THE TILLER NEWS T-TOWN’S WEEKLY NEWSLETTER, PRODUCED BY STAFF AND STUDENTS

BRIEF HAPPENINGS MUN GOES ABROAD!

TILLERS IN THE POOL

A NIGHT OF LAUGHS

Our Senior (and some Junior) MUNers took the competition on the road this week and headed to Italy! The team arrived on Tuesday morning and will be competing around the country for the next week! #TillersAbroad

Girls’ Water Polo had an exciting end to their already great season. After earning a spot in the CIF bracket, they made it to the semifinal round! Their season officially ended Wednesday, but not before making the Tillers proud!

For ONE NIGHT ONLY, the THS Theatre Arts Department presented a Teachers vs. Students Improv Night! Staff went head to head with some of our best theatre students in a night of hilarious improvised scenes!

FEATURED ARTICLES CINDERELLA IS COMING TO THS! By David Peay, on behalf of the Visual and Performing Arts Department

T

he Fine Arts Department is in full drive as they prepare for the spring performances of the musical Cinderella. The Drama & Vocal Music Departments are rehearsing daily to bring this production to a proper “Tiller Musical Performance”! Ms. Markley and Mr. Peay are heading up the endeavor through their support of the dramatic & musical requirements of the show. Ms. Hsu and Ms. Rado are assisting artistically with costuming and set preparations. This is a very strong cast and I look forward to an amazing performance by all. Cinderella will arrive on the Plaza Stage April 18th and continue through until April 20th, 2018. Tickets will go on sale April 1st. Reserved seats will be $10 and general admission is $7. Mark your calendars now for this enchanted evening of outdoor theatre. This is one BALL you will not want to miss!

STRATEGIES AND TECHNOLOGIES TO IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES By Roland Jones, #Tillervation Program Advisor

“Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened. ” - Dr. Seuss

T

he Connect Coaches at THS offer regular professional development (PD) opportunities for staff. Twice a month teachers voluntarily come together in our shared learning space (the Collab Lab) and are introduced to a variety of technologies and strategies designed to improve student outcomes in the classroom. In recent weeks, teachers have been introduced to the use of Pear Deck (a digital tool that promotes real-time anonymous feedback to students), Google Sites (website building for students to highlight their work in the form of a digital portfolio), CUBS (an analysis tool for students to better understand the writing prompts they are being asked to respond to), and TAG (a critique tool to help students offer each other constructive feedback of the work they complete in class). As the semester continues, the Collab Lab PD’s will introduce new strategies and offer refresher opportunities for some of the PD that has been offered in the last two years.

HEART HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH IS COMING TO AN END! By David Peay, Activities Director

T

he ASB has been running Heart Health Awareness activities on Fridays on the Plaza stage. Students have participated in activities from “Musical Chairs”, “Balloon Stomp”, “Hula-Hoop” races, and obstacle courses- all designed to get the Heart Beating! Students have won $50 credit to the THS Student Store. One yearbook was raffled, as well as 1 free ticket to PROM. A special “Thank You” goes out to Mr. Chris Rooney, who has help organize and run these events. The ASB is now preparing for our annual drive to support the Leukemia Foundation. More information will be presented next week. Thank you for all your support, and we look forward to a great drive for a great cause!

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK! A LESSON FROM DR. SEUSS By Melissa Trout, Girls’ Athletics Director

T

he Tustin Girls’ Water Polo Program had a roller coaster of a season. They had some impressive pre-league victories against Division 2 schools, only to fall in a few close matches in League. This is a team that learned to win on the road after losing our home pool to a pool heater issue in the middle of the season. However, despite setbacks and challenges, this is a team whose resilient Tiller spirit pulled them to an accomplishment that has never occurred in the Water Polo Program: A Semi-final CIF Game. After beating three higher-ranked teams in the playoffs, the team squared off against Culver City last night. In true Tustin fashion, our ladies fought to the last second of the match but were unable to keep our double-over time winning streak alive. Although there were many tears on the pool deck afterwards, the last two weeks of the season are memories that these strong athletes will always remember. And though these words from Dr. Seuss will bring little comfort now, they may ring true in future months: “Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened.” TUSTIN HIGH SCHOOL Home of the Tillers 1171 El Camino Real, Tustin, CA 92780 (714) 730-7414
