The Yurkharovskoye Field

Project Context & Description:

The Yurkharovskoye oil and gas condensate field is the main producing asset of NOVATEK, Russia’s second largest gas producer after Gazprom. The field has 402.1 billion m³ of gas reserves and was discovered in 1970 within the polar circle on the southeast shore of the Tazov peninsula. The current drilling contractors working on the project are specialized in ERD wells and are planning on drilling five Extended Reach Drilling (ERD) wells: “Investgeoservice” CSC • Wells No. 371 and 373 completed with record results achieved for drilling at mainland Russia Total Measured Depth (TMD - 8497 м, Extension - 7059 м.) • Well No. 372 • Well No. 358 Integra • Well No. 374

2 Challenge:

Drilling program challenges include the severe Environment of Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District (Yamal) including:

• cold weather, down to -60ºC in winter • permafrost zone • complicated geological structure multilayers and unstable formations

Other drilling challenges include:

• extended-reach wells with ERD coefficients (extension/Total Vertical Depth (TVD)) greater than 2.5 • high torque at top drive • hydraulic losses in the 4” section due to tool joint ID

Results & Benefits:

With three wells successfully drilled and a forth well started, our solution has proven its added value for drilling complex wells: The VAM® ExpressTM connection provided torsional strength sufficient to perform all drilling operations with safety coefficients greater than specified value. Hardbanding on the OD faced significant wear. Reapplication was required. As a result the Hardbanding applied saved the tool joint OD from excessive wear preventing the reduction of the connection’s torsional strength. The VAM® ExpressTM connection showed good durability with a 0% joint rejection rate during operations.
