The Future is Now Students from the 8th grade Murray Avenue Gifted Support class, along with 39 other participating middle schools from the Philadelphia Region, attended the Future City Competition at Archbishop John Carroll High School in Radnor on Saturday, January 20th. The students have been working on this project since late September both during and after school hours developing the following “deliverables” aligned with the Engineering and Design process: a Project Plan, an Essay describing their futuristic city in detail, a Virtual Presentation about their journey creating and managing a virtual city through Sim City technology, an extremely detailed City Model made from recycled materials, a 7 minute presentation about their city and model, along with expense reports, visual displays etc.

In addition to the development of the deliverables, the students who attended the competition on Saturday had to present their project to a group of judges. They also had to answer hours worth of questions throughout the day about their city from a variety of engineers from varying backgrounds. These engineers were evaluating them for special awards. With the help of their engineering mentor, Mr. Greg Jakubowski (who also happens to be a graduate of LM), the students integrated a residential plan for multigenerational housing. This plan earned them the special award for “Best Indoor Environment”. Murray Avenue also walked away with the “Outstanding First Year Team” award. This award is given to the team that was judged the best of the first year teams in the competition.
