DATA PROTECTON

TIP SHEET

In today’s IT world, data protection is a must-have feature. A data protection plan is essential for any organization today.

What are the best practices for you to consider? 1

Establish Your Requirements.

It’s important to understand what your business and applications need in terms of availbility. Your backup and disaster recovery requirements will be based on two metrics: RPO (Recovery Point Objective) which is how old the recovered data can be and RTO (Recovery Time Objective) how long it is acceptable to get back to normal operations.

31% of all PC users have lost their files due to events beyond their control

2

Evaluate Recovery Strategies.

There are many different ways to back up your data. · Data Replication (local and remote): Can be synchronous (guarantees both primary and secondary data are kept identical) or asynchronous (remote copy could be seconds to minutes out of date, depending on the volume) · Application Replication: Data can be replicated at the application layer through database log shipping or creating mirrors. This may require more intensive recovery efforts as each application needs manual recovery steps. · Hypervisor Backup: Systems like VMware’s vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V provide traditional backup systems to copy data and integrate with storage arrays to offload the backup process. · Backup to Disk/Tape: Take a point-in-time copy of the data to another system. This can be time consuming. · Snapshots: Not strictly a backup, snapshots can be effective in recovering from minor issues like deleted files or corrupted data. 60% of companies that lose their data will shut down within 6 months of losing it

3

Implementation.

Data protection needs to be monitored, tested, and reported on. Always ensure processes are working and put rules in place that define application recovery order. Make sure you are tracking these backups, too.

4 Review.

The IT world is ever changing and is always introducing technology. Requirements change and applications grow, so make sure you re-evaluate your strategies every year.
