United Nations University Objectives: The United Nations University (UNU) is an international community of scholars engaged in research, postgraduate training and dissemination of knowledge in furtherance of the purposes and principles of the United Nations, its Peoples and Member States. It serves as a think tank for the United Nations system, contributes to capacity building particularly in developing countries, and serves as a platform for new and creative ideas and dialogue. UNU is searching for a new Executive Officer in the Office of the Rector to be located at its Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. The Executive Officer will report to and serve as a senior colleague of the UNU Rector and share responsibility for the planning, implementation and coordination of the global academic activities of the University carried out from the UNU Centre in Tokyo and through UNU institutes and programmes located elsewhere. The Executive Officer will have as the primary focus of his/her responsibilities assisting the Rector and other senior staff in the executive management and coordination of the UNU network of institutes and programmes. This will involve, in particular, the implementation of decisions of the UNU Council, the Management Group and the Conference of Directors of UNU institutes and programmes (CONDIR). The Executive Officer assists the Rector in the day-to-day management of University affairs and serves as the

focal point for the development and issuance of policy guidelines within the UNU system. (S)he undertakes and oversees strategic, medium- and long-term planning in conjunction with the Rector and senior management. The incumbent coordinates the process of monitoring and evaluating UNU activities, including the preparation of reports, peer evaluations and other quality control mechanisms. The Executive Officer also coordinates the University’s institutional development initiatives and supports the overall institutional relations and programme development of the UNU system. (S)he provides oversight, in conjunction with the University’s legal adviser of all legal aspects of the University’s work involving host countries, academic institutions, NGOs and other civil society organizations. The Executive Officer, working with administrative and financial colleagues, ensures that UNU complies with its regulatory framework, some of which is drawn from the United Nations. Other line-supervision responsibilities include those for the University Headquarters ICT unit and communications. Required Qualifications and Experience: The position requires:          

An advanced university degree in business administration, law, economics or a relevant field; A minimum of 10 years management experience (some of which at a senior level) in a research and/or academic teaching institution or an international organization; Experience in policy development and coordination and in financial and programme planning; Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing academic projects or initiatives; Knowledge of the United Nations system and the think-tank world would be desirable; Demonstrable familiarity with leading higher education institutions would be advantageous; Knowledge of and experience in building and sustaining international networ
