SWRCB hearing officers for California WaterFix issue a new ruling letter The State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) hearing officers for California WaterFix issued a new ruling letter November 20 that addresses a request to modify the direction regarding objections, an emergency extension request by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), et al., the Department of the Interior’s (DOI) objection to NRDC’s Supplemental Notice of Intent to Appear (Supplemental NOI), an addition to the hearing team, and an amendment to the list of staff exhibits.

Independent panel’s long-term operations biological opinions biennial science review is December 4–7 An independent review panel, convened by the Delta Stewardship Council, will conduct the seventh longterm operations biological opinions biennial science review December 4–7. Day 1 of the meeting will be a field trip along the Stanislaus River for the independent review panel. Limited members of the public may attend. Registration is required for the field trip. PPIC publishes A New Approach to Accounting for Environmental Water The Public Policy Institute (PPIC) of California Water Policy Center has published A New Approach to Accounting for Environmental Water — Insights from the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. The report illustrates the approach of consistently tracking water that exceeds water demands and diversion capacity (“uncaptured water”), which can provide significant benefits for water users and ecosystems, using the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta as a test case.

Dr. James E. Cloern is a recipient of the Odom Award Dr. James E. Cloern, physical scientist, U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, is a recipient of the Odum Award, which is one of the 2017 Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation Scientific Awards. The Odom Award honors an individual whose record of sustained accomplishments has made important contributions to the understanding of estuaries and coastal ecosystems. Dr. Cloern is an exceptionally well-rounded scientist and is known for his tenacious stewardship of a long-term monitoring program in San Francisco Bay, a program he leveraged into ground-breaking research and synthesis with global datasets.
