Stewardship: A Way of Life Epiphany of Our Lord “...the Gentiles are co-heirs, members of the same body, and co-partners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel.” Ephesians 3:6 Today we celebrate that Christ came to all of us, not just the Hebrews. He made us all one body with Him. We were all given different gifts; we all have different yet equally valuable roles to play in the Body of Christ. Ask God how He wants you to use your gifts so that we may all “be one” in this Year of Mercy.

“Whatever else be lost among the years, let us keep Christmas still a shining thing: whatever doubts assail us, or what fears, let us hold close one day, remembering it’s poignant meaning for the hearts of men. Let us get back our childlike faith again.” Grace Noll Crowell It is with heartfelt appreciation that I write this note today. I want to thank you, the people of St. Joseph and St. Mary, for the many ways you showed your love for me during the holidays. The gifts, the cards, the baked goods, the warm smiles and greetings; it all touched my heart and gave me peace. I thank God everyday for my assignments and the people who staff these parishes. I wish you many blessings in the next year.

By the time Paul writes his letter to the Ephesians he is completely immersed in his mission, powered by the Holy Spirit, to share God's plan of salvation with all those he encounters. As we hear in this weekend’s second reading, “the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.”

Epiphany, of course, is the feast we celebrate today, that event when the magi visit the “newborn king of the Jews,” pay their respects, and offer their treasures. But the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines epiphany as “a moment in which you suddenly see or understand something in a new or very clear way.” These wise men coming from the east participated in God’s plan to reveal that new way. They were Gentiles, or non-Jews, yet followed the star to acknowledge the Jewish child as their king. The full understanding of this action wouldn’t necessarily become clear until later. That infant would grow up to be killed on a cross with the title “king of the Jews” above his head, then rise from the dead to complete the saving act which was his life’s mission. St. Paul has his own epiphany on the road to Damascus when he came to know Jesus in a new and very clear way (Acts 9:1-19). From chasing down the followers of Jesus he became one himself with a mission to be “a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles” (Romans 15:16).

The “promise” was the one made to Abraham that in his offspring all the nations of the earth would be blessed, but the Jews always thought that it would come about through their elevation over other nations. Now Paul is saying that God has chosen another way — that of bringing the Gentiles into the Church, the body of Christ, on equal terms with the Jews. Like St. Paul, our words and actions present the face of Christ to others. They reveal God's activity in the world and they invite others to join us to the Christian life. Pope Benedict XVI spoke the words above to youth in Genoa to encourage them to grow in their understanding of their Catholic faith. In our mission to evangelize we will have important discussions with all kinds of people about the things that matter most so they can have their own epiphany about the “King forever, ceasing never,” as the carol of the three kings says. After all, the universal scope of God’s love means we invite Jesus “over us all to reign.”

— Paul Schultz

HOLY HOUR AT ST. MARY, MILTON: Please join us in praying for God’s Mercy in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Wednesday, January 7 at 9:00 a.m., immediately following Mass, Holy Hour will be held before the Blessed Sacrament praying that all people may experience the Mercy which God desires for them. In these times there is a tremendous attack on the sanctity of human life from the direct destruction and terror on life to the destruction of relationships in marriage and family

life taking us far away from God’s loving plan. Pray for healing, as emphasized by Pope Francis, for all Christians to transform their hearts and lives so as to become a reflection of God’s mercy. put, spiritual direction is getting good advice from a Catholic you trust. To find an experienced spiritual director, a good place to start is your pastor. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your pastor should be your director; it means that he will often know individuals in the area who can serve as a director.

Spiritual direction is an essential ingr edient for someone looking into the possibility of serving God in the consecrated life. Yet, it isn’t only for people considering a religious vocation. It can help just about anyone who is serious about their spiritual journey. “It is important to have a spiritual guide in our lives,” Pope Benedict XVI has said, “who can help us to understand what it is that God wants from us.” Just like the rich young man of the Gospel, we ask, “What good thing must I do to gain eternal life?” Following the Ten Commandments is a good start, as Jesus himself advised the rich young man. We can also look to God’s Revelation to us through Sacred Scripture (“the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword... it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart,” Hebrews 4:12). We can take guidance from the Sacred Tradition of the Church through its teaching authority and sacraments. We can then consider our present state in life and our past life experiences for good clues as to what God wants for us in any present moment. Beyond these useful strategies, however, the best way for Catholics to find trustworthy answers to the crucial questions is to have a spiritual director. Spiritual direction is an ongoing process of nurturing your spiritual life. It is meant to help deepen one’s relationship with the Lord. Simply

How it works is that you’ll meet regularly, talking about your prayer life, how you’ve been praying, what’s been going on in your prayer, and whether you’ve felt drawn by the Lord in any particular way. You’ll talk about what’s going well and what’s not going so well. It is not a counseling session, however. Don’t expect your spiritual director to help you with psychological or emotional issues. What you can expect is a companion in your spiritual life that will make recommendations and offer support. For suggested reading, A n Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales is a spiritual classic that is a compilation of letters and notes used in the spiritual direction of his cousin. We all need at least some level of spiritual direction – at the very least, we need the counsel of a confessor in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. But Pope Francis notes a distinction. “The examination of conscience isn’t the same for confession and for spiritual direction,” offers the Holy Father. “For confession, I have to look at where I was lacking, where I lost patience, if I was greedy — that kind of thing, those concrete things that are sinful. But in spiritual direction, I must examine what is happening in my heart, where the Spirit is moving, if I felt desolation or consolation, if I am tired, why I am sad: These are things to talk about with the man or woman who is my spiritual director.” Great saints have benefited from spiritual directors who were themselves often saints. For instance, St. Augustine was assisted by St. Ambrose. That would seem like a good model.

Interfaith Community Outreach Ministry The primary work of the Interfaith Community Outreach Ministry (ICOM) at St. Mary Parish is to connect parishioners with volunteer/outreach opportunities within our parish, our community, and beyond. Some of the group projects include: Kids Against Hunger events, GIFTS Men’s Shelter, Milton Food Pantry, Bloodmobile, and more. This Ministry has implemented the GPS / Spiritual Gifts Inventory, a tool to help you discover your hidden talents. By taking the assessment you are not committing to anything; it will simply help you find the area(s) of your greatest talent or gift from God. Have an idea for an outreach opportunity? Join our group and bring your idea with you!

Meetings ICOM meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Ark Meeting Room. The chair and prayer positions are rotated each month.
