The future of sustainable aviation biofuels was discussed in Madrid 

The city of Madrid hosted two international events related to the alternative fuels for aviation: the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Forum (SAFF), from October 20th to 22nd and the Aviation Fuels Task Force (AFTF) meeting, from the 22nd to 25th.

SAFF gathered the three main European projects focused on biofuels and sustainability in aviation: Core Jet-Fuel, Forum-AE and ITAKA.

Madrid, November 14th, 2014. Mrs. Isabel Maestre, head of the Spanish Air Safety Agency (Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea, AESA), dependent on the Spanish Ministry of Public Works and Development, inaugurated the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Forum (SAFF). The event was followed by the Aviation Fuels Task Force (AFTF) plenary meeting As a result, the city of Madrid became the world capital of alternative fuels for aviation during this week. SAFF is framed in the dissemination activities of the three main European projects related to biofuels and sustainability in aviation: Core Jet-Fuel, Forum-AE and ITAKA. Representatives from The European Commission, International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Airports Council International (ACI) attended the event, which also counted with the presence of relevant worldwide experts and stakeholders of the aviation sector. In addition, the main international initiatives regarding aviation biofuels (Bioqueroseno.es, aireg, ISAFF, NISA, NARA, CAAFI…) were also represented in the event. The Forum addressed the key aspects for the implementation of alternative fuels for aviation: policies and incentives in Europe and worldwide, sustainability, reduction of emissions and the latest processing technologies. The most significant progresses and results to date were also discussed during these days. The main objective of the meeting was to help designing suitable strategies to reduce GHG emissions, improve airport air quality and integrate the use of renewable energy in the transport system through the use of sustainable alternative fuels. SAFF contributed to emphasize the cooperation between experts and relevant players in the field of sustainable alternative fuels for aviation, implementing long-lasting, fruitful synergies and a vivid exchange of knowledge between the participants. The outcomes of the event are focused in the achievement of the objectives set by the European Union in terms of emissions reduction and use of renewable sources for energy transport in 2020. Public presentations and notes of the discussion panels will be available from November 7th in the event’s website (www.itaka-project.eu/Shared%20Documents/index.html).
