SPECIAL 2018 EMPERORS PALACE NATIONAL YEARLING SALE PRINT EDITION # 1

The TBA is a Happy Place again! GOOD VIBES AT THE START OF 2018 SALE

AT the start of today’s 2018 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale at the TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, Gary Grant of BloodStock SA is taken with what he terms, “A Happy Place”. “The sentiments on the sales grounds are all positive, like in the glory days. The mood is jovial and the atmosphere is relaxed, like it hasn’t been in a while. We’re hoping this is going to translate into a good sale.”

year to a R2 million profit for 2017. He said: “It’s vital that Bloodstock SA makes a profit because this is where the TBA gets their funding which enables them to make contributions to the industry. We are also giving cash back to breeders with reduced levies and commissions and reduced entries and acceptance fees.

Grant said that in his few days spent at the complex he has seen a good flow of prospective buyers and their comments have been good. “The general feeling is that this is a better catalogue than the one we had last year.”

“Now, more than ever believe in looking after our vendors. If they are not happy, everything is affected and we will lose business. As things stand now, 80% is being paid at 30 days and by 60 days, we’re up to 90-95%.” They haven’t written anything off and have collected every cent so far. (to p 2)

AN IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM BLOODSTOCK SA

THE HAPPY PLACE (from page 1) “As I said to another publication the other day, we are making strides and we believe we’re improving with each sale. We’d like to improve more, we are not the finished article.”

A ruling in the Consumer Protection Act requires every person applying for a buyers card, whether a first time buyer or platinum card holder, to submit a copy of their ID, together with their proof of residence.

Grant said that buyers are also important to the team.

In order to smooth the process and to avoid delays in issuing buyers cards for the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale in April, kindly send us the requisite documentation as soon as possible.

BSA offer bonuses for selected Gr1’s and Gr2’s and have implemented a series of maiden juvenile bonuses. “We offered a maiden juvenile bonus of R40k for 2017 sales graduates which we are bumping up to R50k for 2018 and they have been very well received.

“It’s quite a nice injection for those owners and nice for them to get cash back early. If you look at the price range of horses that qualified, many have more than paid back their purchase price already, so I think it’s working well. “I think we’re seeing bigger juvenile fields and hopefully the stakes bonus is part of the reason for that. If we can help new buyers have quick return, they may look at buying a classic horse a little further down the line.” Grant predicts that the top end of the sale will be strong, and that there will be plenty of value for buyers in the other sessions. “Last year we had more money than horses at the top end of the market and I think breeders took note of that, which has helped form a strong catalogue.”

Lot 382— from Hemel N Aarde: A beautiful, strong and well balanced colt by Potala Palace from Competitor, by Tara’s Halls. Dam won the Listed Sun Classique Handicap.

“It’s going to be difficult to compare because of the split catalogue, but if you asked for my dream result, it would be an increase in the median and clearance rate. We wish everyone a great sale and an enjoyable time with us.” - tt.

Oratorio, as expected, producing the goods! “It’s always wonderful to be proven right and in the case of our highly rated international sire, Oratorio, our policy of ‘give them time’, seems to be paying off as his progeny makes waves on race courses country-wide,” says Avontuur GM Pippa Mickleburgh. “Carlita showed her class in the Listed Eastern Cape Fillies Nursery and recently it was the turn of the beautiful grey, Mardi Gras out of Sarabande who won in fine style. We therefore have high hopes for the Oratorio yearlings, making up the bulk of our crop set for the National Yearling Sale in Gosforth Park this week.” Avontuur starts off with the two Select colts. First up is Lot 58, Cassimbo out of Torra Bay (AUS) who is a powerful, very attractive Oratrio colt from an internationally successful female line.

Lot 96: VIVANT (Oratorio x Viva)

Lot 69 – Vivant - out of Viva is a strong, robust brother to Live Life and Cold as Ice. “Viva is one of our foundation mares and she hasn’t thrown a colt in a long time, which makes this boy a wonderful surprise,” says Mickleburgh.

TBA’s annual Gr1 Breeders Awards THE Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of SA (TBA) hosted the annual Grade 1 Breeders Awards at Emperors Palace on Friday evening, at a cocktail function held after the Annual General Meeting of the Association.

DR Marianne Thomson won two trophies as breeder of Bull Valley, for his wins in the Tsogo Sun and Mercury Sprints. The trophies were awarded by the TBA’S Chairman, Lee Scribante. (Candiese Marnewick).

The awards are a celebration and an acknowledgment of excellence for our South African bred horses, and the TBA feels that receiving an award for breeding a Grade 1 winner should be celebrated and enjoyed with all fellow breeders and the winning connections. Apart from the 27 Grade 1 trophies handed out to the winning breeders, the 2017 Equus Awards winners were also recognised again on the evening with a small token to celebrate their achievements. The award for Outstanding International Achievement was given to (and well deserved by) Drakenstein Stud Farm for Singapore Slings Grade 1 Hong Kong Cup victory. This award is usually given out at the Equus Awards but the TBA felt that it was fitting that it be recognised at our very own breeders awards, among fellow breeders, to celebrate the enormity of breeding an international Grade 1 winner.

Singapore Sling has quickly found himself the poster-boy for South African Thoroughbreds and features in current magazines, and in the new promotional video launched at the awards and to be shown at the TBA complex during the week.

Singapore Sling reverts to a mile for Sha-Tin feature

Singapore Sling, back to 1600m. TRAINER Tony Millard has his sights set on next season with Hong Kong Classic Cup winner Singapore Sling, but he is still hopeful of a big effort when the SA-bred four-year-old drops back to 1600m for the Gr1 Champions Mile at Sha Tin on Sunday.

BENMARNE Stud’s Select Session yearlings: Lot 6 BINDI (by Querari from Quilted Bonnet) and LOT 87 VERATRUM (by Querari from Amber Bouquet), the full-brother to Monks Hood (below).

Singapore Sling is the only four-year-old among the nine runners for this year’s Champions Mile. There has only been one winner from that age group in the last decade – the John Mooretrained Xtension in 2011 – while all four Classic Cup winners to run in the Champions Mile have been unplaced.

However, Millard did taste spring glory with a Classic Cup winner in Ambitious Dragon, preparing the champion to take the Gr1 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup (2000m) in 2011. “I thought he deserved his chance in here,” Millard said. “A lot of these horses have been on the go all season and he has only had five starts, so he’s got a bit of freshness on his side.” Singapore Sling, a winner of the Gr2 Dingaans (1600m) at Turffontein pre-arrival, has proven to be a solid indicator among this year’s four-yearold crop. A strong second to the John Sizetrained Nothingilikemore in the Hong Kong Classic Mile in January, he then took the Hong Kong Classic Cup before another game performance when runner-up to Size’s Ping Hai Star in the BMW Hong Kong Derby (2000m) last month. Millard had the choice between the QEII Cup and the Champions Mile for Singapore Sling, but decided that the son of Philanthropist would benefit long-term from a step back in trip. “I have no concerns about him running out 2000m,” Millard said. “I think he showed last start that he is capable of seeing out that trip. What I’m thinking about though is having a horse for next season. “Coming back to the mile gives him a softer run to end this season, which is still his first in Hong Kong, and hopefully it is a good stepping stone to next season’s big races.”

Nou gaan ons braai..!

THE TBA Council cooked up a storm for breeders at the Breeders Bash, TBA Complex, on Friday night. Council provided all the meat, the highlight of which was Rennie Price’s rare rump! (His meat on the braai, that is!) The band Afritude, kindly sponsored by New Turf Carriers, kept everyone entertained. A casual and relaxed evening for some thoroughly good fun and breeder banter.
