love are sown throughout the world so that love can bear fruit. In the message of the Gospel, Christ has chosen each of us to bear fruit by staying close to him and then bringing his love to others. (Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive)

7th grade: In the bible timeline, youth will be learning about the era of the Royal Kingdom - Divided Kingdom. 8th grade: The Theology of the Body lesson will focus on Sex, Love and Chastity. Youth will also prepare for the ACRE testing held during class time in March. Freshman: Who is Jesus? Jesus claimed to be God and rose from the dead to prove it, something no other founder of a world religion has ever done. He was not a liar and not a lunatic...but Lord. (Chosen) Sophomore: Are you talking to me? God has made us for a relationship with him and longs to share his life with each one of us. Prayer is the communication with him that sustains and deepens that relationship (Chosen). Sophomores will take the ACRE test during class in March. Junior: Why wait? When he made men and women, God was revealing to the world a glimpse of the love shared within the Blessed Trinity. In our bodies we reflect that love to the extent that we give of ourselves for the good of others and use our gifts and abilities to serve others out of love for God. (Chosen)

promises and resist temptations will want to adopt the means for doing so: selfknowledge, practice of an ascesis (selfdisciple) adapted to the situations that confront him, obedience to God's commandments, exercise of the moral virtues, and fidelity to prayer. “ (2340)

“We should celebrate the day of our Baptism as we do our birthday!” (Pope John Paul II) The future saint said these words on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in 1997. It certainly makes sense to do so since baptism marks the birth day of our life in the Lord: “Baptism makes us members of the Body of Christ,” states the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and “incorporates us into the Church.” (1267) Just like the water cascaded over your head, graces poured down at that very moment during the Sacrament of Baptism and infused your soul with the three theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity which can not be obtained by human effort. You were also given the four moral virtues, which traditionally have also been called the cardinal virtues: justice, temperance, prudence, and fortitude. At the same time you received the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The trick is to make use of these gifts continually throughout your life. The Catechism gives us a guide. “Whoever wants to remain faithful to his baptismal

That is why celebrating the anniversary of your baptism is such a great idea. It is a reminder of the Holy Spirit dwelling in you and working through you and that we are all called to pursue a life of holiness. Every Easter, we publicly renew our baptismal promises at Mass. The Church has us given an opportunity to gain a plenary indulgence (an awesome topic for another day, but for now let’s just say you’re going to want these) if we renew the baptismal promises on our anniversary of baptism. A formula for doing that can be found in the Handbook of Indulgences. Another idea would be to attend Mass or make a Holy Hour in the church of your baptism, To commemorate the occasion with children, a “Blessing on the Anniversary of Baptism” can be found in the book Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers. Dig out their baptism candle and light it. Show them the baptismal font in the church where it happened. The Christmas season ends with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in the Jordan River by John the Baptist and the liturgical calendar turns to Ordinary Time. Use this occasion to recall your own baptismal birthday.

Liturgy Commission The Liturgy Commission at St. Mary is responsible for all liturgical celebrations in the parish. It functions with several committees:  Music Selection Committee choses the music to be sung at each weekend mass.  The Environment Committee plans and carries out the decoration of the church for each liturgical season.  The Reading/Reflection Committee reads and reflects on the readings for each liturgical season, and surfaces a focus for each season. These reflections are used by the Music Selection Committee in the selection of the songs, and by the Environment Committee in planning the environment for each season. This commission also addresses any issues raised by parish members concerning liturgical practices.

Meetings Liturgy Commission meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Ark Meeting Room. The chair, recorder and prayer positions are rotated each month. Current Members: Julia Armstrong, Bob Berger, Pat Starr. Anyone interested in joining this Commission is encouraged to call St. Mary parish office.
