2018-2019 Kindergarten Roundup

Parent Informational Meeting Thursday, April 12, 2018 ~ 6:00—7:00 pm Monday, June 18, 2018 ~ 6:00—7:00 pm

Spring is almost here, and we are preparing for our next class of kindergarten students! The Kindergarten Roundup Parent Informational Meetings are scheduled for Thursday, April 12, and Monday, June 18, from 6:00-7:00 pm at the Early Childhood Center (ECC) in the New Gym. The meeting is designed for parents/ guardians only. Therefore, your child need not attend. At this meeting you will receive information about our full day kindergarten program, learn about the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment process, transportation procedures, and receive your registration packet. You will also schedule a Kindergarten Readiness Assessment appointment for your child.

Children born on or before September 1, 2013 may enroll for kindergarten. Details of age requirements will be available at the Parent Informational Meeting.

What to expect at the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment appointment: During these individual appointments, a kindergarten teacher will complete a readiness assessment with your child. This assessment will provide valuable information as we plan for your child’s educational needs for the fall. After your child completes the 15-minute assessment, the teacher will review the information with you and possibly make suggestions for activities that you may want to do with your child over the summer. At this Readiness Assessment appointment, please plan on submitting all registration paperwork received at the Kindergarten Roundup Parent Meeting. The entire process requires approximately 20-30 minutes of time. Parents should bring the following documentation to the Readiness Assessment appointment: · Driver’s License · Two Proofs of Residency (these are in addition to the driver’s license) · Child’s Birth Certificate · Record of Immunizations · Social Security Number of Child (optional) We are looking forward to welcoming you into the Flushing Community Schools family! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Early Childhood Center at 810-591-2326.

The Early Childhood Center is located at 409 Chamberlain. Both the North doors and South doors of the ECC will be available for use on April 12 and June 18.

Letter from Tim Stein to Governor Snyder Michigan - It’s Time to Invest in Education

Dear Governor Snyder: I am encouraged by your budget proposal to increase the minimum foundation allowance $240 to $7,871 per pupil and understand you are proposing the highest increase in the foundation allowance in the last 15 years. I am hopeful you have had the time to review the School Finance Research Collaborative study (www. fundmischools.org). If so, you are surely aware this comprehensive study, completed by the nation’s two leading school funding research firms, outlines a pathway to much needed reforms in school funding. Please consider this letter as constructive; my sole purpose is to see our state’s educational system prosper. The 358-page School Finance Reform Collaborative study makes a strong case for the funding reform necessary for our educational system to meet the needs of our students and to make the Michigan state standards attainable by our students. The study suggests that the true cost of resources necessary for the state to accomplish its educational objective is $9,590 per pupil for general education students and $14,155 per pupil for preschool age students, with additional adjustments to the base funding needed for special education and students who are English Language Learners. Also, the study suggests additional funding for transportation, food service, and capital costs for facilities. Flushing Community Schools is a minimum foundation district that receives $7,631 per pupil. That difference of over $1,900 per pupil from what the study suggests for general education students results in a funding shortfall of nearly $8 million for our district. A recent Bridge Magazine article (“Michigan’s K-12 Performance Dropping at an Alarming Rate,” January

23, 2017) talked about concerns with the performance of Michigan K-12 students in comparison to other states. It also pointed out the fact between 2004-2015 Michigan’s K-12 investment in education dropped 7 percent, while nationally it rose 3.6 percent. Based on that disparity in funding, is there truly any question in your mind why we are not getting the student achievement we expect?

Community News Cindy Gansen ~ Many Thanks for Her Board of Education Years of Service

After calling Flushing home for so many years, Cindy Gansen and her husband, Don, are moving out of our community to Fenton. As a result of this move, Cindy must resign as a member of the Flushing Board of Education. Her dedication, knowledge and expertise will be greatly missed. Cindy’s long term relationship with Flushing Schools began as a third grade student. She is a Flushing High School alumni and all five of her children graduated from Flushing High School. She was an active parent all throughout her children’s education. Her involvement and leadership in the development of the FHS Moms Who Care is still impacting students today. Because of her deep commitment to students, Cindy was first asked to run for the Flushing Board of Education in 1999. She has served on the board since then with only a periodic year off between various elections. Over the years, she has served as Trustee, Treasurer, and Board President. In addition to being a valued member of the Flushing Schools Board of Education, Cindy has also served on the

Genesee Intermediate School District Board of Education since 2009. She has served as the GISD Board of Education Treasurer, Trustee, and is the current President. She is also currently serving her third 3 year term on the Michigan Association of School Boards. This organization helps to train local school board members throughout the state. Cindy’s passion for wanting to help local board members serve to the best of their ability is evident in the work she does for this organization.

The Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) is Michigan’s summative assessment designed to measure how well students are mastering state standards. This will be the fourth year that the M-STEP test has been administered to our students. The M-STEP test is an important assessment that provides achievement data to our students, parents, and school district. The M-STEP test is administered to students in 3rd through 11th grade. English Language Arts and Mathematics will be assessed in grades 3 – 8, Science in grades 5, 8 & 11, and Social Studies in grades 5, 8 & 11. M-STEP also encompasses the PreSAT (PSAT) for grades 9 & 10, along with the SAT and WorkKeys for students in 11th grade. The M-STEP assessments are designed to be delivered online. Students will be using desktops and Chromebook computers to complete their tests. To accommodate online testing, grade levels will test during designated time periods that are detailed in the graph located to the right. cal. Please plan on having your child to school every day during their scheduled M-STEP testing time. As we get closer to the M-STEP, your child’s teacher and/or principal will be communicating a more specific testing schedule.

In addition to the M-STEP test, Kindergarten – 2nd grade students will be taking early literature and math benchmark assessments this spring. The testing window will run from April 9 – May 25, 2018. The K-2 Early Literacy and Mathematics Benchmark Assessments are online and are fully aligned to Michigan's academic standards. They are used as one measure of student growth. This assessment is similar to the one that the kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students completed in October of this school year. Each subject area test has two parts and each part takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes to complete. The English Language Arts portion will assess reading, writing, and language skills. The Math portion will assess operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base 10, measurement and data, and geometry.

You can learn more about how the Parent Dashboard was developed and plans for future updates at MDE’s Parent Dashboard Resource Page: www. michigan.gov/MDEmde-ParentDashboard. Early Childhood Center As we begin the second half of the school year, we have so much to celebrate! We are proud of the progress our students are making, not only in their academics, but also in their understanding of the importance of community. They continually amaze us with their kindness, compassion, and also with their independence as they navigate through the day. Our current kindergarten students are frequently on the receiving end of older students coming to share in learning and play time. This year, our students have reached out to the ECC’s preschool students and have spent time as mentors to them. Both experiences are important to developing the understanding that we are all part of one big Raider family.

Raider Day at the ECC was held in February. The purpose of this special day was for students and staff to focus on behavior expectations. It was an opportunity to see Jr. Raider behavior modeled in the cafeteria, the hallways, and at the lockers.

A day at preschool is filled with lots of learning, lots of fun, and lots of friends!

Perfect Attendance

For perfect attendance, students were present every day and every period for the entire semester! Congratulations!!

Early Childhood Center On February 3, the ECC hosted the first Kindergarten Coffee Club (KCC). This was an opportunity for kindergarten parents to spend time with the ECC staff. Information was shared about the academic, social, and development expectations of kindergarten. Parents also shared their ideas and thoughts. There were hands-on activities and projects to do at home. The ECC team will be holding Kindergarten Coffee Club meetings at regular intervals throughout each year. Watch for information to come home. Our preschool families will be included in the spring KCC. March 2018

3rd graders at Seymour Elementary had a wonderful opportunity to visit Sloan Museum and learn about Native Americans. Students were able to see artifacts that the Annishnabeg Tribe would have used when they lived in Michigan. They learned about their shelter, how they hunted for food, and the different types of crops grown by them. The students especially enjoyed creating their own petroglyphs, just like the Annishnabeg made! Students also had the opportunity to learn about different landforms and create their own with modeling clay. They learned about mountains, rivers, hills, plateaus, lakes, valleys, and hills. Students got to take their creations home with them too! Both of the presentations aligned to the 3rd grade social studies curriculum, which made it even more engaging for the students. Thank you Sloan Museum! The students had a great time!

Regardless of the project, whether making sure our website is ADA compliant, helping facilitate state testing or putting the 3R’s together from top to bottom, she can be counted on to get the job done and most importantly, getting the job done right. In our recent bond campaign, communication of factual information and the details of the proposed projects was critical. Mary Ann was truly on top of making sure our FAQ webpage was updated daily to provide responses to questions and provide accurate, factual information.

Educator of the Year: Stacy Stead Stacy is currently a fourth grade teacher at Central Elementary and has taught in the district for over 23 years. She began as a student teacher in our district, then a substitute teacher, and then received her first assignment as a kindergarten teacher. She also taught second grade before moving to her current assignment Flushing Community Schools

in fourth grade. Stacy grew up in Houghton Lake and attended college at the University of Michigan – Flint. She is married to husband Chip, has two children – son, Danny, and daughter, Nicole. Central Principal Rob Steinhaus describes Stacy as a positive staff leader, who sets a positive tone for the entire building. She has high expectations for students, and creates a productive and comfortable learning environment in her classroom. Stacy goes above and beyond for her students, often spending her lunch time working with students who need academic, social, or behavioral support. She is a Student Council sponsor, helped create the Green Team recycling program at Central, a Positive Behavior Intervention Support Committee member, and frequently mentors new teachers in their first years of service. When Stacy’s students were asked to describe their teacher and what makes her special, we heard the following statements universally, “Always has a smile and makes us feel happy!”, “Always willing to help us when we have a problem,” “I can trust her,” and “She is patient and always willing to help you understand,” and “She cares about us!” For all of these reasons and more, Stacy Stead has been selected as the 2018 Flushing Community Schools Educator of the Year. School Calendar & Snow Days As you are aware, with the severe winter weather that we have experienced this year, school has been cancelled six (6) days (as of February 12, 2018) due to dangerous road conditions or severe cold temperatures. The State School Aid Act requires that districts provide 180 days of school each year. A district must also provide a minimum of 1098 hours of instruction. The 2017-2018 school calendar meets these requirements. Section 101(4) of the State School Aid Act allows the first six (6) days cancelled for conditions not within the control of the school district, to be counted toward days and hours of instruction. With the approval of the Michigan Department of Education Superintendent of Public Instruction, the state has the ability to grant up to three additional days (a total of nine (9) days) to a district due to unusual or extenuating circumstances not within the control of school authorities. There is not a guarantee that these 3 additional days will automatically be granted, but it can reasonably assumed that they would be, should it become necessary. I share this information with you at this point so that you are aware of where the district stands regarding having to make up any lost time. At this point, we do not need to make up any instructional days, but should that change, the plan to make up lost instructional days will be conveyed to you as soon as possible. We appreciate your understanding and support as we make decisions in the best interest of student and staff safety. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s principal or Matt Shanafelt at 591-1184. 12
