Black History Month By: Maziyah Harris r. Martin Luther King Jr., D Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner, Sojourner Truth, Ruby Bridges, and Little Rock Nine. These individuals stand alongside many other contributors, leaders, activists, and abolitionists who may not be included in every history book, but I and so many others are greatly appreciative for their assiduous & tireless work. Their contributions, diligence, dedication, and drive while fighting for equality for all is extremely important to recognize

and remember. There has been non-stop work done through protests, sit-ins, boycotts, etc. Even when there were situations where it felt that things would not get better and people felt that maybe what they were doing was pointless, worthless, or even valueless, these powerful leaders of change always got up and tried again. They bounced back stronger and even more prepared and ready than before. Black History Month is exactly that. Identifying and highlighting those who made a significant change to our world and have shaped our society. Those activists, leaders, and abolitionists are the main reasons I have multicultural friends and teachers, why I’m able to vote when I’m 18, or the reason I don’t have to sit in the back of the city bus. I can sit anywhere I want in a restaurants, movie theatres etc! How grateful I am will never be enough!

These people have gotten brutally injured, thrown in jail, death threats, and even death itself. They did it not only for themselves and their families, but for you and I too! Although racism isn’t completely solved and is still a very big issue in our society today, it’s gotten a bit better than it was in the 1900’s and before. (In my opinion ) Black History Month is a time to recognize all who have lived and died as heroes, legends, influential, eminent, and prestigious individuals. There is a famous quote that really brings it all together. “I have decided to stick with love, hate is too great a burden to bear”. -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Choose love. It takes you farther. Rest In Peace to all of those who have died in the process of making our world a better place.

15 Years Ago This Month… By Jesse Johannsen

15 years ago on February 1st, 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated hundreds of thousands of feet in the air. To remember the five astronauts who lost their lives 15 years ago, I will explain what went wrong on that very sad and fateful day back in February, 2003. Space Shuttle Columbia successfully launched from Cape Canaveral on January 16th, 2003 after two years of delays. Eighty seconds into the launch, a peace of foam

insulation from the large orange external fuel tank fell off and hit the shuttles left wing- opening holes to the internals of the wing. NASA saw this at launch but could not do anything about it. On February 1st, Columbia was making its usual landing approach when Mission Control found weird readings in some of the left wing sensors. The temperature and tire pressure sensors in the left wing where lost and while Rick Husband, commander, was communicating with Mission Control, Space Shuttle Columbia exploded. After the disaster, Nasa concluded that the holes in the left wing caused atmospheric gases to bleed into the wing during re entry. This caused the sensors to get destroyed just like the Shuttle would minutes later.

Advice Column By Leroy Nance

Dear Leroy,  What should I do when things get  stressful? How does someone stay  positive?   From,  Stressed Out and Curious     Dear Stressed Out and Curious,   W hen Life gives ya lemons, make  yourself some lemonade. Of course,  we all know this saying is  metaphorical, but what if we took  this literally? It’s wonderful. Take  some lemons, make life better. In  the long run, most of the things  you’re worried about don’t matter.  Live for the things that make you  happy. If something doesn’t make  you happy that you have to do, like  school, find something about it that  does.

FLW SPELLING BEE

  Page 3

Sure, while it’s not that simple  sometimes, go through the bushel  of thorns, you may find some gold  you never would’ve thought could  be there. Don’t take the easy way  out.  No one ever said life was  gonna be easy, but you, yes, YOU,  can make it better by thinking,  going outside, and just basking in  the wonders that life holds. Take  the metaphorical lemons, and  make metaphorical lemonade.   Because it may very well be the  best thing to ever happen to you.   From,  Leroy

Rane Foster Spelling bees have been held since the 1800’s, and can be located all around the world. In 1925 they were recognized throughout America with the Scripps National Spelling Bee. But recently FLW held its own! Sixth through eighth graders of our school were given the option to participate against fellow students. Although there wasn’t an audience that consisted of other kids,

I heard the spelling match was exciting. About thirty kids faced off in the LMC. Two of our administrators read of the words. As you all know, with spelling bees there must be a winner, so we’d like to announce seventh grade Ava Bertling. Congratulations on your first place victory! Also, a shout out to second place Sean Rivera, and third place Emma Pawlak. Ava will be moving on to the next level, held at West Allis Central High School. Hopefully she can carry our school farther threw all the matches. Good luck to future contestants of next year.
