About HeartFlow

The Challenge

HeartFlow is an exciting, revolutionary, medical technology start-up that has received international recognition for exceptional strides in healthcare innovation. HeartFlow is redefining the way coronary artery disease (CAD) is diagnosed and treated. CAD is the most common form of heart disease and the number one killer of men and women in the United States. HeartFlow operates as a SaaS business that processes standard coronary Computed Tomography (cCTA) images to generate digital 3D models of patients’ coronary arteries to help physicians diagnose and treat patients with suspected CAD. HeartFlow is a VC-backed, pre-IPO company that received FDA clearance in 2014.

As a rapidly growing and increasingly successful business, HeartFlow recognized its on-premise data centers were no longer able to meet the company’s business needs. It needed a solution that could support a globally accessible infrastructure. The company also needed the flexibility to leverage the latest technologies and tools to enable robust development and consistent delivery of the product.

The HeartFlow DevOps team decided on a cloud-first strategy with AWS to address the following challenges: - Moving all application infrastructure from the data center to the cloud - Creating a standardized cloud provisioning workflow - Automating application deployment and auto-scale based on key metrics - Ensuring compliance in a regulated medical device and HIPAA environment

The Solution

After evaluating different tools and solutions, HeartFlow DevOps decided to tackle these challenges with the Scalr Hybrid Cloud Management Platform (CMP). With the help of Scalr, HeartFlow DevOps has moved 100% of its application infrastructure into AWS, and built a standardized, automated and compliant provisioning workflow that spans multiple regions in AWS for production and development accounts. When selecting a CMP, time-to-value was a key factor for HeartFlow. Scalr empowered HeartFlow DevOps to deploy applications consistently through a simplified provisioning process. Scalr also provided HeartFlow DevOps with ease-of-use, agility, and the functionality required to address complex and growing cloud environments.

Scalr’s Hybrid Cloud Management Platform is designed for enterprises deploying public and private cloud infrastructure at global scale. Scalr’s Organizational Model allows for highly efficient policy and role based controls for security and cost management, while delivering localized autonomy and maximum productivity for IT teams. The resulting ‘Federation of IT’ is core to Scalr’s product design mission.

Self-Service

Governance & Compliance

HeartFlow DevOps uses Scalr to deliver self-service to developers and increase their productivity in compliant environments. Developers are able to log in to the Service Catalog and gain access to the resources that have been designated to them based on their roles and permissions using Scalr RBAC policies. Developers get a productivity boost with an easy workflow, while best practices and compliance are assured.

Whether it is developers accessing the Service Catalog, or the HeartFlow DevOps team building applications, compliance with company policies is enforced. HeartFlow DevOps uses Scalr to ensure that workloads are automatically placed in the right networks and security groups, and run the appropriate Chef recipes. HeartFlow DevOps benefits from seeing a complete picture of the access to their cloud environments, ownership, and provisioning workflows. This visibility provides transparency of access and assists the team with compliance audits.

Automation HeartFlow DevOps deploys applications at a global scale and must meet the scaling demand for their SaaS platform. HeartFlow DevOps uses Scalr to automate the progression of applications from Development to Production, and auto-scale applications based on metrics such as messages from Amazon’s Simple Queue Service (SQS). HeartFlow DevOps uses Scalr Farms (Application Blueprints) to facilitate deployments and seamlessly move code between development stages in advanced CI/CD workflows.

Cost Visibility

HeartFlow is at the cutting edge of cloud technology and has been seeing incredible success as they continue to redefine cardiovascular care. The Scalr team could not be more excited to continue to support HeartFlow’s cloud expansion!

“Scalr helps us consistently deploy applications on a global scale. It makes it easy for developers to get what they need in their own development accounts, and prevent access to production.” Mark Fleishman - Manager, Cloud & DevOps, HeartFlow

As HeartFlow’s cloud footprint increases, it must have full visibility over its cloud spend at the application level. The Scalr Cost Manager helps HeartFlow DevOps gain financial visibility into their cloud environments, stay within budget, and forecast future expenditures.

The Scalr Hybrid Cloud Management Platform enables today’s enterprises to achieve cost-effective, automated and standardized application deployments across multi-cloud environments. Scalr utilizes a hierarchical, top-down approach to policy enforcement that empowers administrators to find the balance between the needs of finance, security, IT and development teams. Leading global organizations have selected the Scalr platform, including Samsung, NASA JPL, Gannett and Food & Drug Administration.
