JOURNAL CLUB RESOURCES BJOG carefully identifies papers that are suitable for journal club discussion. Each journal club paper is accompanied by: ○ a set of questions or discussion points, to critically appraise the paper ○ slide sets prepared by the author to summarise the main findings. The questions should stimulate discussion on: ○ study design ○ analysis and interpretation of the results ○ whether clinical practice in your local hospital setting should be modified in light of the overall evidence base.

Although the papers are aimed at journal club use, the critical review frameworks may also be helpful for health care professionals preparing for oral structured clinical examinations (OSCE), oral assessments or other academic exercises. Visit our journal club webpage for a list of all our journal club papers. Recent examples include: Glazener CMA, MacArthur C, Hagen S, Elders A, Lancashire R, Herbison GP, Wilson PD. Twelve-year follow-up of conservative management of postnatal urinary and faecal incontinence and prolapse outcomes: randomised controlled trial. BJOG 2014;121:112–120. Moran C, Lee C. What’s normal? Influencing women’s perceptions of normal genitalia: an experiment involving exposure to modified and nonmodified images. BJOG 2013; DOI: 10.1111/1471-0528.12578.

#BlueJC BJOG’S SOCIAL MEDIA JOURNAL CLUB SEARCH #BlueJC

A typical #BlueJC structure is as follows:

BJOG encourages the use of social media for journal club discussions. By using the keyword #BlueJC a wide variety of O&G professionals can communicate via social media to participate in the discussion, critically appraise the paper and enhance research literacy.

○ A BJOG paper will be advertised as free to view via social media one week before the discussion is due to start

These journal clubs are arranged with assistance from BJOG’s journal club coordinator and generally begin on the last Wednesday of every month. They are facilitated by a ‘host’ who uses the discussion points to stimulate debate and encourage participation.

○ A concentrated discussion will take place for one hour, initiated by the journal club host ○ The discussion will continue for 7 days, allowing for participants in different time zones to take part ○ A summary of the discussion will be published in BJOG Exchange, the correspondence section of BJOG.

Everybody is welcome to join #BlueJC!

TWITTER

See the following Twitter tips: ○ Send a Tweet: Send concise information to followers as a 140 character Tweet. ‘Me’ will show all your Tweets and ‘Home’ will show the Tweets of those you follow. ○ Find peers: Users’ names are preceded by the @ sign. Users can be searched for and followed to view their Tweets. ○ Use the hashtag: The hashtag marks keywords and topics in a Tweet to categorise and allow Tweets to appear easily in searches. Clicking on a hash-tagged word shows Tweets using that hashtag, click ‘all’ to view all. ○ Search #BlueJC: the hashtag chosen to categorise journal club Tweets on BJOG papers is #BlueJC.
