AFTERNOON TEA Technologies Opportunities in the Australian Curriculum – Kate Baulch ACARA CLOSE

ACARA Technologies Advisory Group Representative - Kate Baulch Kate worked as a Design and Technology secondary school teacher for thirteen years, teaching a range of design, technology and art studies as well as taking on a range of leadership roles, including Design Education, year level and VCE coordination. She left teaching to work on a project focussed on assisting teachers to implement the new Curriculum and Standards Framework, technology curriculum in Victoria. Two comprehensive professional learning programs (one primary and one secondary) were developed, facilitators trained and programs rolled out throughout the state. Kate worked as an education consultant for 10 years, developing curriculum, support and assessment documents as well as designing and delivering professional learning for primary and secondary school teachers. Clients included government education organisations, schools and regions. During this period she also lectured at three Victorian universities, developing and delivering undergraduate and post-graduate courses for technology education. In recent years, while working at Education Services Australia, Kate managed a range of technologies related projects including the Commonwealth funded Australian Schools Innovation in Science, Technology and Mathematics (ASISTM) program, the Victorian Department of Education funded Digital Literacy in schools trial and the Improve online assessment tool trials. The digital technologies aspects of these projects enabled her to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the current school digital technology needs, achievements and possibilities. Kate is the co-author of a number of technology education text books, and has written many articles in the area. For many years she was heavily involved in the working for and with teacher professional organisations, including being a past president of DATTA Victoria as well as DATTA Australia. In 2012 Kate was appointed to the Australian Curriculum: Technologies Advisory Group, whose role is to provide advice and support to Technologies curriculum writers during the development of the Australian curriculum.
