The Way Forward on Clean Air Earlier this year, an event at the World Resources Institute in Washington, D.C., looked back upon 40 years of significant accomplishment under the Clean Air Act – and looked ahead at what can be done to continue the nation’s progress toward a cleaner, healthier environment. The event featured two former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrators: William Ruckelshaus, the first to hold the post under President Nixon; and William Reilly, who served under President George H.W. Bush. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) moderated the discussion. Health experts provided their perspectives, as did

plant emissions and is supporting new clean air rules so that other companies take similar action.

Common themes emerged. First, speaker after speaker broadly agreed that the Clean Air Act should be celebrated as a milestone of our nation’s progress in protecting human health and the environment. Yet this landmark law has also shown that steps to improve air quality can foster innovation and job creation.

Third, constructive bipartisan dialogue is important to successfully address environmental problems. Hopefully, the roundtable provided a model of the type of dialogue needed across the country to meet the clean air challenges of the future. Extraordinary progress has been made, but there is much more to do. PSEG stands ready to do its part.
