THE TILLER NEWS T-TOWN’S WEEKLY NEWSLETTER, PRODUCED BY STAFF AND STUDENTS

IMPORTANT NOTICES from our Principal, Dr. Jon Tuin CHALLENGE SUCCESS AT TUSTIN HIGH SCHOOL Tustin High School will be participating in an exciting new layer of support for next year called “Challenge Success”. It’s a program designed to maintain and grow our current academic progress, as well as address the potential stress, anxiety, and/or competition that often exists at a high-performing high school. “Challenge Success” comes out of The Stanford Graduate School of Education and has been implemented successfully at high schools across the country. HERE is a link to additional information about the program that is specific to parents. Also, if you are interested, there is a book that has been published related to the program titled Overworked and Underprepared.” A number of our staff members have committed to reading the book in an effort to better educate themselves on the current issues potentially present in our culture. We look forward to utilizing this additional consultation to provide a structure for us to identify and address school-wide needs and support our students. Thank you.

PARENT SURVEY Your ideas and opinions are important to our school in maintaining a strong educational program. FEATURED ARTICLES WORLD HISTORY IS MAKING A SHIFT By David Hughes, History/Social Science Department Instructional Coach

H

ow to teach all of World History in ten short months is perpetually a challenge. Our World History Team, Jason Lee and Andrea-Marie Gomez, are shifting from the traditional textbook date and timeline approach, to one that focuses on what historical events and periods can teach us today. By examining historical events and themes, students are using evidence to explain their causes. Students use inquiry-based projects, role playing, and debates to better understand our past. For example: London England 1888-1891, historical evidence is presented for multiple possible murder suspects. Students collaborate and research hard and circumstantial evidence. They then formulate a conclusion after creating a Google website with their evidence and present who they believe was actually “Jack The Ripper.” Modern themes beginning with the Cold War, include projects that delve into the reasons India and Pakistan split, South African Apartheid, and Push/Pull immigration- just to name a few. The history of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is researched and students create brochures with their proposals on how to move forward. The conflict in Syria is presented through a student-generated gallery walk. Through creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and various means of communication, Tustin High is pulling World History into the present.

AVID CELEBRATIONS! By Joanna Vandal, AVID Program Director

C

ongratulations to AVID seniors Alfonso Rosas, Cynthia Pacheco, Daniel Lopez, Jordan Castaneda, Aileen Peralta, Uriel Castaneda, and Citlalli Vergara for receiving a combined total of $106,000 in scholarship money at the OCDE AVID Senior Awards Ceremony! We are so proud of all of our seniors who are headed to over 20 different universities across the nation. Last month, the Tustin High School AVID program received a three year revalidation term as an AVID National Demonstration School. Only the top 3% of the 6,000 AVID schools in the country receive this designation. We are excited to welcome over 120 new freshman to AVID next year and are busy planning our college field trips. We wish all of our seniors well as they venture on to their college journeys or military enlistments, and wish our continuing students good luck on finals - finish strong!

A LOOK BACK: THE (ATHLETIC) YEAR IN REVIEW By Melissa Trout, Girls’ Athletics Director

T

he 2017/18 school year was a tremendous year to be a Tiller. We started the school year off strong with some of our most successful fall teams in recent history. Our Football, Water Polo, and Girls’ Volleyball teams all qualified for CIF this season. Two of our Lady Tiller golfers advanced to the playoffs. Some of our strongest Cross-Country runners represented THS in the playoffs too. Our Tustin tennis players showed promising growth as well. They put more “Ws” on the board-including some big League games! Our winter sports took up right where fall sports left off continuing our growth in excellence. Our Wrestling Program, with nearly 100 male and female participants, had a fantastic season with wrestlers participating in CIF and Masters. Both our Basketball Programs had tremendous success in League and CIF. Although they were successful in the Empire League, both Varsity Soccer teams were one win away from being CIF contenders. Since these squads are stacked with lower classmen talent, the future looks bright for these strong programs. However, there were few matches more exciting than the Girls’ Water Polo post-season. This tremendous team went all the way to semi-finals defeating some of the biggest contenders in the sport. Spring was a beautiful season for athletics. Our Lacrosse teams both had very successful seasons by winning more matches and having more fun than in years passed. The Tiller softball players made some tremendous memories with new coaches; no one will ever forget their impressive win over Valencia on senior day. The Tustin golfers and tennis squad built late momentum in the season, and one of our golfers qualified for CIF. Our tennis team was one win away from qualifying for the playoff bracket as a team but sent an athlete to the playoffs in individuals. Our track and swim teams both had individuals participate in CIF posting some of our fastest times in recent history. The Tiller baseball team started their season strong with a momentous win over Mater Dei at Angels Stadium and finished strong in league; they will play their first CIF game later this week. Our Varsity Volleyball team were Empire League Champions, and this incredibly strong team is using their “good vibes” to continue their success in CIF playoffs. They will be playing in CIF Finals on Saturday morning. However, nothing brings the Athletic Department more pride than when our hard working student-athletes are offered the opportunity to take their skills to the next level. Our football, baseball, and softball programs all had athletes who were offered college scholarships. We wish these soon-to-be Tiller Alums the best of luck in their next endeavors.
