The External Borrower Scheme

How can I borrow from UCD Library? If you have a research need to use our Library you can apply to become an External Borrower. Each request is judged individually and we cannot guarantee access, as the needs of our staff and students are of the highest importance.
How much does it cost? We offer the following schemes:

Alumni €75 €125 €200
How do I apply? •

Drop the form in at the Library Admissions Desk or post it to us at Client Services, UCD James Joyce Library, Belfield, Dublin 4, or email it to

We will look at your application and let you know in writing if you have been successful. Applications cannot be dealt with on the spot

Bring the letter, a passport sized photograph and cash or a cheque to cover the fee to the Information Desk in the James Joyce Library. We will issue you with your card. Before coming in, check the Information Desk opening hours here: http://www.ucd.ie/library/using_the_library/open_hours/
How many items can I borrow? • • •
6 general books for two weeks 3 week loan books 2 short loan books

Can I use the e-resources? Under the terms of our user licences with publishers, some electronic resources are not available to external borrowers. External borrowers cannot have off campus access to e-resources under any circumstances. E-resources may only be used for the purposes of private study and research and not for commercial gain.
You don’t have all the books I am looking for, is there anything else I can do? We can get items for you from other Libraries on Inter-Library Loan. For more information on this visit: http://www.ucd.ie/library/finding_information/ill The charge to External Borrowers for this service is €20 per book and €15 per journal article. Membership rights may be withdrawn for overdue books and outstanding fees, at the discretion of the Librarian.
