six blind men – a parable The First Blind Man Touched its Sturdy Side: “This is Very Much Like a Wall”

“Clearly this is Like a Large Spear”

The Sixth Blind Man seized its swinging tail; “For sure this is like a Hanging Rope”

The Fifth Blind Man Leaned against its huge leg: “This is Like a Sturdy Tree”

The Second Blind Man Touched its Smooth Round Sharp Tusk

The Fourth Blind Man Felt its Flapping Ears. “This surely is like a Great Fan to Stir the Air”

The Third Blind Man Grasped its Wiggling Trunk: “Undoubtedly, This is like a Mighty Snake”

a many-splendoured internet…. • connectivity between computers and between networks • connectivity between users of different computers and networks • connectivity between people and things • connectivity between things and other things • this “ubiquitous connectivity” will have wideranging consequences – – – –

IoT: key technological enablers • Tagging Things: RFID and related technologies – enables real-time wireless/contactless identification & tracking

• Sensing Things: Sensor technologies – enables detection of environmental status and collection of varied data on physical parameters (velocity, presence of foreign objects, temperature, etc..)

• Thinking Things: Smart technologies

- building intelligence into the edges of the network, and even in

materials themselves

• Shrinking Things: Nanotechnology – makes possible the “networking” of smaller and smaller objects Source: ITU Internet Report “Internet of Things”, 2005

uniformity or diversity?

towards gentler technology… • that remains a means to an end, not the end in itself • that is a tool at the service of humanity • that does not threaten the private sphere of human existence, or inhibit individual self-expression • that is accessible to all in an open and transparent manner • that labels “things” and not individuals • that allows for difference and individual choice …that places user interests (and thus interests of society as a whole, including business!) at the heart of technological innovation, design and development Lara Srivastava 02/08

So what is the vision of the future internet, or the ‘internet of things’?

one which is built upon a multi-faceted approach, that is not blinded by self-interest or limited by a narrow frame of reference
