Title: “But Thou, O Man of God” 1 Timothy 6:11–16 “But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; 14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: 15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.” INTRODUCTION:

The phrase, “But thou” indicates a contrast between Timothy and the false teachers. They were men of the world, but he was a man of God. There should be a very clear distinction between the person who is save and those who are not. “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” (Matthew 5:14) “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) God gives us three admonitions that, if followed, would assure us success in maintaining our testimony as people of God:

1.

1 Timothy 6:11 a DEFINITION: “flee”—to separate ourselves from that which is contrary to God

“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?…” (2 Corinthians 6:14–18) “…from such withdraw thyself.” (1 Timothy 6:5)

2.

1 Timothy 6:11 b DEFINITION: “follow”—to pursue, to run after

“As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. 2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?” (Psalm 42:1–2) It is necessary that a Christian cultivates these graces of the Spirit in our lives:

3.

— Personal Integrity

— Practical Holiness

— Confident Obedience

— Sacrifices for the sake of others

— Endurance; Courage, not Complacency

— Power under control of God’s Spirit

(v. 12–16)

1 Timothy 6:12 DEFINITION: “fight”—straining and giving our best to win the prize or win

the battle

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:” (2 Timothy 4:7) “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” (Jude 1:3) 1 Timothy 6:13–14 We have the testimony of Jesus before Pilate (see John 19:10–11). We can also have full assurance that God is with us and that we need not fear to take a stand for Christ. 1 Timothy 6:15–16 QUESTION: Are you saved and enlisted in the Lord’s army? Can you say, as David cried out when Goliath defied the true and living God, “Is there not a cause?”
