Hello from Sydney Welcome! This term’s vibrant course guide shows the finger prints of some of the nearly 2,000 students, tutors, staff and visitors who ‘make their mark’ on The Conservatoire every week. Behind those finger prints are generations of people before them, many of whom have told me stories of how the Conservatoire has made its mark on them. A 70 year old woman bringing in her sister’s old music medal from the 1940’s, a young Jools Holland getting in trouble for banging his foot too loudly while playing piano in the practice rooms, and also the over 1,000 young people who received bursaries, scholarships and social outreach programmes from us last year. If you aren’t already one of the people who make their mark on The Conservatoire weekly, we hope that this will be the year that you start. Never in our 134 years have we had such an exciting and dynamic range of courses and events on offer. The Conservatoire is simply buzzing with energy and activities. Whether it’s taking an art or music course, attending our sell-out ‘Family Sunday’ Jazz and Art events or taking individual instrumental lessons-there are so many ways to become a part of what we do.
And remember, The Conservatoire is a social enterprise, so when you ‘make your mark’ here, you are also helping to support our outreach work, making a mark on your community as well. Finally, we’re excited to welcome two new ventures to The Conservatoire this year. The Conservatoire Nursery run by The London Early Years Foundation opens in January, and our long awaited café will open in the spring. Along with our (ever-changing!) new creative play space and our ongoing calendar of events, it looks like 2015 will be a year of making many new marks indeed. We look forward to seeing you. Cheers,
Sydney Thornbury, Chief Executive

With their motor skills now developed children continue to experiment with new instruments while musical concepts are consciously assimilated. Music is now introduced in such a way as to support Phase One of the Letter and Sounds national teaching programme while enhancing and promoting all other areas of learning as described in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Our future musicians are now independent and confident enough to be little maestros…at least for 45 minutes! Children will be able to copy and recognise rhythms, improvise their own musical patterns and create their first compositions tutors: klio blonz, bethan scolding, amanda douge and jo girdlestone The Conservatoire Spring Course Guide 2015 2

One of the first operas to depict contemporary life with a direct and uncompromising gaze, Verdi’s great masterpiece opened the way for a string of operas, from Carmen to Madam Butterfly that dealt head on with real and intractable problems of the modern world. So shocking that early productions had to be transposed back 200 years to the court of Louise XIV, it ended forefver the older idea of opera as primarily concerned wtih royalty and aristocracy and ushered in some of the greatest masterpieces seen on the musical stage. tutor: john andrews

The riot that erupted during the first performance of Stravinsky’s Le Sacre de Printemps is one of the most famous in muiscal history. But how had the worlds of music and ballet reached such a stage of conflicting antagonisms? And why did thie piece above all prove such a cruicible for those tensions. On the eve of the greatest global conflict the world had yet realised, music and dance were about to enter a generation of fighting for the soul of the western cultural tradition, a conflict which is as yet unresolved. tutor: john andrews Friday

More than any composer, Berlioz revolutionissed our conception of what it is to be a creative artist. In his lionisation of Beethoven, his passionate affairs, his dabbling in opiates and his vision of music as inextricably linked to the literary and pictorial arts, he created an image of the composer as tortured genius that is still with us today. In his haunted Symphonie Fantastique he explores the blackest reaches of his own mind in music that really did change the cultural landscape forever. tutor: john andrews
