Wales Prospectus 2017-18 The Military Preparation School

mpct.co.uk 1

As founding Managing Director, I am delighted to welcome you to our latest Military Preparation School (MPS) Prospectus. This document will outline the opportunities in which a collaborative approach to education can benefit the learners. Since the very first programme in 1999 we have continued to develop our curriculum, our pedagogy and our people to ensure that MPS has the skills and the tools to reach and advance young people through a positive, active learning environment. We aim to build upon the work that has already been achieved by schools. Our approach has been recognised as best practice by Ofsted, where we were judged as outstanding across all areas. In addition to this, we have recently been recognised by TES’ prestigious award, Training Provider of the Year 2017. These quality indicators demonstrate that we are an organisation that is fully committed to the very highest quality of teaching and learning. The results of which are reflected in the outcomes of our learners.

Managing Director Foreword

MPS’ primary focus is to develop our learners’ core values. This runs as a spine through the entire organisation. Learners attending the programme will develop their self-esteem and confidence, which will support their personal growth. Learners become ready to learn and have the skills to be positive members of their class. We have a highly developed differentiated approach, which supports the less able learner and challenges the gifted and talented. Finally, the success of the learners is a direct result of our highly trained and motivated MPS team. They teach through example and are role models who inspire learners to reach their potential. Thank you for taking time to learn more about MPS and I do hope that we will be working together in the future to provide outstanding learning for the young people of Great Britain.

Head of Schools Foreword

It is with great privilege to lead the MPS as Head of Schools and I welcome the responsibility of ensuring we are inspiring excellence through our outstanding education and enrichment curriculum. Through close partnership with schools and local authorities, we work together to ensure we send young people out into the world who are ready to make a positive contribution to society.

As a dynamic organisation, we are proactive to the ever changing educational environment which enables us to provide current and accurate teaching and learning to the young learners of our provision. Academic success is integral to us at the MPS, however, we place high importance on the holistic learning development of the learners that complements their current school curricula. We allow them to develop the skill set required for positive progression to further education, apprenticeship and employment. During my time spent at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and as a British Army Officer, I was able to develop my leadership and management style and proficiency. From my acquisition of educational experience through qualified teacher status and school management, I take great pride in ensuring each and every learner has the opportunity to achieve and excel.

Introduction

The Motivational Preparation College for Training (MPCT) is a thriving and distinguished training provider with 3 distinct provisions: The Military Preparation School, The Military Preparation College and the Sports Academy.

The MPS actively supports and complements all local school curricula. We support partner schools and local authorities in securing accredited vocational qualifications for learners across England and Wales. The MPS focuses on two main objectives: qualification attainment and developing the skill set required for positive progression to further education, apprenticeship and employment. The MPS provision provides a curriculum for life through preparation for lifelong learning. We have a professional and engaging curriculum that welcomes a diverse range of learner who is able to access and succeed through our expansive curriculum options. The extensive enrichment programme built into our curriculum allows learners to develop a holistic approach to learning and personal development. High emphasis is placed on numeracy and literacy development, with all instructors holding recognised teaching qualifications. We are not a boot camp, nor do we push learners towards a military career, we are focused on level 2 accredited qualifications and equipping learners with the foundations to achieve and thrive in a changing world. We are accredited with grade 1 outstanding in all areas from Ofsted and have been recognised as Training Provider of the Year 2017, by the highly acclaimed Times Educational Supplement (TES) FE Awards. Engagement Programme

Bespoke Character Education

The engagement provision is a non-qualification based programme which can complement existing mainstream education, or establish learning for those who have struggled with engagement and motivation. The duration of the programme is based on individual requirements and can be used in conjunction with a qualification based programme.

The MPS provides a bespoke programme for schools which focuses on the development of personal attributes of a young learner. Programmes normally run between 8 - 12 weeks but can be bespoke to the requirements of the school and learners. The course can be adapted to cater to a particular theme or identified objectives. Previous courses have focused on behaviour and respect, to developing leadership and confidence. These personal qualities are vital in supporting the opportunities and skill sets required for positive progressions. These programmes are beneficial for schools looking to reengage learners into education by developing a positive learning experience which is replicated in their existing school curriculums.

Our engagement programme is ideally suited to the following learners: »» Learners wanting and requiring development in key personal attributes »» Key Stage 3 learners »» Disengaged learners wanting to complement existing mainstream education

School Staff Training The MPS offer staff training events and inset day training support to schools. These unique and engaging training sessions are bespoke to the needs and objectives of the school. Through an engaging military theme, we offer teambuilding package days to develop group cohesion and unity. We provide insights into our active resources and unique activities for teachers and support staff to implement in their everyday teaching and learning. The highly experienced MPS instructors can lead and train on a number of aspects in terms of engagement activities, unique learning strategies and embedding numeracy and literacy through active learning. We have successfully run independent training days for schools and also have been implemented into internal school training events.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Support The MPS has extensive experience in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE). We offer support to schools in planning and the organisation of their in-house school DofE programmes and can facilitate active support through preparation lessons and attendance on the expedition phase. Using the extensive outdoor and military experience of our instructors, we are able to deliver high level DofE support to schools to maximise the experience for learners.

“My son Iwan Lewis has attended MPS since Year 10. As a parent, I was a little reluctant with my son’s request at first. However, I have witnessed a journey of confidence, support and teamwork. I witnessed no discrimination and excellent team spirit, this is a credit to all who work and support at MPS. Thank you for giving my son the skills, motivation and confidence to become the young man he has become.”

Julie Frost (Nathan Hemus)

“Jacob was increasingly going off the rails in Year 8 and asked to attend the MPS. After a little sorting, Jacob was able to join his peer group after the course had started; the staff made it possible. I cannot tell you how grateful I am, Jacob is far from perfect but MPS changed him dramatically and gave him a purpose and respect. Jacob changed overnight, I will always be eternally grateful to the staff of MPS as they gave my son a chance and a future, he now has a direction and heads to college in September to start his journey towards engineering.”

Michelle Kendell (Mother of Cleo Kendell, Willows High School – currently studying at Aberystwyth University ‘International Politics and Intelligence studies’) “Cleo’s years with the MPS really played a big part in helping her confidence grow, it added parts to her character that are not usually taught at school. I saw the changes in her from the start, when I’d offer to help her and she’d refuse, insisting on ironing her own clothes and waking herself up every morning for school or to go running. She took control of her actions and her future during that time, her confidence was reinforced by her own belief in herself and what she could achieve and that’s very important at that age. I’d recommend MPS to all students, especially those who lack confidence or direction. I’m really proud of her, she’s made great choices in her life so far, and MPS was one of them.”

As an Assistant Headteacher in a secondary school in Wales we have been involved with the MPS for 10 years. During my 40 years experience in secondary education it has always been very important to me that students achieve their full potential no matter what their capabilities. I would like all of them to leave school having improved their skills which will enable them to be adaptable, with a well-rounded education, breadth of interests and ready to move into employment or further education.

I have been a mathematics teacher for 28 years, all of which have been spent at Stanwell School with the last six and a half years as Deputy Headteacher. During this time I have also trained as an Estyn Peer Inspector. As an educator, I believe that I have the responsibility to help mould the next generation of adults enabling them all to reach their full potential, prepare them for life after school and shape them into becoming good citizens for the future. Stanwell School has used MPS as a training provider for the last twelve years for some Key Stage 4 learners. For the learners who have accessed this provision it has improved learners’ attendance, engagement and achievement, not just at MPS but in school as well.

MPCT has been actively engaged in the enhancement of life chances for young people for years. The success of the education and training strategies employed by MPCT have made an enormous difference to young people who may not have found their way easily into adulthood, employment and as a contributing member of society. It is apparent that a significant number of young people who enrol on the MPCT programme need additional financial and resource assistance in order to help meet their potential. Quite simply, the motivation, support and encouragement they receive at MPCT is not always mirrored at home.

Motivation and Learning Trust

The formation of the Motivation & Learning Trust (MLT) young people’s charity is designed to meet this need. MLT will take a proactive and decisive role in ensuring that young people within the MPCT family who need assistance get it. We know that some of our young people struggle to present themselves to best effect when seeking employment. They simply cannot afford clothing and the necessary personal effects to enhance their chances. We act as an enabler for young people who are or have been learners of MPCT in the form of practical assistance in order to enhance their life chances in the challenging arena of employment and to enable them to participate fully in society as responsible, independent and mature adults. MLT needs your help in order to achieve its aims. With your help we can and will make a difference in the formative stages of the lives of the young people with whom we work.
