Caribbean and Slavery For centuries, Caribbean colonies provided a lot of money to the European colonies they were ruled by. How did they provide this wealth? The Caribbean people were enslaved and forced to produce crops for European countries. One of the most popular crops the enslaved Caribbean people harvested was sugar! Sugarcane is a very laborious plant to raise and harvest. It was very popular and made lots of money for Europeans. Sadly, the affects of the Caribbean enslavement are still apparent today. Most of the islands struggle with poverty and lack of resources.
