FEATURED ARTICLES APPLYING PRE-CALCULUS TO REAL LIFE!

“Leadership is a choice, not a position ” - Steven Covey

By Mark Barry, on behalf of the Mathematics Department

E

arlier this month, Pre-Calculus students in Mr. Barry’s class took their trigonometry skills on the road as they calculated the height of objects around campus. Using the compass app on their iPhones, students measured the angle of elevation as they looked up at the stadium lights, old gym, and library. Back in class, they used the tangent relationship to calculate the heights of these objects. “It was really fun,” said Senior Andre Carpio. “It’s one thing to see it on notes, but when we went out and used it I really saw angle of elevation in a whole new way.”

TUSTIN MUN’ERS BRAVE THE COLD AT TRAVEL CONFERENCES By Kristina Ching, on behalf of Model United Nations

T

ustin High MUN fought ice, snow, wind and rain on their two recent trips to Boston and Italy. Students bundled up before breaking off into their respective committees at each conference, excited to present their dynamic speeches and comprehensive resolutions. BosMUN was held at the beautiful Park Plaza hotel in downtown, and GeMUN was spread out over multiple historic and breathtaking buildings in the center of Genoa. In Boston, committees debated a wide range of topics, and simulated a diverse range of groups from a Parent-Teacher Association to the settlers traveling along the Oregon Trail in the 19th century. In Genoa, delegates were challenged by the differences of European Style committees and were able to broaden their global citizenship by interacting with students from all over Europe and the Middle East. The Tiller MUNer’s were privileged to also have had the chance to get to better know their new principal, Dr. Tuin, when he accompanied them to Italy. It was a pleasure to be able to sit down with him at dinners and have candid conversations about what it’s like as a Tustin High student- an opportunity not many are afforded. We feel extremely lucky as a program to have such supportive administration, and Dr. Tuin’s presence definitely encouraged the fierce determination to do well at the conference, despite Many freezing temperatures.

ASB JUMPING THE ROAPES OF TEAM BUILDING By David Peay, Activities Director

T ASB JUMP ROPE BONDING

he Tustin High School ASB is constantly looking forward to finding new ways to unite it’s members as a team. It is essential for great leadership to build a strong cohesive group that works together to provide activities that help to connect the student to our school. The team “jump rope” activity helped to strengthen the bond of leadership through a unified goal: “How many team members can jump rope at one time!” The exercise was fun and eyeopening as our fearless leader, Dr. Tuin, showed off his jump roping skills! His talents continue to amaze one and all. If good leadership starts at the top, Dr. Tuin already has a jump on it!

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK! By Melissa Trout, Girls’ Athletics Director

By Tom Giebe, Boys’ Athletics Director

rea DeFord is this week’s Lady Tiller Athlete of the Week. As the starting catcher on the Varsity Softball team, she plays an intricate part of Tustin’s defense. However, it was Drea’s contribution at the plate that earned this week’s recognition. In the tournament last week, Drea had 9 RBIs and a grand slam home run. Drea’s senior leadership has helped this young Varsity squad come together under a new coaching staff. In addition to playing softball, she is also involved in Tustin’s MUN Program and takes numerous AP courses. Drea and the rest of the Tillers will take on Godinez next week.

he Tiller Boys’ Athlete of the Week is baseball player Dwayne Angebrandt. Dwayne, a senior, has pitched extremely well in recent weeks, highlighted by a 10 strikeout performance versus Rancho Cucamonga High School. According to Coach Charles Chatman, Dwayne “dominated hitters” throughout the game in help lead the Tillers to a 3-1 victory. In addition to his excellence on the field, Dwayne currently has a 3.5 GPA in the classroom. The Tiller baseball team will continue its season with a few more non-league games before starting their league schedule against Cypress on April 11th. Great job Dwayne, and GO TILLERS!
