OVERVIEW Indonesia is one of the zoonoses hotspot in the world that has a high risk of transmission of emerging infectious diseases, re-emerging infectious diseases, and potential pandemic diseases. Zoonotic diseases influence the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems, which reviewed from various perspectives, especially the economy of a country, thus requiring cross-sectoral synergistic efforts in preventing and overcoming it. One of the efforts in addressing the zoonoses problem is to increase countries' capacity to detect, prevent and respond to zoonoses. Human life sectors should implement One Health approach which focuses on collaboration multi-sectoral to control zoonoses problem. Not only in research, but also in an academic course and community. Students should understand about what is One Health approach and how to implement it into the real situation to tackle zoonoses. Researchers should do research to find potential the diseases of tomorrow and a vaccine to protect human and animal. Last, we should involve the community to implement the good practice of One Health approach in their community.

Indonesia One Health University Network (INDOHUN), a university platform of One Health approach in Indonesia, contributes in enhancing the One Health workforce capacity in teaching, research and community outreach. Through The One Health Teaching, Research, and Community Outreach Training, INDOHUN wants to improve the capacity of innovative teaching, research, and community outreach. This activity has three sub-activities and will hold in three parallel classes. The first sub-activity is One Health Teaching Training for lecturers. The second sub-activity is One Health Research Training for lecturers, faculty academic staff, students (undergraduate and postgraduate), and researchers. The third sub-activity is One Health Community Outreach Training for lecturers, faculty academic staff, and students (undergraduate and postgraduate).

The Research Proposal Topics Re-emerging Infectious & Zoonotic Diseases

Re-emerging infectious diseases are a disease that once was major health problems globally or in a particularly country, and then declined dramatically, but are again becoming health problems for a significant proportion of the population. The reemergence of the disease in the human population indicates that there are changes in the ecological balance. Controlling the re-emerging disease requires a focused and collaborative effort across multiple disciplines – a One Health approach. Example: cryptosporidiosis, diphtheria, malaria, meningitis, pertussis, rabies, rubella, schistosomiasis, tuberculosis, and yellow fever

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) range from novel zoonotic infections to infective organisms with new patterns of antimicrobial resistance. Infections can travel both ways at the interface between animals and people; animal health has an intrinsic link to human health. The environment also contributes in the connection between human and animals, either it influences the habitat of animal or human population. Surveillance as a tool for monitoring the spreading of disease needs to improve. It needs to bring the human, animal, and environmental sectors to improve the ability to combat EID threats.

Example: classic cholera in South America and Africa; cholera due to Vibrio cholera O139; Rift Valley fever; hantavirus pulmonary syndrome; Lyme disease; hemolytic uremic syndrome

Emerging Infectious & Zoonotic Diseases

The Research Proposal Topics Environmental Health & Ecology

One Health approach is the notion of combining human, animal, and environmental components to address global health challenges that have an ecological interconnectedness. Ecology is further significant forces that underpin EID dynamics and also plays a significant role in a human and animal relationship in the influence of ecological balance. Ecological research is needed to discover ecological risk factors that are also a critical importance in disease transmission. Example: the disease may occur among people living and working in small rural farming communities in tropical rainforests, savannah, mountains, and deserts that are near wild animals

Re-emerging diseases are not simply about pathogen moving from human to animal or vice versa occurring the disease. It is a complex relation between human, animal, and environment with systems around. The One Health approach is emphasizing inter-disciplinary co-operation as necessary for effective EID control and prevention. Therefore, the involvement of policy makers become important to support health system of a country and the coordination between sectors and disciplines. Scientific research is needed to support policy development in the implementation of one health and the achievement of global health security goals. Health policy advocacy which related to human and animal health interaction. Example: health regulation of rabies control

One Health & Policy Advocacy

The Research Proposal Topics Climate Change & Population Health

Climate change is recognized as part of the larger syndrome of human-included global environmental changes and is difficult to disentangle their relationship from some One Health issues, such as EIDs and food security. The pathways by which climate change can affect host-pathogen-vector interactions and will alter the distribution and incidence of a wide range of disease. The One Health movement has progressed from a focus on emerging infectious diseases to a broader set of challenges that include food security and food safety. These interact with climate change that linked to all human activity. Climate change acts as a threat multiplier that interacts both directly and indirectly with variables such as disease, food production, food security, food safety, and poverty. Thus One Health approach could help society to rethink how to plan, move, produce, and consume food.

The impact of climate change and population health to human health. Example: people compete for food because of the increasing number of population

The Community Outreach Proposal Topics

Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases cause by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi; the diseases can be spread, directly or indirectly, from one person to another. Zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases of animals that can cause disease when transmitted to humans (source: WHO). Including emerging diseases, re-emerging disease, and zoonotic diseases.

Environmental risk factors, such as air, water and soil pollution, chemical exposures, climate change, and ultraviolet radiation, contribute to more than 100 diseases and injuries. Focusing on reducing environmental and social risk factors to prevent the global burden of disease (source: WHO).

Environmental Health

Including promoting safe household water storage, better hygiene measures.

Climate Change

The changing of global climate has the potential to affect human health in some ways, for instance by altering the geographic range and seasonality of certain infectious diseases, disturbing food-producing ecosystems, and increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, such as hurricanes (source: WHO). Including the higher temperature, rising sea level, changing rainfall, changes in nature.

The Community Outreach Proposal Topics

Natural Disaster

Natural disasters are catastrophic events with atmospheric, geologic, and hydrologic origins. Natural disasters can have rapid or slow onset, with serious health, social, and economic consequences (source: NCBI). Including Disasters include earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, tsunamis, floods, and drought.

Population health is the health outcomes of a group of individuals, including the distribution of such outcomes within the group. These groups are often geographic populations such as nations or communities. The health outcomes of such groups are of relevance to policymakers in both the public and private sectors (source: improving population health).

Population Health

Including: controlling population using urban design approach, clean air & water approach, education approach, culture approach.

Health Behavior

The cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health. Health Literacy means more than being able to read pamphlets and successfully make appointments (source: WHO). Including PHBS, surrounding free of collected water, covered water storage containers, manage the drainage systems.
