THE EU REFERENDUM: WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? On Thursday 23 June, there will be a referendum to decide whether Britain should leave or remain in the European Union.

What is a referendum? A referendum is a vote on a specific question – in this case, whether we should leave or remain in the EU.

What will the referendum question be? “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?” Voters can choose between two responses: Remain a member of the European Union. Leave the European Union. Whichever side gets more than half of all the votes wins.

Why is a referendum being held? In short, when the Conservatives won the 2015 General Election, Prime Minister David Cameron promised to hold a referendum on Europe.

This decision was made because Conservative MPs and the UK Independence Party (UKIP) argued that Britain had not had a say since 1975, when it voted to stay in the EU in a referendum. The EU has changed a lot since then and, as Mr. Cameron said, “It is time for the British people to have their say. It is time to settle this European question in British politics.”

What is the European Union? The European Union – often known as the EU – is an economic and political partnership involving 28 European countries (click here to see the full list). It was created after World War Two to encourage economic co-operation. The idea was that countries that trade together are less likely to go to war. Since then, it has grown to become a ‘single market’, allowing goods and people to move around as if the member states were one country. It has its own currency, the euro, which is used by 19 of the member countries and its own parliament, which sets rules in a wide range of areas including on the environment, transport and your rights as a consumer. In terms of EU laws, the UK has a say or can vote on all EU legislation and a veto on the most sensitive issues.
