continued their trip in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Here students were able to solo hike to the top of the continental divide where the spectacular view allowed for glimpses of the Caribbean Sea on the left, and the Pacific Ocean on the right. Freshman environmental science major, Audrey Cardwell said, “It was cool to do this hike alone because this was the midway point of the trip. You got to reflect on your experiences so far, but also look forward to what was coming next.” After the continental divide trip the class then toured an organic coffee farm and see how one of the country’s main exports is produced.

The bulk of the science on the trip was done in the latter half of the week in La Selva Organization of Tropical Studies. At this center for research, students ventured out multiple times a day on to the many trails that emanated from this outpost in the jungle. On these hikes students birdwatched, looked for howler monkeys, journaled, and collected data to learn more about this diverse ecosystem. After an impromptu rafting trip during the final day in Costa Rica, students returned to Brevard for classes in the early hours of Monday morning, exhausted but psyched from their week of adventuring and learning.

Students study in Costa Rica over Spring Break

By Alex Perri Staff Writer

Over spring break 15 Brevard College students traveled to Costa Rica for an ecology class, and the trip of a lifetime. From March 4 to March 12 the class traveled around the Central American country participating in a range of activities from bird watching in the jungle to soaking in geothermal hot springs at a resort. The ecology class was spearheaded by environmental science professor, Dr. Mo Drinkard, and was comprised of a handful of environmental science majors as well students from many other programs at BC. Dr. Mo’s father, and psychology professor, Dr. Caroline Mann also joined the trip. The trip started in Costa Rica’s capital, San Jose, where they explored the city by foot and soaked in the Tico culture at an art museum and local restaurant. On day two the class ventured away from the city center, to La Fortuna near Arenal Volcano National Park, to relax at Baldi Hot Springs Resort and Spa. After their day of relaxation, the group traveled into the mountains for a day spent at the Mistico Hanging Bridges, inside Arenal Volcano National Park. From this network of bridges students were able to traverse the tropical transition wet forest from many different altitudes, and at one point from the canopy. The following day, the students went from the canopy to the floor of the jungle when they

Staff Writer On Tuesday, Mar. 21, Brevard College held Plan Your Future Day. An event held once every semester where classes are canceled and students have the chance to figure out their path for the next semester or even what their path will be for the rest of their college career. During Plan Your Future Day there was also a Career & Grad Fair where there were many perspective businesses such as Aflac, Waffle House, and Lowes that the students can look into for future careers. There were also many other schools such as Lenoir Rhyne and UNC Ashville that are looking for students to enroll in graduate programs. Also around the same area as the Career & Grad Fair were booths set up for the graduating class of 2017. Some booths include setting up as alumni (with the optional alumni email), getting formal cap and gown pictures, paying off student loans, and ordering class rings. Plan Your Future Day is also the time for every student to meet with their advisors and for them to work on and get their schedules approved for registration for next semester and the students can also talk with advisors with a plan for declaring a major. The dates for registering for classes next semester are:

Seniors: Monday, Mar. 27 Juniors: Tuesday, Mar. 28 Sophomores: Wednesday, Mar. 29 Freshmen: Thursday, Mar. 30

Brevard College offers a variety of special topic classes that change semester to semester. For the 2017 fall semester, BC had two LINC classes and several special topics seminars. The two LINC classes are Art and Archaeology of Ancient Greece (ARH 323K) with the History of Ancient Greece (HIS 250K) and Quest Literature (ENG 220K) with Philosophy, Religion and Story through C.S. Lewis (REL 268K). Some of the special topics include Intimate Relationships (PSY 490), Underage Alcohol Purchases (CRJ 390) and Special Topics Seminar with adjunct psychiatrist, Dr. Baldwin from Hendersonville (CRJ 290). Looking at more detail for the Ancient Greece LINC class, Dr. Chapin and Dr. Bauslaugh will be combining the history and ancient artifacts of Greece to teach students of the birth of democracy, coinage, Greek literature, the life of Alexander the Great and more. Class is offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11:00 to 12:15. Dr. Holland and Dr. Bringle will be teaching the Quest literature and C.S. Lewis class on Tuesdays and Fridays from 12:30 to 3:15 with a break in between the classes. The class focuses on C.S. Lewis’s autobiography, his theology of pain and his beliefs in the Christian faith. The LINC also takes a journey through a wardrobe and to Venus and Mars. The class studies the stages of heroic journey. CRJ 290 is open to BC students, as well as state and county law officers on Mondays and Thursdays. The course will certify participants in Critical Incident Management. The CRJ 390 class is a Monday through Friday class that will focus on preventing underage alcohol purchases. Police Chief Harris will be co-teaching the class with Criminal Justice Professor, Dr. Powers. PSY 490 is “essentially a review of psychological research as it applies to relations with others,” said Psychology Instructor, Dr. Dan Moore. The class is offered on Tuesdays and

The American Health Care Act Trump’s health care plan

By Florian Peyssonneaux Staff Writer

Trump finally announced his new healthcare plan on Monday, March 6, and the general opinion already start to diverge. Even within the Republican party, the protest starts to rise because the new bill is not a replacement for ObamaCare. One top priority during Trump’s campaign was to repeal and replace ObamaCare, but “nobody knew that healthcare could be so complicated” said Trump. Well apparently the 45th president of the United States just discovered its complexity a couple days ago. The bill to replace Obamacare has been named the “American health care act” by the GOP. This is a very interesting name considering that Trump didn’t want to put his name on it like Obama did in the past says a lot about the responsibility of this bill. As soon as the American health care act was introduced on Monday, March 6 many Democrats and even some Republicans called it “dead on arrival”. The main medical associations in the country such as AMA, AHA, ANA, and AARP already opposed it. The irony of the situation is for Trump who promised to help the “forgotten people” so much, are most likely to lose their coverage. Indeed, under the American health care act 24 million people would lose their coverage. In Paul Ryan’s Powerpoint presentation about the American health care act he explained that “the problem with ObamaCare is that people who are healthy pay for the ones who are sick” said Ryan. The problem being that every insurance company follow the principle he just described. According to the congressional budget office the AHCA will increase the number of people without coverage to 24 million by 2026, even though it will be saving $337 billion to off federal deficits. In reality, Trump’s promise to provide affordable healthcare for everybody

is just another lie, and his plan doesn’t even improve what was already existing. The bill gets rid of insurance tax credit based on income, to change to a flat rate that relies on age. The older a person is, the more money he or she gets. Another absurd part of Trump’s healthcare plan is, as Sean Spicer indicated, that it is much smaller and simpler than ObamaCare, yet includes seven pages about lottery winners. So if you have won an important sum of money, your luck might be gone very soon. The least surprising part of the TrumpCare plan is that it actually helps wealthy people like the President himself. This new healthcare plan will ensure the wealthiest people will be able to have massive tax cuts if passed. This major bill is going to be crucial for Republicans results in the midterm election, that’s why Donald Trump wants it to be passed as a law. Trump is so desperate about this bill that he invited GOP lawmakers on Tuesday, March 8 to play bowling, and eat pizza in the White House to try to convince them. In a New York Times article from March. 10, the consequences of the AHCA are very well explained and show that many poor Americans who voted for Trump will be the ones losing the most. “The voters hit the hardest eligible for at least $5,000 less in tax credits under the Republican plan supported Mr. Trump by a margin of 59 percent to 36 percent” said New York Times writer Nate Cohn. In the event that the affordable healthcare act passes, Americans “have choices and they have to make a choice” according to U.S congressman Jason Chaffetz. Instead of buying the latest Iphone Chaffetz suggests that “American should invest in their own health care”. As a consequence, this bill will affect people throughout the nation. The American health care act is modifying many important parts of ObamaCare, but still doesn’t offer a solution to provide a health care program for America.

President Trump’s active communication on Twitter continues

By Asa Gray Staff writer

As another week goes by, we are once again presented with more interesting, tweets from President Donald Trump. He takes to his social media platforms, Twitter most frequently, as a quick way to let American citizens and people around the world know exactly what he is thinking and feeling. His rhetoric is nothing new but it is unpredictable to know how he will react next online. There is no doubt that the 45th President has been busy this past week. One of his biggest missions has been to repeal and replace Obamacare. The House Republicans recently unveiled this measure which looks to reconstruct the United States’ Medicaid program. This entails the federal government providing a certain amount of money to each state while also offering people the option of getting refundable tax credits. This would in turn, allow people to purchase the health insurance of their choice but that also means losing any that was included under the Affordable Care Act, which is worrying to many. While lots of controversy continues to surround this bill, President Trump feels very optimistic, tweeting on March 16, “Great progress on healthcare. Improvements being made - Republicans coming together!” Just 24 hours prior to this news, Trump had a hostile eruption on Twitter after a music video rapper Snoop Dogg was featured in went viral. In the music video entitled “Lavender (Nightfall Remix),” Snoop Dogg is shown firing a shot from a fake pistol toward Trump, who is depicted as a clown named “Ronald Klump.” President Trump is known to become defensive when something angers him or does not go his way. His response to the video was, “Can you imagine what the outcry would be if @ SnoopDogg, failing career and all, had aimed and fired at President Obama? Jail time!” This week, President Trump used his social media accounts to reassure Americans that he is See ‘Trump on Twitter’ page 6

‘Amy Schumer: The Leather Special’ Not really funny, but fun to watch By Jordon Morgan Staff writer

Ever since the 2015 hit film “Trainwreck,” Amy Schumer has gained a significant prominence in pop culture and it continues with her Netflix original comedy special, “Amy Schumer: The Leather Special.” Schumer’s vulgar, brash comedic style comes full force with this hour long special, and although only a few jokes make you laugh aloud, it never stops it from being a good time. Her comedic style allows a very relaxed, albeit very open and explicit about her sex life, stand-up routine that doesn’t feel off-color just for the sake of it. Schumer herself comes across as a woman who has absolutely no shame or self-consciousness in her appearance, preferences, or anything else that one might have that attitude about. This is very refreshing and empowering to see because whether you are a man or woman, see-

ing a major celebrity who doesn’t fit the typical Hollywood mold of “attractive” display open pride about themselves gives you a feeling of confidence in yourself as well. Even taking that aspect out of it, her vibrant energy makes you feel like you’re sort of having a casual (although one-sided of course) conversation with a friend. If that friend is open enough to tell you all about her sexual opinions and desires that is. With comedy of this particular style, it is a little tough to get used to. If you do decide to check it out, be prepared for just how forward Schumer is as she certainly doesn’t pull any punches and explains in detail about some nasty stories involving food poisoning and her sexual organs (sensing a pattern here?). That’s not to say it isn’t funny in certain parts. When she talks about the everyday feelings of women and men, during intercourse or otherwise, it works because it is so reflective of

how mainstream society sets these expectations while simultaneously tearing them down, giving the message that you should do what makes you happy, not what makes society happy. Comedy works when everyday relatable situations are on display, and this special is at its best when it takes advantage of those situations. Schumer flips the negative stereotypes and expectations placed on everyday people and with full pride gives them a middle finger. Overall, “The Leather Special” is exactly what one would expect out of a comedian like Amy Schumer, especially if you have seen or heard of the content of “Trainwreck.” Despite this, given its slightly shorter length compared to other specials and its relaxed atmosphere, it’s worth your attention. Plus, Schumer’s confidence lends this special a great air of selfesteem building, something we all may need in these troubling times.

vites him back to that shack for the weekend. I was skeptical going into this movie because I had already read the book it was based off on and wondered how they could turn this creative and heart-wrenching book into a movie. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and elated to see how well this adapted to the big screen. The look of the movie was stunning. The shack itself and the surrounding area was ultimately breath taking. Everything looked so beautiful and the music that accompanied this film tugged at all the appropriate heartstrings. The Holy Trinity’s interactions with Mack as he struggles with his great sadness was amazing to see. Throughout the movie, you get an overwhelming sense of love between the three and their love encircles Mack and helps him overcome his struggles. God (Octavia Spencer), otherwise known as “Papa” was all-knowing, loving, patient, and yet firm. Jesus (Avraham Aviv Alush) was bright, down to earth, loving, while Sarayu (Sumire Matsubara) was calm, mystifying, and

gentle. Each part of the trinity seemed unique and yet they all seemed to work together so well as if they were one. The film makes you experience a roller coaster of emotions from beginning until the very end. You feel the panic and worry when Missy is captured and understand Mack’s rage and sadness at certain points, then once he arrives at the Shack you feel his resentment but also you feel the love and the wish for his relationship with God to rekindle. I had little to no complaints with this movie. The only feasible complaint I could have is some of the CGI looked a little iffy at times. Other than that, this movie was great. This movie was enjoyable from start to finish. Even if you are not religious or are of another faith I still think this would be an enjoyable movie to go to. The actors work so well together and created a truly wonderful experience. If you go see this movie or watch it at home make sure to have tissues with you and be ready for a wonderful journey.

A tale of loss, sadness, and love, ‘The Shack’ review By Alexis Henley Staff Writer

‘The Shack’

“The Shack” is a heart wrenching tale of a man who is dealing with grief after the loss of his daughter and one day receives a mysterious note from God. The movie fills you with sadness, sympathy, and most importantly, love. Mackenzie Allen Phillips’s (Sam Worthington) life is muddled by what he calls his “Great Sadness” after his youngest daughter, Missy, is abducted and murdered in an abandoned shack in the Oregon wilderness. However, four years later Mack receives a note from God who in-

‘Logan’ A perfect end to a 17-year run By Jordon Morgan Staff writer

In the span of the X-Men film franchise’s 17-year history, whether the films have been beloved or despised, there has always been one constant in Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine, which reaches its final, brutal, emotional climax in director James Mangold’s “Logan.” By the year 2029, mutants have become practically extinct, with no new mutants being born in over 25 years. Logan (Jackman) formerly known as Wolverine, is dying due to adamantium poisoning combined with his healing ability fading, so he spends his days as a chauffeur in Texas. Along with the mutant tracker Caliban (Stephen Merchant), Logan looks after Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), who is suffering from a neurodegenerative disease causing him to lose control of his telepathic abilities to devastating effects. Approached by a woman to escort a young girl named Laura (Dafne Keen) to North Dakota, in the hopes of conveying her to a place known as Eden where she will be safe. However, Logan and company must contend with cybernetically-enhanced Donald Pierce and his band of Reavers trying to recapture Laura for a company called Transigen’s dubious experiments. From the very beginning, “Logan” sets itself up as a world of desperation and near hopelessness but the moment Laura shows up, there is a sense that a turnaround is ahead, that perhaps all the misery will end. Keen’s performance as Laura is a subtle but powerful one, she barely speaks, and yet she simultaneously brings across an unbridled rage with child-like innocence in a way that instantly draws you in. Her relationship with Logan and Xavier is the foundation of the entire film’s story and it works marvelously. Slowly but surely you see Logan’s external shell break down the more he interacts with this young girl who, as it turns out, is his biological daughter. This is

also what the film does to you the viewer, it breaks you down. Seeing iconic figures such as these in such a vulnerable state is a humbling experience, these all-powerful heroes to the world are in a state of despair, they are holding on by a thread and at the end of the day, are willing to risk all for this young girl. That’s where the overall genius of this film lies. Of course, while the performances are topnotch, Jackman especially, the action is superb, and the story very well-paced, the emotional resonance that this film connects with is unparalleled in the comic book film genre. This is all aided by the fact that this film more than earns its “R” rating with its savagely violent action scenes that show off what would really happen if Wolverine decided to gut you like a fish. At the same time, though, the action scenes never get over the top with their violence, providing a perfect balance between violent and restrained and allowing the viewer to be fully invested.

The only minor negative in this film is that some characters, a pair of certain villains who only gets proper introductions about half way through, come and go so quickly that you feel as though there should’ve been far more time spent with them. Otherwise, they just seem like wasted opportunities. Veering off this tangent into the point made earlier, the genius of this film is how emotional this film makes you. Comic book films can certainly hit you, but this is by far the biggest hit that a film of this genre has ever gotten to. A character so beloved as Logan, who Jackman has so perfectly embodied over the course of his nine performances as the titular character, deserved the best sendoff possible, and this film knocks it out of the park. Simply put, “Logan” is superb with fantastic pacing, great action scenes and acting performances, and a perfect ending deserving of the Wolverine. If you are a fan of X-Men in the slightest, this is a must see.

By Alex Perri

Staff Writer Are you ready to stand up for social justice? An upcoming conference at Brevard College’s Porter Center for Performing Arts might be just the place for you to do so. The Hymns & Hip Hop conference is free of charge and will take place Saturday, April 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The conference was created by members of Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was a copastor with his father, Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr., in response to police shootings and to help heal and prevent this type of violence. The traveling event “is a collective that utilizes the resistance traditions of the Black Church and Hip Hop to dismantle oppressive systems of injustice,” according to the Hymns & Hip Hop Facebook page. Brevard College organizers invite the community to come together to advocate for social justice through this unique and experiential workshop. Conference leaders say the event will “address issues of race, poverty and oppression as an explanation for the violence against black bodies with sessions like, ‘Bible, Beats, and Bars,’ ‘Trap or Die: The Economy of Poverty,’ and ‘#16BarsForJustice.” Throughout the day, the group will define how faith and hiphop can be instruments of resistance alongside civic engagement. Church leaders and representatives from Hymns & Hip Hop will be on hand to discuss social justice issues in the morning, followed by writing workshops and hip-hop performances in the afternoon. “Brevard College is hosting this workshop in order to build bridges between the community and students about racial issues,” said Associate Professor of History and one of the conference organizers, Margaret Brown.

The idea for bringing the event to BC was sparked after a group of students from the College’s Institute for Women in Leadership program spontaneously ended up at the Ebenezer Baptist Church during a service trip in Atlanta, Georgia, in September 2016. “I was extremely impressed with the Hymns & Hip Hop conference. Not only with the program and topics that were discussed, but also by how the IWIL women responded and participated,” said Gabrielle Mellendorf, cochair of IWIL. “By the end of a long day, we had heard from a Puerto Rican-American who was threatened at the age of 14, a lawyer who talked about criminal injustice and learned how hip hop is not only a beat but also reflected through art and poetry.” After experiencing the powerful voices of conference attendees in Atlanta, the IWIL women felt that the same kind of event was needed at Brevard to bring our own community members together to be heard. The conference will also be a great opportunity for those with an interest in hip-hop music to explore their interest creatively with writing workshops and the performance part of the day. Attendees will collaborate with their peers while working with professionals in the hip-hop industry. “I believe Hymns & Hip Hop will use two phenomenal genres of music to expose our community to some of the most profound expressions of the human experience," said Sharad Creasman, Brevard College campus minister and faculty adviser for the recently reinstated Black Student Union. To register for the conference, visit https:// hymnsandhiphopbc.eventbrite.com. Or visit the Hymns & Hip Hop Facebook page: https:// www.facebook.com/hymnshiphop.

He did not forget to call out any “fake news” that had arisen in the past week either. Trump also decided to honor former President Andrew Jackson as well as Rosie the Riveter during his Weekly Address on March 18, saying, “If Americans unite and find again within our nation the soul of Rosie and the spirit of Jackson—I have no doubt that we can do it, and do it like never before.”

BC Baseball Mens Tennis fall to Lenoirfall to Pioneers Rhyne in SAC matchup despite offensive outburst By Bryant Baucom Staff Writer

By Bryant Baucom Staff Writer

A 13 hit outburst from the Tornados offense was not enough as the Brevard College Tornados (8-19, 2-7 SAC) dropped a South Atlantic Conference match up the Tusculum Pioneers (16-8, 9-3 SAC) by the final of 17-4. The Brevard offense mashed out 13 hits as senior Brayden Morris went an impressive 4-for-4 from the plate with an RBI on the afternoon. Josh Hall and Brian Kahn both tallied two hits of their own while five different Tornados recorded one hit apiece. The Tornados trailed just 5-1 heading into the top of the seventh before the Pioneers drove home 12 runs in the final frame. Tusculum used nine hits and a Brevard error to put the game out of reach. After Tyler Konzen held the Pioneers scoreless in the first inning, Tusculum got on the board first in the second inning as a sacrifice fly from Dante Key brought home Nick Lacina. Brevard would score their first run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning as Josh Hall drove home Parker Hubbard to cut into the deficit. This came after Tusculum added on two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to add to their lead. In the bottom half of the seventh, the Tornados used four hits to add on three runs. Schuyler Martire brought home the first run of the inning as he singled to right field. A sacrifice fly from Blaine Durham drove in the second run of the inning as Joe Nelms scampered home for the Tornados. Brevard finished off the scoring for the contest when Brayden Morris singled up the middle to bring home Hall. Senior Tyler Konzen started the game on the mound for the Tornados as he went six innings of work while allowing nine runs on seven hits. Tyler Timms impressed out of the bullpen as he struck out two batters and allowed zero earned runs. The Tornados will return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 22 when they travel to the Peach State to take on Emmanuel with first pitch scheduled for 6:00pm.

After winning two out of their last four matches, the Brevard College Tornados (4-12, 0-6 SAC) dropped a South Atlantic Conference matchup 9-0 to the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (8-7, 2-4 SAC) on Sunday afternoon. Brevard fought hard in doubles action as Tom Mittring and JR Davis dropped the No. 1 double matchup 8-5. In the No. 2 doubles contest, Cre Still and Will Christiansen fell in a valiant effort 8-4. The Bears took a 3-0 lead into singles action after Tim Hengst and Christoph Plasa fell 8-0

in the final doubles matchup. Hengst fell 6-1 and 6-0 in singles action at No. 4 while Christiansen was defeated 6-1 and 6-1. The two L-R victories gave them a 5-0 advantage and secured the victory. Plasa was defeated at No. 6 singles by the scores of 6-3 and 6-0 while Davis dropped the No. 3 singles 6-2 and 6-1. Still fought in the No. 1 singles before falling 6-4 and 6-1. Mittring delivered the best performance on the afternoon for the Tornados as he narrowly fell in No. 2 singles by the finals of 6-4 and 7-5. The Tornados will return to action on Saturday, March 26 at 1:00pm as they travel to Mars Hill before hosting Anderson on Sunday.

Mens Lacrosse drop SAC contest to nationally ranked Queens By Bryant Baucom Staff Writer

In the first game under the lights on the new turf field for the Brevard College Tornados (27, 0-4 SAC), they came up short as they fell to the No. 18 Queens Royals (5-2, 3-0 SAC) by the final of 14-4. Kyle Hunziker and Jackson McKaig led the Tornados offense for the second straight contest as the pair tallied three of the four goals for Brevard. Ryan Taylor finished up the scoring for Brevard as he added in the remaining goal for the Tornados. McKaig recorded a game-high nine shots and tallied an assist in the contest. The nationally ranked Royals were led by Justin Swick who recorded a game-high six goals while three other Royals scored two goals apiece. Queens would outshoot the Tornados 47-22 in what proved to be the deciding factor in the contest. The Tornados finished the contest 15-23 on clear attempts and narrowing losing the ground ball advantage 44-54. The No. 18 team in the country jumped on

early as they scored three consecutive goals to take a 3-0 lead before Ryan Taylor got the Tornados on the board with his 11th goal of the season. Sensing the momentum shifting, the Royals responded with a 4-0 run to bring their lead six with under 10 minutes remaining in the half. Jackson McKaig cut the Royals lead to seven later in the half when he notched his team-high 18th goal of the season for Brevard. Queens took a 10-2 lead into halftime before scoring four second half goals. The Tornados defense came up strong in the second half as they held the Royals in check. Kyle Hunziker posted a strong second half as he recorded the final two goals for Brevard, bringing the game to its final score of 14-4. Chris Stallings impressed in goal as he recorded 14 saves against the nationally ranked Royals. The Tornados will return to action on Saturday, March 25 when they face off against future USA South opponent Huntingdon with faceoff at 8:00pm.
