Despite a turbulent year for the UK economy, the I.T. and technology sectors have stood firm and continued their growth. Businesses are continuing to hire to meet demand but there are issues such as Brexit negotiations and access to labour that are creating nervousness. The job market is in a good place but employers will only continue to hire and invest if they feel assured about the future ahead. The digital economy is still expanding at an extraordinary rate, with the UK securing £6.8 billion last year in digital technology investment, more than twice that of any other European country. Growth drivers in the UK are expected to come predominately from the banking, insurance and wealth and asset management sectors, closely followed by IT and digital, meaning the pressure remains for businesses to find top talent. The candidate-led market means those with in-demand skills are firmly in the driving seat, with the ability to pick and choose where and when they work. Employers across the country continue to actively hire for skilled IT professionals, with cyber security and data security analysts in high demand as businesses become data-driven and more exposed to an increased risk of security breaches. Transformation programmes are creating new areas of demand, particularly in data science and DevOps. There continues to be strong demand for professionals with the technical ability to help businesses implement digital transformation across multiple industries. For IT professionals, salaries are increasing at a rate reflective of the skills deficit in the market, with permanent salaries rising by an average of 3%, compared to just under 1% for contractor day rates.
