Holiday Decorating: Put Safety First

• Use only lights that display testing laboratory labels. Before displaying, check them over carefully and dispose of any with broken sockets or frayed wires. • Look for fresh trees with bendable needles to show freshness. Cut an inch from the bottom of the trunk and place in water immediately. Be sure to keep the water container full. • Select only artificial trees and greens that are labeled fire retardant. • Place all trees at least 3 feet away from open flames and heat sources. • Keep a fire extinguisher near all trees. • Make sure that all electric decorations including tree lights are turned off when retiring for the night and when leaving the house. • It's time to take your fresh tree down when the needles begin to drop. • Authentic angel hair is made from spun glass and can irritate skin and eyes. Use non-flammable cotton as a substitute, or handle carefully with gloves. • Burn flaming candles only in glass, metal or pottery holders and place at a safe distance away from children and pets. • When spraying artificial snow, follow product directions carefully to avoid inhaling the substance. • Don't stand on a chair when decorating tall spots! Instead, use a sturdy step ladder. One last word of caution - you don't want to sit out the holidays with a broken leg! Keep all paths clear of decorations to avoid a slip and fall accident. Extension cords can be secured to flooring with duct tape. If a fire should occur, would you and your family know what to do? Now is a great time to review basic fire safety rules, as well as create and practice an emergency escape plan. You can find a child-friendly home fire escape plan at this NFPA website.

All you need is a lift pass and get to the mountain top by 7:45 pm. Warm up afterwards with dinner and dancing at the resort's restaurant. ....continued on page 3
