Mary, humbly and respectfully, trusted the role God gave her: to become the mother of her Savior and ours. Christ Jesus, God ’s eternal Son, later humbly and respectfully kept walking in the way His Father planned in eternity for Him to save us all.

Welcoming Hymn In the cross of Christ I glory, tow’ring o’er the wrecks of time; All the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime. When the woes of life o’ertake me, hopes deceive, and fears annoy, Never shall the cross forsake me. Lo, it glows with peace and joy. When the sun of bliss is beaming light and love upon my way, From the cross the radiance streaming adds more luster to the day. Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, by the cross are sanctified; Peace is there that knows no measure, joys that through all time abide. L ea d er : I n t h e n ame o f t h e F a t he r, an d o f t h e S o n a n d o f t h e H o l y Spirit. P e o p l e : Amen. L ea d er : God’s will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil. P e o p l e : God’s will is done when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and in the faith until we die.

...the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life. John 3

L ea d er : Let us confess to God that we have a sinful will that goes against His will. P e o p l e : Lord God, we have sinned against You and against others with our thoughts, words and our actions. L ea d er : Though You have called us to be Your people, we have lived as if we do not need Your will done in our lives. P e o p l e : In Your great mercy, forgive us our sins for Jesus’ sake. Send us Your Holy Spirit to enable us to live as Your holy people. L ea d er : Based on the merits of Christ, crucified and risen, I am privileged to tell you God’s good news: you are forgiven all your sins, in the name of the living God. Be at peace in Him. We pray: Sa v i o r Jesus, You came humble and poor, make us see Your great salvation, move us to be thankful for Your rich promises. Strengthen and keep us with Your Word; P e o p l e : You defeated sin and death in our place; present us in Your glory to the Father, cleansed and pure. Do for us as You have promised in Your unchanging Word. Amen

God’s Word for All (from the 4 Gospels) While Jesus was still speaking, suddenly Judas (one of the Twelve) arrived. With him was a large crowd with lanterns, torches, swords, and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. Judas was leading them. Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who are you looking for?” “Jesus the Nazarene,” they re-

plied. “I am He,” Jesus told them. Judas, the betrayer, was standing with them. When Jesus told them, “I am he,” they backed away and fell to the ground. Then Jesus asked them again, “Who are you looking for?” “Jesus the Nazarene,” they said. “I told you that I am He,” Jesus replied. “So if you are looking for me, let these men go.” This was to fulfill the statement he had spoken: “I did not lose any of those You have given Me.” Now the betrayer had given them a sign: “The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him.” Immediately he went to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” Then they advanced, took hold of Jesus, and arrested him. When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, “Lord, should we strike with a sword?” Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest ’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. But Jesus responded, “Stop! No more of this! Put your sword back into its place, because all who take the sword will die by the sword. Do you not realize that I could call on my Father, and at once he would provide me with more than twelve legions of angels? But then how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen this way?” Then he touched the servant’s ear and healed him. At that same time Jesus said to the crowd, “Have you come out to arrest me with swords and clubs as if I were a robber? Day after day I was sitting in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. But all this has happened so that the writings of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. The company of soldiers, their commander, and the Jewish guards arrested Jesus and bound him. First they led him to Annas, because he was fatherin-law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year. Now it was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews, “It is better that one man die for the people.”

version 1

1. What Child is this who, laid to rest On Mary's lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste, to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary. 2. Why lies He in such mean estate, Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christians, fear, for sinners here The silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, The cross be borne for me, for you. Hail, hail the Word made flesh, The Babe, the Son of Mary.

...the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life. John 3

Frances Ridley Havergal Frances Ridley Havergal, the daughter of Pastor and Mrs Havergal, was born at Astley, Worcestershire, England December 14, in the year of our Lord 1836. Jesus had blessed Frances with Christian parents. They loved learning about everything God had done for them in Jesus Christ. Frances was thankful that they nurtured her faith when she was younger. When she was confirmed she wrote, “earth and heaven seemed brighter from that moment on." Both of her parents loved reading and writing and playing and singing music. They saw and nurtured the unusually blessed gifts in their little girl. She wanted to get to know God ’s word better, so she asked to learn Hebrew, the language God used in the Old Testament. She also learned the Greek language God used in the New Testament. Frances had begun reading and memorizing the Bible at the age of four. She eventually memorized The Psalms, Isaiah and most of the New Testament as well. At age seven she wrote her first poetry. Frances was in demand as a concert soloist. She sometimes sang with the Philharmonic Orchestra. But she is known as probably the most gifted and popular female hymn writer that England has been blessed to have in the last century. With all her education, however, Frances Havergal maintained a simple and firm faith A CKNOWLEDGEMENTS Passion History Reading, Evangelical Heritage Version (EHV) © 2016 The Wartburg Project.| Se rvi c e or d er: © 2018 J. and confidence in the Lord Jesus and His Word. She never wrote a line of poetry without praying over it. There are more of her hymns in church hymnals than any other woman. About 75 of them are still in common use! When she turned 36, she was in the company of a small group of people, some of whom were not Christians, and others lukewarm and not really serious about Jesus. She spent a week gently talking with them and praying for them. By the end of that week, the Holy Spirit had worked faith in them to join her in following Jesus Christ. The last night, after the group went to bed, she was too excited to sleep. So Frances stayed up and wrote the hymn, "Take My Life and Let It Be." Her devotion to Jesus Christ was seen in many areas of her life. She donated her collection of jewelry to her church to raise money for mission endeavors (hence the lyric “take my silver and my gold; not a mite will I withhold. Very few poets have set apart their God-given gifts of head and heart and pen more fully to Christ than she did. Although the Lord Jesus called her home to heaven at the young age of forty-three, she left behind wonderful gifts for people found in her poems of Christian faith and love and service. At Caswall Bay, Swansea, England on June 3, 1879, she was escorted to her Savior’s heavenly home. From that time till now, God has increased her popularity and her influence as an author and hymn-writer and poet.
